Mumps Outbreak in Shivamogga, India (2023-2024): Age-Specific Attack Rates, Complications, and an Economic Case for Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccine Inclusion in the Universal Immunization Programme.

Background Recurrent mumps outbreaks continue to be reported in India, where the vaccine is not part of the national immunization schedule. Robust, age‑specific burden data from outbreak settings remain limited. Methods We conducted a retrospective investigation of pediatric mumps during epidemiologic weeks (EW)49‑2023 to EW8‑2024 across Subbaiah Institute facilities in Shivamogga, Karnataka, India. Clinically suspected cases were line-listed; laboratory confirmation used anti-mumps IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). We described demographics, complications, and length of stay (LOS

Measles - retrospective study of cases reported in a national notification system, Czech Republic, 2018-2024.

BACKGROUND: In response to the recent increase in measles cases and outbreaks across Europe, Czech surveillance data were analysed. The aim was also to evaluate the effect of vaccination on measles complications. METHODS: Cases of measles reported to the national surveillance system according to the EU case definition (2018) between 2018–2024, were analysed. Demographic characteristics were assessed using descriptive analysis (counts and proportions). Logistic regression with an odds ratio (OR) supplemented with the 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was calculated to measure the association bet

Mumps disease and vaccination in Africa: A scoping review.

Mumps, though often self-limiting, can cause serious complications such as meningitis, orchitis, infertility, deafness, and seizures. Despite rising cases in Africa, most countries do not vaccinate against mumps. This review compiled available evidence on mumps in Africa, focusing on morbidity, mortality, vaccine safety, transmission, and molecular characterization. A systematic search across major databases identified 22 relevant studies published between 1994 and 2024. Nearly half of the studies (45%; n = 10/22) were published in the most recent period (2018-2024), indicating increased resea

Human neutralizing antibodies targeting the measles virus hemagglutinin and fusion surface proteins.

Measles virus (MeV), a highly transmissible paramyxovirus, can cause severe complications and death, particularly in infants and young children. How and where human antibodies target and neutralize MeV remain unclear. Here, we report a panel of human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specific for MeV hemagglutinin (H) and fusion (F) surface proteins, derived from the memory B cells of a Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccinee. We mapped four and five major epitope clusters on H and F, respectively, and structurally characterized representative mAbs from each epitope cluster. MAbs against both H and F

[Serological tests based on viral glycoproteins for detecting neutralizing antibodies to measles, mumps and rubella viruses].

INTRODUCTION: Measles, mumps and rubella viruses are highly contagious viruses that can cause serious clinical outcomes, complications and death. Neutralizing antibodies against measles, mumps and rubella viruses are a good indicator of clinical protection against these infections, but they are difficult to measure. THE AIM: To develop a serological glycoprotein-based passive hemagglutination reaction (gpPHAR) tests for the detection of neutralizing antibodies to measles, mumps and rubella viruses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Human and animal cell cultures from the collection of the I.I. Mechniko

Estimates of vaccine effectiveness against measles and mumps: 14 years follow-up of a large cohort in Wales, UK.

BACKGROUND: Uptake of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine in Wales is high. However, sporadic measles cases still occur and there are large mumps outbreaks every few years. In this study, the long-term vaccine effectiveness (VE) of vaccines containing measles and mumps is assessed. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 822 116 individuals aged 1-30 years were followed up between 1 January 2007 and 31 December 2020. Welsh Demographic Service data were linked to vaccination status from the national vaccination register and primary care records. Outcomes were identified by linking to laboratory confi

Post‑vaccination Acute Pancreatitis in an Infant: A Report of a Rare Case and Brief Literature Review.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is increasingly recognized in the pediatric population, although it remains uncommon in infants and young children. In this age group, diagnosis is often delayed because clinical manifestations, such as irritability, vomiting, and feeding intolerance, are nonspecific and may occur in the absence of classic abdominal pain. Most pediatric cases are mild and self‑limiting; however, severity can range from mild to severe depending on the presence and duration of organ dysfunction and the development of local or systemic complications at presentation.  A wide spectrum of eti

MMR Vaccination and Hen's Egg Allergy: Bridging the Gap Between Evidence and Clinical Practice.

Background: Measles has re-emerged in recent years as a public health concern in the context of insufficient vaccination coverage. Some children experience significant delays in receiving, or refuse to take, the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination, often due to concerns related to hen's egg allergy (HEA). Methods: In this study, we retrospectively assessed the safety of MMR vaccination (Priorix®, GlaxoSmithKline, Belgium) in patients with HEA hospitalised at our clinic. Detailed medical histories were collected, along with skin prick tests and measurements of specific IgE against milk

Two novel kindreds with autosomal recessive STAT2 deficiency.

STAT2 is a transcription factor in the type I/III interferon (IFN) antiviral response. Autosomal recessive STAT2 deficiency, reported in 12 kindreds from nine countries, underlies severe viral infections and hyperinflammation. We report three patients from two kindreds from Portugal and Algeria, respectively, with novel homozygous STAT2 mutations. The three patients developed complications following live attenuated measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, including hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) in one patient, who responded to treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG), steroids,

Clinical progress note: Mumps.

