Measles Vaccine Boosters in Immunocompromised Adults to Reduce Morbidity and Mortality From Acute Measles Infection: A Scoping Review.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness associated with significant global mortality, despite the availability of an effective vaccine. As vaccine hesitancy continues to increase following the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with a lack of measles-specific antiviral agents, the risk of outbreaks and epidemics remains elevated. Immunocompromised individuals have a higher risk of serious complications from measles, especially because the live-attenuated measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine may be contraindicated in severely immunocompromised patients. As such, these individuals depend on herd im

Comparisons of kinanthropometric variables and physical performance in adolescent soccer players of different biological maturation.

Biological maturation is a crucial factor in the physical development of adolescent soccer players, affecting key performance-related variables essential for talent development. This study investigated differences across maturation stages in kinanthropometric and physical performance parameters in young male soccer players. Forty-three players (13.26 ± 1.03 years) were classified into pre-, circa-, and post-peak height velocity (PHV) groups, with maturation status assessed using a validated AI-based method (China-05). Participants then completed a series of kinanthropometric assessments, inclu

A Case Series of Anaesthesia Mumps - Could Drugs be the Cause?

INTRODUCTION: Acute parotid gland enlargement is an extremely rare post-surgical complication. Several etiological factors have been proposed, including preoperative dehydration, medications that cause an increase in viscosity of glandular secretions or loss of muscle tone and retrograde passage of air into the parotid glands, prolonged surgery, and operative position of the patient leading to pooling of secretions of the gland. CASE REPRESENTATION: We present a series of two cases that developed bilateral enlargement of parotid glands post-operatively. Case 1 was a 30-year-old male who under

Delayed neurological events after mumps vaccination: implications for surveillance and clinical recognition.

We report a case of febrile status epilepticus with aseptic meningitis occurring 23 days after mumps vaccination (Hoshino strain) in a previously healthy male infant. The vaccine strain was identified in cerebrospinal fluid by reverse transcription-PCR and sequencing. This case may illustrate potential blind spots in current vaccine safety surveillance, which often rely on short monitoring windows and passive reporting. It suggests that consideration of longer surveillance periods, improved clinician awareness of delayed neurological complications and greater diagnostic vigilance may be warran

Anaesthetic mumps associated with laryngeal mask airway use - a case report.

Acute postoperative sialadenitis (or the anaesthetic mumps) is a very rare complication of anaesthesia. It is not limited to general anaesthesia only. It is usually benign but can lead to complete airway obstruction. Its mechanism of action is likely multifactorial, but primarily due to obstruction of the salivary glands. In this case we present a 67-year-old female who has experienced this rare complication twice. After examining previous anaesthetics for commonality, we were able to test the hypothesis that in this particular case the anaesthetic mumps were in fact due to laryngeal mask airw

Iodine-Induced Sialadenitis Requiring Intubation After Intracranial Venous Sinus Stenting: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Iodine-induced sialadenitis (iodine-induced mumps), first described in 1956, has been reported in more than 100 cases in the medical literature. It involves acute swelling of the salivary glands, resembling the effects of the mumps virus, after administration of iodine-containing compounds. It is most commonly observed after iodinated contrast administration, although the exact pathophysiology remains unclear. CASE REPORT A 37-year-old woman underwent a cervical-cerebral angiogram, followed by venous sinus stenting 1 week later for idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Approximately

Post-infectious Basal Ganglia Encephalitis Caused by Mumps: A Case Series.

BackgroundMumps is a highly neurotropic virus causing a wide variety of neurologic complications. Post-/para-infectious basal ganglia encephalitis is one of its rare complications, with higher morbidity compared with other complications.CasesWe present 5 cases with basal ganglia encephalitis secondary to mumps infection. A recent history of parotitis or febrile illness with serologic evidence of mumps, combined with acute onset of movement disorders, behavioral changes with or without seizures, and basal ganglia abnormalities on neuroimaging, suggests the diagnosis. The occurrence of extrapyra

Outcomes of Cochlear Implantation in Mumps-Induced Single-Sided Deafness: A Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND Mumps, a viral infection from the Paramyxoviridae family, is a rare but significant cause of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), especially in children. While typically unilateral, mumps-induced SNHL can result in profound single-sided deafness, for which cochlear implantation may be considered when hearing aids are ineffective. This study aimed to evaluate outcomes of cochlear implantation in patients with single-sided deafness caused by mumps. MATERIAL AND METHODS This retrospective study included 14 patients (10 women, 4 men; mean age 39.4) with single-sided deafness caused by mum

Viral orchitis and male infertility: A comprehensive review of pathogenic mechanisms and outcomes.

Male reproductive tract infections and inflammations are recognized as significant aetiological contributors of infertility. Orchitis and epididymo-orchitis caused by systemic or local infection, as well as non-infectious aetiological causes, are of special concern with respect to their effect on male reproductive function. Male fertility can be affected by various microorganisms especially viruses. Viruses like HIV and mumps can target testicular cells, result in orchitis. This inflammation of the testes can impair fertility and, in some cases, increase the risk of developing testicular cance

[Pediatric Mumps Parotid Abscess with Fistula Formation: A Case Report].

INTRODUCTION: Mumps infection primarily leads to parotitis in children. While complications such as orchitis and encephalitis are uncommonly reported, the development of a parotid abscess due to mumps is extremely rare. We present the first described case of parotid abscess secondary to mumps, complicated by a persistent salivary fistula. BACKGROUND: A 21-month-old unvaccinated, healthy boy presented with right-sided cheek swelling lasting 15 days. Prior treatment at home with amoxicillin-clavulanate did not yield improvement. Sonographic evaluation revealed an enlarged right parotid gland wi

Anesthesia Mumps With Transient Airway Compromise Following Spinal Anesthesia for Emergency Cesarean Delivery.

The authors present a 44-year-old woman who developed bilateral parotid swelling following spinal anesthesia for an emergency cesarean section. Shortly after surgery, the patient developed acute facial swelling associated with pain, trismus, and transient respiratory distress. Ultrasonographic evaluation was consistent with acute parotitis. Conservative management, including intravenous hydration, corticosteroids, analgesics, and supportive care, resulted in complete clinical recovery within 3 days. Although perioperative parotid swelling is an uncommon complication after spinal anesthesia, th

Contrast-induced sialadenitis associated with neuroendovascular aneurysm embolization: Two illustrative cases.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-induced sialadenitis is a rare inflammatory response to iodinated contrast that may present as acute parotid or submandibular swelling. Its mechanism remains poorly defined, making prompt recognition after neuroendovascular procedures essential. CASE DESCRIPTION: Two patients developed acute neck swelling after elective endovascular treatment of unruptured intracranial aneurysms with iopamidol. The first underwent flow-diverter placement for a right paraclinoid internal carotid artery aneurysm using 140 mL of contrast and developed right cervical swelling within hours. Co

Mumps Virus-Induced TNF-α Production Through Toll-Like Receptor 2 Mediates Testicular Dysfunction in Male Mice.

Mumps virus (MuV) infection may lead to male infertility. However, the pathological mechanisms of testicular dysfunctions are largely unknown. This study aims to the mechanisms by which MuV infection induces testicular dysfunctions in mice. Intraperitoneal injection of MuV induced up-regulation of cytokines and chemokines including tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), monocyte tractant-1, IP-10. Moreover, MuV infection induced male germ cell apoptosis and impaired spermatogenesis. Notably, MuV injection did not evidently induce dysfunction in Toll-like receptor 2 knockout (TLR2-/-) or TNF-α-/-
