The effects of scientific messages and narratives about vaccination.

A fundamental challenge complicates news decisions about covering vaccine side effects: although serious vaccine side effects are rare, less severe ones do occur occasionally. The study was designed to test whether a side effect message could induce vaccine hesitancy and whether that could be countered by pro-vaccine messages about vaccine safety. A large (N = 2,345), nationally representative experiment was conducted by randomly exposing participants to one of six videos about the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine edited from news programs produced during the 2019 measles outbreak in

Seroprevalence of Measles and Mumps Antibodies Among Individuals With Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: Although patients with cancer are at an increased risk of infection-related complications, few studies have characterized their vulnerability to measles and mumps. Given the recent outbreaks and increased community vaccine hesitancy, understanding measles and mumps immunity within this population is vital. OBJECTIVES: To identify a point prevalence estimate of protective measles and mumps antibodies among ambulatory patients with cancer. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cross-sectional study, residual clinical plasma samples were obtained from consecutive patients with

A Young Boy With Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis Presenting With Vaccine-Related Granulomatous Dermatitis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Cutaneous eruptions associated with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) have been reported in 6%-63% of patients. Clinical findings of these skin lesions vary widely and include maculopapular rashes, ulcers, and violaceous nodules. Corresponding histologic findings are also variable and are considered nonspecific. We report the case of a 4-year-old boy who initially developed a widespread popular-pustular rash 2 weeks after his 12-month measles, mumps, and rubella vaccinations. These resolved with scarring then recurred following his 24-month vaccinations. Multiple skin biopsies were nega

Mumps in Vaccinated Children and Adolescents: 2007-2019.

BACKGROUND: Despite a >99% reduction in US mumps cases after the introduction of mumps vaccine in 1967, outbreaks have occurred in schools and other settings involving vaccinated children and adolescents since 2006. METHODS: We analyzed mumps cases reported by US health departments to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System. We present the incidence and vaccination status of pediatric cases (age <18 years) during 2007-2019 and describe demographic, clinical, and vaccination characteristics of pediatric cases reported during the most recent resurgence in 2015-2019. RESULTS: Durin

Acceptance of universal varicella vaccination among Swiss pediatricians and general practitioners who treat pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Over the last two decades, several countries have initiated universal varicella vaccination (UVV) programs in infants. In 2019, the Swiss National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG) decided to start evaluating the introduction of universal varicella vaccination. There is a theoretical concern that suboptimal vaccination coverage could lead to a shift in the varicella incidence to older age groups, thereby potentially increasing complication rates. To achieve a high vaccination coverage rate, it is important that practicing physicians comply with a potential recommendatio

Vaccine hesitancy among people with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: The current severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has raised awareness of vaccine hesitancy. Specific reasons for vaccine hesitancy among people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) have not been fully described. Notably, pwMS may experience higher morbidity from vaccine-preventable diseases such as influenza, pneumococcal disease, and human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated warts and malignancies. Furthermore, screening for immunity against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) is not standard practice, despite a resurgence of measles and mumps outbreaks in Euro

Thoughts, beliefs and concepts concerning infectious childhood diseases of physicians practicing homeopathic, anthroposophic and conventional medicine - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Physicians who include complementary medicine in their practice are thought to have an understanding of health and disease different from that of colleagues practicing conventional medicine. The aim of this study was to identify and compare the thoughts and concepts concerning infectious childhood diseases (measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, pertussis and scarlet fever) of physicians practicing homeopathic, anthroposophic and conventional medicine. METHODS: This qualitative study used semistructured interviews. Participating physicians were either general practitioners or pediat

Fatal Mumps Myocarditis Associated with Left Ventricular Non-Compaction.

BACKGROUND Myocarditis is a rare but potentially fatal complication of mumps virus infection. Left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC) is a rare congenital abnormality that can lead to development of low cardiac output, cardiac dysfunction, arrhythmias, or sudden cardiac death. To the best of our knowledge, no autopsy cases of mumps myocarditis with LVNC have been reported in the literature. Here, we report an autopsy case of a 21-month-old girl who died due to mumps myocarditis associated with an undiagnosed LVNC. CASE REPORT Postmortem computed tomography demonstrated bilaterally enlarged paro

Equine small intestinal angiomatosis.

A 6-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat was presented because of a 4-week history of upper respiratory noise and suspected upper respiratory tract infection that were unresponsive to antibiotics. On physical examination, the cat had multiple cranial nerve deficits involving cranial nerves III, V, VII, and potentially VIII. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head under general anesthesia was conducted. During the MRI, before intravenous contrast administration, the mandibular and parotid salivary glands became acutely symmetrically enlarged. Subsequent cytology of the salivary gl

Measles-What's Old Is New Again.

Measles (rubeola) was once nearly eradicated in the United States. Unfortunately, it has reappeared, with more than three times the number of confirmed cases in 2019 than in 2018. The virus, which produces a distinct rash that appears within days of exposure, can spread quickly and can produce severe complications. There is no cure; treatment is supportive care. Measles was once a minimal concern in the United States due to high vaccination rates. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that, because of the increase in individuals traveling to countries with high rates of measle

Mumps: an Update on Outbreaks, Vaccine Efficacy, and Genomic Diversity.