Mumps was a common childhood viral illness before the implementation of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination in 1967. There was a significant decrease in mumps cases in the postvaccine era; however, there has been an increase in outbreaks in the United States over the past two decades. Complications of mumps can lead to hospitalization and require a high index of suspicion to diagnose. Early recognition and adequate infection control measures are imperative in outbreak management. Additional studies to inform public health guidelines are needed, including data on the efficacy of a

Measles: A Global Public Health Emergency!

Measles is a highly contagious vaccine-preventable disease that was once controlled with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccinations but has reemerged in the United States and globally as a public health emergency. Despite availability of a safe and effective vaccine, declining vaccination rates driven by vaccine hesitancy, access issues, and clustering of unvaccinated individuals have led to measles outbreaks. Since January 2026 in the United States, both the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC; 1,654 cases) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC; 1,671 cases) have reported a high number

Safety and immunogenicity of live-attenuated measles-mumps-rubella vaccination after pediatric heart transplantation.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, global outbreaks of measles and mumps have re-emerged as herd immunity declines. Pediatric heart transplant recipients are at increased risk for severe vaccine-preventable infections, yet live vaccines have historically been avoided due to safety concerns. Data on post-transplant measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination remain limited. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective single-center cohort study of pediatric heart transplant recipients who received live-attenuated MMR vaccination between January 2022 and January 2026 under a structured post-transplant vaccinati

Pediatric Measles Resurgence: Implications for Acute and Critical Care Nursing Practice.

BACKGROUND: The United States declared endemic measles eliminated in 2000. However, outbreaks continued, with resurgences in 2019 and 2025. In 2025, more than 2200 cases across 48 outbreaks, the most since 1992, were reported. In the first half of 2026, 2073 cases were reported. Declining measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination rates have increased susceptibility among children. Acute and critical care nurses are central to early recognition and management of measles for optimal outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To summarize current evidence on measles epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation,

Mumps Vaccination Policies and Epidemiological Consequences: A Comparative Review of the United States and Japan.

Mumps remains a public health challenge worldwide despite being a vaccine-preventable disease. This review outlines the historical development and contrasting mumps vaccination policies in the United States and Japan and their epidemiological consequences. In the United States, where the two-dose measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is routinely administered, the incidence of mumps has markedly decreased. Recently, however, sporadic outbreaks have emerged, driven by breakthrough infections among vaccinated individuals. These resurgences are driven largely by waning immunity, coupled with

Recurrent Mumps in a Fully Vaccinated Young Adult With a Prior Breakthrough Infection: A Case Report.

Mumps is a vaccine-preventable viral disease that typically presents with parotid gland swelling and constitutional symptoms. Although widespread immunization has substantially reduced disease incidence, outbreaks continue to occur among vaccinated populations, raising concerns regarding waning immunity and vaccine failure. Recurrent mumps following both prior natural infection and complete vaccination is uncommon and remains infrequently reported. We describe a 21-year-old woman who presented with a four-day history of fever, malaise, myalgia, and progressive painful swelling of the left paro

Immunogenicity and safety of an investigational varicella zoster vaccine in toddlers aged 12-15 months: results of a phase II, controlled, randomized trial.

Varicella is an acute, highly contagious infectious disease that primarily impacts young children with approximately 90% of cases occurring under the age of 15. Due to the high incidence of varicella infection, the potential for serious complications, and the significant economic and public health burden, vaccination of toddlers against varicella is included in routine vaccination programs in many countries. This study assessed the immunogenicity and safety of the investigational varicella vaccine (VNS) compared to a licensed, current standard-of-care vaccine. In this phase II, observer-blind,

Outcomes of Live Virus Vaccination in Patients With Vascular Anomalies Being Treated With Sirolimus.

BACKGROUND: Live vaccination in patients with vascular anomalies (VA) receiving sirolimus remains controversial due to immunosuppressive effects and theoretical risks. PROCEDURE: This single-center retrospective study included patients with VA less than 4 years old at the start of sirolimus therapy who were incompletely vaccinated. Immunologic evaluation during sirolimus therapy was categorized as normal, abnormal, or no/partial evaluation. Based on results, patients were encouraged to proceed with live attenuated vaccinations (varicella zoster virus [VZV]; measles-mumps-rubella [MMR]) or dis

No substantial causal effect of genetic liability to viral infections on subacute thyroiditis: A large-scale Mendelian randomization analysis.

The association between viral infections and subacute thyroiditis (SAT) has been recognized, yet whether a genetic causal relationship exists between them remains unclear. To address this, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to investigate this relationship. Genetic instruments for exposure to common viruses were derived from published genome-wide association study summary statistics. Inverse-variance weighted was the primary analysis, supplemented by MR-Egger and weighted median methods. Sensitivity analyses included tests for heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy.
