Introduction and Objective: Imaging rates are low after ureteroscopy in the United States. Detecting postoperative hydronephrosis is important to minimize patient morbidity, and predicting patients at greatest risk for new postoperative hydronephrosis could inform imaging guidelines. We used data from a clinical registry to understand new-onset postoperative hydronephrosis and associated risk factors after ureteroscopy and stone intervention. Methods: Using the Michigan Urological Surgery Improvement Collaborative registry, we retrospectively identified all ureteroscopy for urolithiasis betwee

BACKGROUND: The management of long proximal ureteral strictures poses a significant challenge, with traditional options such as renal autotransplantation or bowel interposition associated with substantial morbidity. This study explores the use of robotic ureteroplasty with lingual mucosal graft (RU-LMG) as a minimally invasive approach for treating complex ureteral strictures. We present a multi-institutional cohort to evaluate its effectiveness in managing proximal and mid-ureteral strictures.
METHODS: This multi-center, retrospective study analyzed perioperative data from 76 patients who un

RATIONALE: Ureteral stricture is a complex urological condition often requiring surgical intervention. Autologous tissue grafts, such as lingual mucosa, have emerged as a promising option for reconstruction due to their favorable biocompatibility and vascularity. However, reports on complications associated with these techniques remain limited.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 59-year-old male with a history of bilateral kidney stones, chronic renal failure, hypertension, and multiple prior ureteral surgeries presented with left ureteral obstruction and severe hydronephrosis. He had been on regular dialys

OBJECTIVES: Patients with a poorly functioning kidney, defined as less than 20% differential renal function, have historically been considered poor candidates for ipsilateral ureteral reconstruction for stricture. To determine if renal function can be safely preserved in poorly functioning kidneys with ureteral stricture, we evaluated patient outcomes following ureteral reconstruction.
METHODS: We conducted a review of 114 adult patients who underwent ureteral reconstructive surgery at our institution between 2013 and 2023. Patients with poorly functioning ipsilateral kidneys were identified

Megaureter, characterised by a dilated ureter without evidence of obstruction at the vesicoureteral junction, is a condition primarily associated with paediatric populations. It is often diagnosed early in life due to urinary tract infections, hydronephrosis, or other urinary symptoms. In contrast, megaureters in adults are rarely encountered, particularly in asymptomatic individuals. This discrepancy in age-related presentation raises important questions regarding the natural history, detection, and clinical relevance of the condition in older patients. This paper presents a rare case of an i

INTRODUCTION: Renal colic is a common reason for patients to present to the emergency department (ED). The most common reasons for this pain are usually renal in origin. Here we present the case of a 45-year-old woman with severe right-sided flank pain and associated hydronephrosis secondary to ureteral obstruction caused by the suction of a menstrual cup.
CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old female presented to the ED with sudden severe right-sided flank pain. The patient endorsed nausea without vomiting, fever, chills, hematuria, or dysuria. She stated that she was currently having her menstrual peri

BACKGROUND: The application of metal ureteral stents emerges as a promising therapeutic alternative for complex ureteral strictures. Nevertheless, the conventional segmented stent design predisposes to complications such as migration and urothelial hyperplasia, leading to treatment failure. This study introduced an innovative HUAXl head-tail stress-free (HTSF) technique and to compare the long-term effectiveness and safety between HTSF and traditional segmented placement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort analysis evaluated 417 patients undergoing ureteral stent placement (HTSF

BACKGROUND: Ureteral strictures pose significant challenges in urological surgery, requiring precise localization of stenotic segments for effective resection. Traditional rigid ureteroscopy-assisted techniques involve positioning limitations and procedural inefficiencies. This study evaluates the safety and efficacy of a novel approach combining flexible ureteroscopy and laparoscopy for ureteroureterostomy, focusing on improved intraoperative navigation and reduced procedural complexity.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted in 12 patients (7 males, 5 females; median age 50 years)

PURPOSE: We aim to determine if ureteral rest is necessary prior to distal ureteral reconstruction with reimplantation with or without psoas hitch and/or Boari flap.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients who underwent ureteral reimplantation at a single institution from December 2016 to April 2023. We included all reimplantation techniques, including psoas hitch and Boari flap. Patients were stratified based on if they had ureteral rest, defined as the absence of a ureteral stent for at least 4 weeks prior to the operation. Patient demographics, stricture characteristics, and peri

INTRODUCTION: Intramural ureteral urothelial carcinoma can be difficult to diagnose, especially when presenting without mucosal abnormalities or positive cytology. In such cases, percutaneous biopsy may provide an alternative diagnostic approach.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old man presented with acute renal failure caused by bilateral hydronephrosis. Cystoscopy showed no mucosal abnormality. Retrograde pyeloureterography revealed bilateral distal ureteral strictures, but urine cytology from ureteral catheters was negative. Imaging revealed a submucosal mass on the right dorsal bladder wall.

PURPOSE: Ureteral strictures are a well-documented pathology in urology, commonly resulting from congenital anomalies, iatrogenic injury, or other acquired conditions such as infection, trauma, or radiation. While ischemic and nonischemic strictures are recognized, bilateral idiopathic ureteral strictures remain rare, particularly when associated with systemic thrombotic microangiopathy. This case report describes a 25-year-old female with a history of IgA deficiency and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), who developed bilateral ureteral strictures following envenomation by a brown rec

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Robot-assisted buccal mucosa graft (BMG) ureteroplasty was introduced a decade ago and has since gained wide adoption within the urology community. However, available data on the outcomes of robot-assisted BMG ureteroplasty remain limited, and no large European series has been published to date. This study aims to report the outcomes of a multicenter European experience with robot-assisted BMG ureteroplasty (RBMGU) for the management of ureteral strictures.
METHODS: Medical records of all the patients who underwent RBMGU for ureteral strictures at four European cente

INTRODUCTION: Complex proximal ureteral strictures can pose significant surgical challenges, including long or obliterated strictures, inability to perform primary anastomotic repairs, fixed renal pelvis, impaired vascular supply from prior surgeries, and poor healing of the proximal ureter. We describe a novel surgical technique for addressing these issues.
METHODS: Our technique involves a combination of ureterolysis, renal pelvis flap creation, and buccal mucosal grafting. The procedure commences with exposure of the renal pelvis, creation of a U-shaped renal pelvis flap as the posterior p

This study aims to discuss the role of dynamic renal scintigraphy (DRS) in diagnosing congenital midureteral stricture (CMUS) as a rare and challenging condition in children, often confused with ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO), leading to inadequate management. We retrospectively analyzed DRS data from 133 cases of hydronephrosis from 2015 to 2023, including 3 CMUS and 15 UPJO by Crossing Vessels (CV). Preoperative protocol involved ultrasound and DRS. We adhered to the paediatric protocol of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine, only radiotracer selection depended on availab

Congenital ureteral stricture is a rare but important differential diagnosis in antenatal hydronephrosis, often mistaken for ureteropelvic junction obstruction. We report the case of a 5-year-old girl who underwent surgery for suspected ureteropelvic junction obstruction based on imaging findings, including renal ultrasound and scintigraphy. Intraoperatively, the pyeloureteral junction appeared normal, but a proximal ureteral stricture was discovered 4 cm distal to the renal pelvis. Surgical management consisted of resecting the narrowed segment and performing a tension-free end-to-end uretera
