Safety and immunogenicity of live-attenuated measles-mumps-rubella vaccination after pediatric heart transplantation.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, global outbreaks of measles and mumps have re-emerged as herd immunity declines. Pediatric heart transplant recipients are at increased risk for severe vaccine-preventable infections, yet live vaccines have historically been avoided due to safety concerns. Data on post-transplant measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination remain limited. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective single-center cohort study of pediatric heart transplant recipients who received live-attenuated MMR vaccination between January 2022 and January 2026 under a structured post-transplant vaccinati

Pediatric Measles Resurgence: Implications for Acute and Critical Care Nursing Practice.

BACKGROUND: The United States declared endemic measles eliminated in 2000. However, outbreaks continued, with resurgences in 2019 and 2025. In 2025, more than 2200 cases across 48 outbreaks, the most since 1992, were reported. In the first half of 2026, 2073 cases were reported. Declining measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination rates have increased susceptibility among children. Acute and critical care nurses are central to early recognition and management of measles for optimal outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To summarize current evidence on measles epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation,

Mumps Vaccination Policies and Epidemiological Consequences: A Comparative Review of the United States and Japan.

Mumps remains a public health challenge worldwide despite being a vaccine-preventable disease. This review outlines the historical development and contrasting mumps vaccination policies in the United States and Japan and their epidemiological consequences. In the United States, where the two-dose measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is routinely administered, the incidence of mumps has markedly decreased. Recently, however, sporadic outbreaks have emerged, driven by breakthrough infections among vaccinated individuals. These resurgences are driven largely by waning immunity, coupled with

Recurrent Mumps in a Fully Vaccinated Young Adult With a Prior Breakthrough Infection: A Case Report.

Mumps is a vaccine-preventable viral disease that typically presents with parotid gland swelling and constitutional symptoms. Although widespread immunization has substantially reduced disease incidence, outbreaks continue to occur among vaccinated populations, raising concerns regarding waning immunity and vaccine failure. Recurrent mumps following both prior natural infection and complete vaccination is uncommon and remains infrequently reported. We describe a 21-year-old woman who presented with a four-day history of fever, malaise, myalgia, and progressive painful swelling of the left paro

Coverage and missed opportunities for routine vaccination in adult travellers: a single-centre observational study.

BACKGROUND: Reducing missed opportunities for vaccination (MOV) - healthcare encounters in which recommended vaccinations are not given - is a WHO priority. In high-income countries like Australia, adult coverage for routine vaccines remains suboptimal. Specialist travel clinics frequently see medically complex travellers at increased risk of diseases like influenza, pneumococcal disease and shingles, yet may be underutilised for routine vaccination. This study aimed to assess routine vaccine coverage, on-site vaccination and MOV among adult travellers. METHODOLOGY: Single-centre retrospectiv

Measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella seroprevalence in health care workers: A cross-sectional study from Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the National Centre for Infectious Diseases, Singapore.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) and varicella seroprevalence and factors associated with seropositivity among our institutions' health care workers (HCWs). METHODS: This cross-sectional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) seroprevalence study of HCWs' residual sera from 2020 assessed factors associated with seropositivity using logistic regression and tested performance characteristics of an "immunity" criterion (composite of past vaccination and serology results) against seropositivity. Measles non-seropositive sera were re-tested with plaque neutralization reduct

The impact of social vulnerability on primary vaccine coverage in children with sickle cell disease.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines the relationship between social vulnerability and up-to-date (UTD) primary vaccine coverage among children with sickle cell disease (SCD). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included children with SCD born in Georgia between 2008 and 2019, identified through the state newborn screening program. Immunization records were obtained from the state registry, and birth addresses were matched to census tract level Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) scores. Children were considered UTD if they completed the recommended vaccine doses by 24 months. Multivariable lo

Alternative Childhood Vaccination Schedules in Israel: A Mixed-Methods Study on Prevalence, Patterns, and Public Health Implications.

Background/Objectives: Vaccination programs are highly effective public health interventions, yet parental hesitancy toward combination vaccines has led to growing demand for alternative vaccination schedules, defined in this study as parental requests to split or replace recommended combination vaccines with single-antigen vaccines for non-clinical reasons. While parental attitudes have been widely studied, little empirical evidence exists on the real-world use of single-antigen vaccines and their public health implications in countries with otherwise high coverage. This study examined the pr

Impact of CD19 CAR T-Cell Therapy on Pathogen-Specific Antibody Titers in Lymphoma Patients.

BACKGROUND: CD19-directed chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has exhibited efficacy in treating relapsed/refractory high-grade B-cell malignancies, but off-tumor effects cause prolonged hypogammaglobulinemia and B-cell aplasia. Limited data exist on pathogen-specific IgG titers post-CD19 CAR T-cell therapy. METHODS: We evaluated the impact of CD19 CAR T-cell therapy on vaccine-preventable infectious disease IgG titers in 20 patients to assess humoral immunity. IgG titers for measles virus (MeV), mumps virus (MuV), rubella virus (RuV), varicella zoster virus (VZV), pneumococcal cap

Immunogenicity and safety of an investigational varicella zoster vaccine in toddlers aged 12-15 months: results of a phase II, controlled, randomized trial.

Varicella is an acute, highly contagious infectious disease that primarily impacts young children with approximately 90% of cases occurring under the age of 15. Due to the high incidence of varicella infection, the potential for serious complications, and the significant economic and public health burden, vaccination of toddlers against varicella is included in routine vaccination programs in many countries. This study assessed the immunogenicity and safety of the investigational varicella vaccine (VNS) compared to a licensed, current standard-of-care vaccine. In this phase II, observer-blind,

Outbreaks due to measles, mumps, rubella and varicella in schools: a systematic review of the literature.

Several decades into routine pediatric vaccinations worldwide, many vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) remain endemic and cause outbreaks with serious morbidity and fatalities, even in countries with long-term implemented pediatric vaccination programs. Schools play a critical role during childhood and adolescence not only for educational purposes, but also for the socialization and overall well-being of children and adolescents. Participation in most school activities usually requires close proximity and interaction among students in indoor settings, which facilitates the transmission of sev

Addressing the crises of declining vaccination rates and measles resurgence by promoting health literacy.

Pediatric vaccination rates are declining in the United States, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting decreases in immunization coverage against measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTaP), polio, and varicella. The recent measles outbreaks have resulted in tragic outcomes, highlighting the urgent need for clinician concern and proactive measures to prevent illness, hospitalizations, missed school and caregiver workdays, and deaths. According to the World Health Organization, MMR vaccination rates below 95% compromise herd immunity,

Social Determinants of Childhood Vaccination Coverage in the United States Using National Immunization Survey Data From 2010 to 2023: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination in early childhood is essential to prevent serious infectious diseases and protect community health. In the United States, 7 vaccines (diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis; polio; measles, mumps, and rubella; Haemophilus influenzae type b; hepatitis B; varicella; and pneumococcal conjugate) are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for children aged 19-35 months, along with 3 others (hepatitis A, influenza, and rotavirus), which are recommended for full protection. Despite these guidelines, recent measles outbreaks in the United States ha
