[High ureteral insertion as the cause of extreme hydronephrosis in a 5-year-old child with horseshoe kidney].

The incidence of horseshoe kidney is 1 per 400-800 live births. From 44-52% of the patients with horseshoe kidney have other coexisting abnormalities of the urinary tract, such as hydronephrosis, vesicoureteral reflux and a duplex collecting system. Our patient, a 5-year old boy, was admitted to a pediatric nephrology department because of abdominal pain and vomiting. He had ultrasonography of the abdomen performed for the first time at the age of 9-months and horseshoe kidney was shown. In a control ultrasonography, a mild dilatation of the pyelocalyceal system in the left kidney was describe

Associated anomalies and clinical outcome in children with ectopic kidney.

Urological anomalies can be seen in children with renal ectopia (RE) and can result in renal impairment. Therefore, we evaluated associated anomalies and renal outcome in our patients with RE. Sixty-eight children who were diagnosed with RE between January 2009-May 2014 were retrospectively studied. A total of 68 patients, 36 (52.9%) boys, with a median age of 67 months (4-201) and a median follow-up period of 14 months (3-113) were included in the study. Simple RE (S-RE) was found in 51 (75%) patients, of which 46 were unilateral and five were bilateral (discoid kidney). Crossed RE (C-RE) was

Transient Fanconi syndrome in two preterm infants with hydronephrosis and urinary tract infection.

Type IV renal tubular acidosis is known to occur in obstructive uropathy with urinary tract infection. Fanconi syndrome, however, has not been described in these settings. We report two preterm infants who developed Fanconi syndrome associated with hydronephrosis and urinary tract infection. Patient 1 is a boy with 21 trisomy, bilateral renal hypoplasia and bilateral vesicoureteral reflux delivered at 35 weeks' gestation. At postnatal day 42, he developed Fanconi syndrome after urinary tract infection, which persisted until the surgical correction of vesicoureteral reflux. Patient 2 was delive

Unilateral multicystic renal dysplasia: Prenatal diagnosis on ultrasound.

Multicystic renal dysplasia (MCRD) is the most common cause of abnormally enlarged kidney, diagnosed on antenatal ultrasound examination. It is an abnormality of the embryonic development in which the renal parenchyma is substituted by nonfunctioning renal tissue made up of cysts which do not communicate with each other. Vesicoureteric reflux (VUR), pelviureteric junction obstruction, vesicoureteric junction obstruction, and ureterocele are the most commonly seen abnormalities in contralateral kidney. Here, we report a case of prenatal diagnosis of unilateral MCRD with VUR in contralateral kid

Society for Fetal Urology Classification vs Urinary Tract Dilation Grading System for Prognostication in Prenatal Hydronephrosis: A Time to Resolution Analysis.

PURPOSE: The Urinary Tract Dilation grading system for prenatal hydronephrosis was introduced to address potential shortcomings of the Society for Fetal Urology classification. Hydronephrosis resolution is an important patient outcome and is frequently discussed during family counseling. We compared these 2 grading systems and their ability to predict time to hydronephrosis resolution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively screened 855 patients with prenatal hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic junction obstruction-like hydronephrosis, nonrefluxing primary megaureter or vesicoureteral reflux

Advances in ureteral stent development.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ureteral stents are commonly used in urology, but there is no perfect ureteral stent. This review documents developing ureteral technologies and strategies over the past 2 years. This area has some progressive advances in the foreseeable future. RECENT FINDINGS: Publications from 2014 and 2015 from a PubMed search with the words 'ureter' and 'stent' in the title were reviewed. Topics that affected patient symptoms from stents include selecting the proper length of stent, patient education regarding stent symptoms, and how the stent is removed. Stent extraction strings have

Pictorial review of orthotopic neobladder reconstruction: indication, normal postsurgical anatomy, and complications.

Radical cystectomy with urinary diversion is a common urological procedure performed for the treatment of bladder cancer. Numerous surgical procedures have been developed for urinary diversion. Over the past decade, orthotopic neobladder reconstruction has been used frequently for urinary diversion because of its advantageousness in providing patients with a good quality of life compared with other urinary diversion technique. Knowledge of the indication, surgical procedure, and postsurgical anatomy of orthotopic neobladder reconstruction is essential. While the technique has many advantages,

Evaluation of Mathisen's technique for ureteral reimplantation in children with primary vesicoureteral reflux.

INTRODUCTION: Although cross-trigonal ureteral reimplantation (Cohen) is a commonly used technique in children, it represents a non-physiological transfer of the ureteral orifices and may prove challenging with regard to endoscopic ureteral operations in later life. In 1964, Mathisen described an alternative method of ureteral reimplantation with lateralization of the neohiatus, creating an orthotopic course of the submucosal ureter. We have evaluated success and complication rates of both techniques that were applied sequentially at our departments. METHODS: Forty-eight consecutive patients

New congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract and outcomes in Robo2 mutant mice with the inserted piggyBac transposon.

BACKGROUND: Disruption of ROBO2 in humans causes vesicoureteral reflux (VUR)/congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT). PiggyBac (PB) is a DNA transposon, and its insertion often reduces-but does not eliminate-gene expression. The Robo2 insertion mutant exhibited non-dilating VUR, ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) not found in reported models. We studied the incidence and outcomes of VUR/CAKUT in this mutant and explored the relationship between Robo2 gene expression and the occurrence and severity of VUR/CAKUT. METHODS: The urinary systems of newborn mutants were e
