Arterial stiffness is a prominent feature of vascular ageing and strongly predicts cardiovascular and total mortality. The β2-microglobulin, (β2M) a newly identified biomarker of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), is related to renal insufficiency, inflammatory and neoplastic diseases, but may also play a role in vascular dysfunction. However, the relationship between arterial stiffness and β2M has not been previously studied in patients with atherosclerosis. In the present study we examined a possible association between β2M and arterial stiffness in patients with PAD and in healthy subjects.

The nuclear hormone receptor PPARγ is activated by several agonists, including members of the thiazolidinedione group of insulin sensitizers. Pleiotropic beneficial effects of these agonists, independent of their blood glucose-lowering effects, have recently been demonstrated in the vasculature. PPARγ agonists have been shown to lower blood pressure in animals and humans, perhaps by suppressing the renin-angiotensin (Ang)-aldosterone system (RAAS), including the inhibition of Ang II type 1 receptor expression, Ang-II-mediated signaling pathways, and Ang-II-induced adrenal aldosterone synthesis

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify non-neoplastic pathologic changes in partial nephrectomy specimens of patients without a known history of medical comorbidities. Routine analysis of this tissue may allow the clinician to identify subclinical renal disease.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed our database of patients who underwent open partial nephrectomy for a small renal mass. Non-neoplastic tissue of partial nephrectomy specimens of patients without a known history of chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, or coronary artery disease was evaluated for glomerular, inte

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a debilitating disease with a high mortality rate. A hallmark of PAH is plexiform lesions (PLs), complex vascular formations originating from remodeled pulmonary arteries. The development and significance of these lesions have been debated and are not yet fully understood. Some features of PLs resemble neoplastic disorders, and there is a striking resemblance to glomeruloid-like lesions (GLLs) in glioblastomas. To further elucidate PLs, we used in situ methods, such as (fluorescent) IHC staining, three-dimensional reconstruction, and laser microdissecti

Glomerular diseases are a leading cause of chronic kidney disease in dogs but seem to be less common in cats. Glomerular diseases are diverse, and a renal biopsy is needed to determine the specific glomerular disease that is present in any animal. Familial glomerulopathies occur in many breeds of dogs. However, most dogs with glomerular disease have acquired glomerular injury that is either immune-complex mediated or due to systemic factors, both of which are believed to be the result of a disease process elsewhere in the body (i.e., neoplastic, infectious, and noninfectious inflammatory disor

Juxtaglomerular cell tumor (JGCT) generally affects adolescents and young adults. The patients experience symptoms related to hypertension and hypokalemia due to renin-secretion by the tumor. Grossly, the tumor is well circumscribed with fibrous capsule and the cut surface shows yellow or gray-tan color with frequent hemorrhage. Histologically, the tumor is composed of monotonous polygonal cells with entrapped normal tubules. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells exhibit a positive reactivity for renin, vimentin and CD34. Ultrastructurally, neoplastic cells contain rhomboid-shaped renin protogran

BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important regulators of gene expression, which have roles in renal development and disease. They exist in biological fluids including blood and urine and may have signalling roles and potential as disease biomarkers.
METHODS: We measured the levels of miRNAs in patients with different stages of chronic kidney failure including those receiving maintenance haemodialysis treatment.
RESULTS: In patients with severe chronic renal failure, circulating levels of total and specific miRNAs are reduced in comparison to patients with mild renal impairment or normal re

Neoplastic diseases can cause renal damage directly or indirectly. Also their treatment can provoke renal damage. The incidence and prevalence of paraneoplastic glomerulonephritis, especially associated with solid tumors, are a matter of debate and the causal link between cancer and glomerular diseases remains unclear. Paraneoplastic glomerulonephritis is a rare occurrence, with a slightly higher prevalence in the elderly. The most common cancer types associated with paraneoplastic glomerular disease are carcinoma of the lung and the gastrointestinal tract. Membranous nephropathy is the most f

Renal disease includes conditions affecting the glomeruli, tubules, interstitium, pelvis, and vasculature. Diseases of the kidney include glomerular diseases, diseases of the tubules and interstitium, diseases of renal pelvis, and developmental abnormalities. Renal tissue samples (n = 70) submitted to the Department of Veterinary Pathology of Konkuk University from 2003 to 2008 were included in this study. Tissue histopathology was performed using light microscopy with hematoxylin and eosin stains. Masson's trichrome, Congo Red, and Warthin starry silver staining were applied in several indivi

It is currently considered that idiopathic minimal change nephrotic syndrome is an immune-mediated glomerular disease. Its association with classical Hodgkin lymphoma minimal change nephrotic syndrome (cHL-MCNS) suggests a molecular link, which remains to be elucidated. We analyzed the expression of cmaf inducing protein (c-mip) in lymphomatous tissues and kidney biopsy samples of patients with cHL-MCNS (n = 8) and in lymphomatous tissues of patients with isolated cHL (n = 9). Because c-mip affects the regulatory loop involving Fyn, we investigated possible structural defects in this signaling