Mumps is an acute viral infection characterized by inflammation of the parotid and other salivary glands. Persons with mumps are infectious from 2 days before through 5 days after parotitis onset, and transmission is through respiratory droplets. Despite the success of mumps vaccination programs in the United States and parts of Europe, a recent increase in outbreaks of mumps virus infections among fully vaccinated populations has been reported. Although the effectiveness of the mumps virus component of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is suboptimal, a range of contributing factors has

Effect of vaccination on severity and infectiousness of measles during an outbreak in the Netherlands, 2013-2014.

An outbreak of measles in the Netherlands in 2013-2014 provided an opportunity to assess the effect of MMR vaccination on severity and infectiousness of measles.Measles is notifiable in the Netherlands. We used information on vaccination, hospitalisation, complications, and most likely source(s) of infection from cases notified during the outbreak. When a case was indicated as a likely source for at least one other notified case, we defined it as infectious. We estimated the age-adjusted effect of vaccination on severity and infectiousness with logistic regression.Of 2676 notified cases, 2539

Viral-Attributed Acute Pancreatitis: A Systematic Review.

Infectious etiologies are rare cause of acute pancreatitis (AP). We sought to investigate the frequency of viral-attributed AP (VIAP) and describe its natural course and clinical features. Comprehensive review of PubMed and EMBASE in English until December 31, 2019, was performed. AP diagnosis and severity were defined per the Revised Atlanta Classification. Viral infections were diagnosed by serology and/or histology. A diagnosis of viral infection, with a concurrent AP diagnosis, a temporal resolution of both entities, and the attempt to exclude the most common etiologies of AP defined VIAP.

Kansas Family Physicians Perceptions of Parental Vaccination Hesitancy.

INTRODUCTION: In the past few decades, patients expressing the idea that vaccines are unsafe or unneeded have been experienced increasingly by physicians and other healthcare providers. Discussions with patients regarding their reasons for vaccine refusals are important, as it may provide information that can be utilized in an intervention to increase vaccination rates and combat the spread of diseases that are making a resurgence in the United States. The main objective of this study was to explore the perceptions of family physicians as to why parents in Kansas may be vaccine hesitant. METH

Disruption of the Dimer-Dimer Interaction of the Mumps Virus Attachment Protein Head Domain, Aided by an Anion Located at the Interface, Compromises Membrane Fusion Triggering.

Mumps virus (MuV), an enveloped negative-strand RNA virus belonging to the family Paramyxoviridae, enters the host cell through membrane fusion mediated by two viral envelope proteins, an attachment protein hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (MuV-HN) and a fusion (F) protein. However, how the binding of MuV-HN to glycan receptors triggers membrane fusion is not well understood. The crystal structure of the MuV-HN head domain forms a tetramer (dimer of dimers) like other paramyxovirus attachment proteins. In the structure, a sulfate ion (SO42-) was found at the interface between two dimers, which may

Primary Measles Encephalitis.

AUDIENCE: This scenario was developed to educate emergency medicine residents on the diagnosis and management of primary measles encephalitis. INTRODUCTION: Measles is a highly infectious ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus whose prevalence in the United States has continued to increase despite being declared eliminated in 2000,1 and larger outbreaks have been noted among those who elect not to vaccinate.2 The recommended live-attenuated measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine schedule for pediatrics includes one routine dose at 12-15 months of age and a second dose between 4-6 years of age with a

RATIONALE: Kawasaki disease affects multiple organ systems. Its typical symptoms include fever, rash, oropharyngeal mucosal erythema, bilateral non-exudative conjunctivitis, cervical lymphadenopathy, extremity changes, and membranous desquamation of the fingers and toes. In severe cases, cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, neurological, and genitourinary complications may occur. In the early stage, Kawasaki disease is often manifested by uncommon symptoms, such as pyuria, meningitis, shock, and retropharyngeal or parapharyngeal abscess, which may delay diagnosis and

[Postvaccinal complications and management of suspected cases].

In all developed countries there is the possibility to protect oneself from vaccine-preventable diseases. However, not all individuals make use of this option. It is precisely in highly developed countries where a trend to vaccination hesitancy is noticeable, i. e. reluctance to get oneself or one's children vaccinated. The reasons why this is so are many, but the most important reason is the fear of postvaccinal complications, especially of those that imply sequelae or those with fatal outcomes.Whereas there are some proven associations between vaccination and adverse drug reaction, for examp

Measles in pregnancy.

Measles is becoming more prevalent; it can be difficult to diagnose, with severe complications in pregnancy. We report a case of measles in a 27-year-old, parainfluenza virus type 2-infected woman who was 32 weeks pregnant. She presented with fever, tachycardia, sore throat and a pruritic rash. She never had the measles, mumps, rubella vaccine. Serology showed raised inflammatory markers with lymphopoenia. Throat swab showed parainfluenza virus. Chest radiography was normal. Despite appropriate antimicrobial therapy, she developed worsening respiratory failure requiring premature delivery via

Immunity to Vaccine-preventable Viral Infections in Australians Being Evaluated for Liver Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine-preventable viral infections are associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. Current guidelines recommend routine screening and vaccination of all patients before solid organ transplantation. We studied rates of immunity against vaccine-preventable viruses in liver transplantation (LT) recipients. METHODS: We retrospectively studied consecutive adult patients who underwent first deceased donor LT at a single center between August 2008 and October 2017. Viruses studied were hepatitis A (HAV), hepatitis B (HBV), varicella zoster v
