Urinothorax is a rare cause of pleural effusion resulting from the presence of urine in the pleural space due to disruption of the urinary tract or obstructive uropathy. Only a limited number of cases have been reported in the literature to date. It is an underrecognized condition frequently delayed in diagnosis when respiratory symptoms predominate over genitourinary complaints. Prompt recognition is essential, as management must be directed at the underlying uropathy rather than the pleural effusion itself. We report a case of urinothorax secondary to pyelonephritis with obstructing ureteric

Urine analysis remains a fundamental tool for diagnosing renal and urothelial diseases. Although urinary sediment microscopy is primarily used to detect haematuria, leukocyturia, and other formed elements, it may occasionally reveal exfoliated malignant cells that prompt further diagnostic investigation. The detection of Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma (UTUC) through routine urinary sediment examination is uncommon, as voided urine samples typically show limited sensitivity for tumours arising in the upper urinary tract. We report the case of a 42-year-old woman who initially presented with p

Ureteroplasty using autologous grafts or flaps has emerged as an important reconstructive option for complex proximal or mid-ureteral strictures. Among available tissues, vesical mucosa may be a promising graft material because it is covered by urothelium, readily available, and well adapted to the urinary environment. This study aimed to present our surgical technique and perioperative outcomes of robot-assisted vesical mucosal graft (VMG) ureteroplasty for a mid-ureteral stricture. A 36-year-old woman with progressive left hydronephrosis was admitted to our hospital after failed prior endour

OBJECTIVE: To compare the quality of life (QoL) and family impact scores of children with posterior urethral valves (PUV), isolated hydronephrosis (HN), and those with minor urologic conditions, referred to here as minor urologic controls (MUC).
METHODS: From December 2022 to April 2025, the PedsQL Inventory and Family Impact Module (FIM) questionnaires were distributed to patients in dedicated PUV, HN, and community-based urology clinics. Higher scores indicate better QoL. Children ≥8 years self-completed the questionnaires, while parents served as proxies for younger children. PUV patients

Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma involving the urinary system is a rare manifestation of lymphoma. Ureteric obstruction by this subtype of lymphoma can mimic other more common genitourinary or retroperitoneal conditions. The current case describes a 42-year-old female who presented with abdominal pain and hydronephrosis without findings supportive of renal or ureteric calculus. Diagnostic work-up was unremarkable, even with the employment of endoscopic evaluation. The patient's ureter was dilated and she underwent both stenting and eventual percutaneous nephrostomy tube placement. Ultimately,

We present a 35-year-old man with long-standing untreated hypertension who had no urinary symptoms, flank pain, or history of urinary tract infections and was later found to have bilateral ureteroceles with bilateral hydronephrosis and renal cortical thinning. A ureterocele is a congenital cystic dilation of the distal ureter as it inserts into the bladder that can impede urinary drainage. The initial laboratory workup for secondary hypertension was unremarkable, and he had a minimal response to first-line blood pressure management. Imaging was then sought to evaluate for structural causes of

Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is usually idiopathic, although secondary forms also occur. To assess the clinical features, laboratory parameters, imaging findings, and treatment modalities in patients with RPF. Patients diagnosed with RPF at a tertiary care center between 2000 and 2024 were included. For the literature review, PubMed was searched to identify retrospective studies including more than 45 patients with RPF published in the past ten years. Twenty-six patients (11 females) with RPF were identified. The mean age at diagnosis was 59.7 ± 12.4 years. Seventeen patients had idiopathic

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma and may present with nodal or extranodal disease. Thoracic and abdominal extranodal involvement can produce a radiographic appearance that closely mimics disseminated metastatic solid-organ malignancy, particularly when pulmonary masses, pleural abnormalities, splenic lesions, and bulky abdominal disease coexist. We report the case of an 81-year-old woman who initially presented with wheezing, productive cough, hypoxia, and dysuria and was referred for presumed pneumonia and urinary tract infection. Imagin

Intestinal involvement by urothelial malignancy is uncommon and can obscure the primary diagnosis. We report a woman in her 70s who presented with shock, profound anemia, acute kidney injury, and bilateral hydronephrosis caused by a necrotic pelvic mass suspected to arise from the bladder. Despite resuscitation and urinary decompression, she developed abdominal distention, rising lactate levels, and respiratory decline. Exploratory laparotomy revealed combined small- and large-bowel obstruction with ischemic bowel caused by an invasive pelvic mass. Pathology from the resected small bowel showe