Intravascular large B cell lymphoma (IVLBCL) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma characterized by a disseminated intravascular proliferation of tumor cells in the lumina of small vessels. Although the kidney is one of the target organs of IVLBCL, it is extremely rare that lymphoma cells are localized only in the kidney. We report here a Japanese patient with kidney-limited IVLBCL. The patient presented with mild proteinuria and a good performance status without B symptoms at presentation. A renal biopsy showed large B cell neoplastic lymphocytes in the glomerular capillary lumina. Extensive

Gastro-entero-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (GEP NET) are a heterogeneous group of proliferative disorders whose management dramatically relies on tumour biology. For well-differentiated, low-proliferative index tumours, locoregional treatment and targeted radioisotopic therapies offer an attractive and seemingly efficient alternative to palliative surgical resections. Lack of well-designed, prospective, randomized multicentric studies hinders a balanced evaluation of available locoregional treatment methods: embolization, chemo-embolization, radio-embolization. According to available data

Paraneoplastic glomerulopathies are rare manifestations of neoplastic disease to be distinguished from iatrogenic renal damage. Solid tumors are preferentially associated with membranous nephropathy, whereas Hodgkin's lymphomas are associated with minimal change disease. The most common neoplasia associated with paraneoplastic glomerular disease are carcinomas of the lung and of the gastrointestinal tract. Nephrotic syndrome is the most frequent presentation of paraneoplastic glomerulopathy and the most critical glomerular disease regarding prognosis and patient care. Renal biopsy is recommend

BACKGROUND: A 59-year-old man who had undergone a left nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma was found to have metastatic disease during a restaging examination. The patient was started on treatment with interferon alpha2b plus bevacizumab, a humanized monoclonal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor antibody. After 9 months of this therapy, the patient developed proteinuria, which gradually increased to over 6 g/day.
INVESTIGATIONS: Physical examination, urine and blood analysis, biopsy of the right kidney, and histologic evaluation of the non-neoplastic portion of the left nephrectomy spec

The pathologic evaluation of tumor nephrectomy specimens focuses on the diagnosis, grading, and staging of the neoplasm. The presence of coincidental non-neoplastic diseases in these specimens may have significant implications for patient outcomes. The purpose of this study is to determine the spectrum of non-neoplastic disease processes that may be overlooked in tumor nephrectomies, and to ascertain the extent to which surgical pathologists are trained to recognize these lesions. We reviewed the hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides of 246 adult tumor nephrectomy specimens with an emphasis on

Pathologic changes in nonneoplastic renal parenchyma of nephrectomy specimens for renal tumors and the significance of these changes with regard to the outcome of contralateral kidney function have not been studied previously. We examined the nonneoplastic renal parenchymal changes in 110 consecutive tumor nephrectomy specimens, and we correlated our findings with patients' clinical information. The material was examined for the presence of any glomerular, tubulointerstitial, or vascular pathology. In our analysis, only about 10% of cases had unremarkable renal parenchyma and vasculature. Diffuse alveolar haemorrhage (DAH) denotes a diffuse intra-alveolar bleeding from small vessels as a result of severe damage of the alveolocapillary membrane of the lungs. These are comparatively rare, but than often life threatening events. The differential diagnosis is broad and comprises immunologic as well as toxic, infectious, hemodynamic, neoplastic and physical causes. DAH may be a manifestation of systemic diseases, as well as a result of an injury restricted to the lungs. The most frequent systemic diseases, that cause DAH are the so-called small vessel vasculititis-microscopic polyan

Diffusion-weighted (Dw) imaging has for a number of years been a diagnostic tool in the field of neuroradiology, yet only since the end of the 1990s, with the introduction of echoplanar imaging (EPI) and the use of sequences capable of performing diffusion studies during a single breath hold, has it found diagnostic applications at the level of the abdomen. The inherent sensitivity to motion and the magnetic susceptibility of Dw sequences nonetheless still create problems in the study of the abdomen due to artefacts caused by the heartbeat and intestinal peristalsis, as well as the presence of

PURPOSE: The role of angiopoietins (ANGs) in cancer progression is a new field of research. We examined the patterns of expression of ANGs in human renal cancer tissues (n =12) and investigated their roles in cancer progression in vitro and in vivo.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In normal renal tissue, the expression of ANG-1 was apparent in the glomerular capillaries and podocytes as well as in the endothelial cells of vessels, whereas we observed no expression of ANG-2. In contrast, in tumor tissue, dense, diffuse expression of ANG-1 was apparent in the fibroblasts, but not in the cancer cells. Inte
