Trends in Mortality of Patients with Central Venous Catheters versus Arteriovenous Accesses for Hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines favor arteriovenous (AV) access over central venous catheters (CVCs) for hemodialysis due in part to lower infection risk. Nevertheless, most patients initiate hemodialysis with a CVC. We used US Renal Data System data to evaluate whether the comparative mortality risk of these vascular access strategies has changed over time among patients with incident kidney failure. METHODS: In this observational study, we evaluated community-dwelling, functionally independent adults (aged 18-85 years) initiating hemodialysis with a CVC in 2013-2022, excluding those with a maturing

Collaborative role of muscle ultrasonography and subjective global-nutritional assessment in pediatric end-stage renal disease.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional well-being in childhood chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents a multidisciplinary problem. Nevertheless, reliable nutritional status assessment considering underlying pathogenesis remains challenging. So, we aimed to assess the collaborative role of quadriceps muscle ultrasonography and subjective global nutritional assessment (SGNA) in evaluating childhood end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis (ESRD-HD). METHODS: Sixty-eight children with ESRD-HD were enrolled in addition to 68 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. All participants underwent nutritional screening

TriKey AutoRefine: A Stability-Aware Framework Built on Pan-organ Segmentation Radiomics for Chronic Kidney Disease Staging.

Accurate and generalizable imaging‑based staging of chronic kidney disease remains challenging due to segmentation variability, feature instability, and heterogeneous clinical presentations. To address these gaps, a clinically aligned pan‑organ radiomics workflow for multi‑class chronic kidney disease staging was proposed. A total of 587 subjects from 3 centers were included, with chest and abdominal computed tomography scans paired with clinical and body-composition measurements. Segmentation‑induced variability was quantified within the pan‑organ segmentation system, revealing systematic ana

Risk assessment of oral exposure to cyclic siloxanes - octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) as an example.

Published data on in vivo toxicity of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) on rat kidneys was re-evaluated. It turned out that a molecular and biochemical mode of action (MOA) of D4 induced effects on kidneys and its human relevance is missing, which remains a gap in current knowledge. Increased kidney weights (also in recovery groups) were considered as D4 specific adverse effects. In vitro, cytotoxicity was observed for D4 in human (HEK293, CaKi-1) and canine (MDCK) kidney cell lines, while no toxicity was observed in human hepatic cell line HepG2. Proteomic profiling at low toxic doses, using

Who Gets by with Help from Friends? Multilevel Associations Between Loneliness, Friend Support, and Emotion Regulation in Adolescents with and Without Self-Injury.

Adolescence is a life period marked by increased emotionality, and, for some, volatile friendships and emotion dysregulation. Yet little research has examined peer processes in relation to adolescent emotion dysregulation from a dynamic perspective. This 3-wave longitudinal study examined two peer-related processes - loneliness and friend support - in association with emotion dysregulation with data collected during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, we examined if these associations differed in those who had histories of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), a behavior known to be associated with emo

Preferences for digital health services among patients with chronic kidney disease: a discrete choice experiment.

BACKGROUND: Digital health technologies offer novel approaches for chronic kidney disease management. However, quantitative evidence on patient preferences for digital health services remains limited. There is a critical need for more evidence on the sustainability and optimization of chronic kidney disease management in China, especially from the demand side. Policymakers require detailed data on the needs of chronic kidney disease patients regarding digital health services. METHODS: A discrete choice experiment was conducted to measure the preferences of people with chronic kidney disease.

Parathyroid hormone, pulmonary artery pressure and right ventricular function in patients undergoing/awaiting hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, with pulmonary hypertension (PH) and right ventricular (RV) dysfunction being especially detrimental. Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), common in CKD-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD), has been linked to vascular problems, but its specific role in pulmonary vascular disease and RV function in hemodialysis (HD) patients remains unclear. This study examined the relationship between serum intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), pulmonary artery pressure (PAP), and RV function in CKD patients (

Pentoxifylline for chronic kidney disease in people with diabetes: a meta-analysis of randomized trials.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Pentoxifylline is an inexpensive anti-inflammatory agent tested in diabetic kidney disease for four decades; prior meta-analyses report reduced albuminuria. Whether it is secure, extends to kidney function, or reaches hard outcomes is unclear; we hypothesized the surrogate evidence might be conclusive and the hard-outcome evidence not. METHODS: We reviewed randomized trials of oral pentoxifylline in diabetic kidney disease to June 2026, without language restriction. Co-primary surrogate outcomes were albuminuria (ratio of means) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR)