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare extramedullary tumor composed of immature myeloid cells that may occur in association with acute myeloid leukemia or other myeloid neoplasms. We report a 75-year-old woman with JAK2-positive polycythemia vera who presented with abdominal pain, distension, and anorexia. Imaging revealed a large retroperitoneal and pelvic mass causing hydronephrosis. Biopsy demonstrated immature mononuclear cells positive for CD33, CD43, CD117, CD68, and CD163, consistent with MS with monocytic differentiation. Other malignancies were excluded, and flow cytometry was non-diagnostic

A 10-year-old male with a prior history of right epididymitis presented to the emergency department with a one-day history of right lower quadrant abdominal and right testicular pain. His initial examination was notable for café-au-lait macules and axillary freckling. An evaluation with renal ultrasound demonstrated mild left hydronephrosis, and subsequent testicular ultrasound was concerning for right epididymo-orchitis. A right lower quadrant abdominal ultrasound revealed a heterogeneous mass, and a CT of the abdomen and pelvis with and without contrast confirmed a large 14 cm × 16 cm × 16 c

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is a rare fibroinflammatory disorder that can lead to progressive encasement of retroperitoneal structures, including the aorta, inferior vena cava, ureters, and iliac vessels, most commonly resulting in ureteral obstruction. It may be idiopathic or secondary to medications, malignancy, radiotherapy, or other causes. Its radiological appearance often mimics malignant disease, which may complicate the diagnostic approach, particularly in patients with a previous oncologic history. We report the case of a 70-year-old man with a past medical history significant for chroni

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is a fibro-inflammatory condition characterised by the development of dense tissue within the retroperitoneum, which may result in the compression of adjacent structures. We report the case of a 69-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer who initially presented with right-sided hydronephrosis. Cross-sectional imaging demonstrated retroperitoneal soft tissue encasing the ureters, consistent with retroperitoneal fibrosis. She underwent unilateral ureteric stenting followed by bilateral nephrostomy insertion and was commenced on corticosteroid therapy. Following re

INTRODUCTION: Urolithiasis is a common urological disorder with a high recurrence rate and increasing global burden. Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) is an established minimally invasive treatment for renal and upper ureteric calculi. The ureteral access sheath (UAS) facilitates repeated access, improves irrigation, reduces intrarenal pressure, and enhances procedural efficiency. However, successful UAS insertion remains technically challenging and may influence surgical outcomes. The present study aimed to evaluate demographic, anthropometric, anatomical, and stone-related predictors of s

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) can mimic pyogenic infection, inflammatory disease, and malignancy. We report the case of a middle-aged female patient who presented with low-grade fever, left hip pain, and left loin pain. Pelvic imaging demonstrated osteomyelitis with an abscess centered in the left femoral neck. An abscess was also present in the left obturator internus muscle. Further abdominal imaging demonstrated left hydronephrosis with a mid-ureteric stricture and retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy. Pus was aspirated and tested positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis, establishing the di

Cervical agenesis is an extremely rare congenital anomaly of the female reproductive tract characterized by normal fallopian tubes, an absent cervix, a functioning uterine body, and, occasionally, partial or total vaginal aplasia. It often presents with primary amenorrhea and cyclic pelvic pain. Delayed diagnosis can lead to severe morbidity from retrograde menstruation, including hematometra, hematosalpinx, and endometriosis. Patients with limited English proficiency (LEP), particularly Haitian women, face compounded systemic hurdles when navigating the healthcare system, significantly increa

Salt-losing crisis in the neonate is a life-threatening event manifested by hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, and metabolic acidosis. Whilst this biochemical finding is classically seen in congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), conditions of aldosterone action, such as pseudohypoaldosteronism (PHA), can also present with these findings but require different care. A four-week-old term male infant is described who was brought in with vomiting, lethargy, and anuria. At the time of admission, he was in shock with marked hyponatremia (119 mmol/L), life-threatening hyperkalemia (9.8 mmol/L), metabolic acid
