Natural antioxidant products and nanomaterial-based delivery systems for the amelioration of diabetic retinopathy: mechanisms, applications, and translational perspectives.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading global cause of vision loss, closely linked to hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and pathological angiogenesis. Natural antioxidants exhibit great therapeutic potential against DR but are severely limited by poor solubility, low bioavailability, and insufficient ocular delivery. This review systematically summarizes the classification, pharmacological mechanisms, and therapeutic values of natural antioxidants in DR, and highlights advances in nanotechnology-based delivery systems to improve efficacy and clinical translation. We

Adherent-invasive Escherichia coli pduB drives vitamin B12-dependent colitis in mice.

UNLABELLED: Adherent-invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) are strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease, but the virulence factors driving their invasive and pro-inflammatory behavior remain incompletely defined. Here, we demonstrate that vitamin B12 availability modulates pdu-dependent AIEC virulence. The 1,2-propanediol utilization (pdu) operon, which requires vitamin B12 as a cofactor, has previously been associated with bacterial virulence. Here, we validated this association and demonstrated its functional relevance in mouse models of colitis. Deletion of pduB, a structural c

Mechanisms of Serotonergic Modulation of Glial Cell Functions in the Recovery Period After Spinal Cord Injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to severe disability in patients, and one of the key obstacles to the recovery of lost functions is inefficient axonal remyelination. The high sensitivity of oligodendrocytes to secondary damage, the formation of a glial scar, and chronic neuroinflammation sustained by pro-inflammatory/neurotoxic microglia create a physical and chemical barrier to neuroplasticity processes. This review summarizes current knowledge on the ability of the serotonergic system to modulate the functional state of the main types of glial cells: oligodendrocytes, astrocytes, and microgli

Fresh frozen plasma pleurodesis for bronchopleural fistula following secondary spontaneous pneumothorax due to ruptured emphysematous bullae in a high-risk elderly COPD patient.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent air leak (PAL) secondary to bronchopleural fistula (BPF) is a serious complication of secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) resulting from ruptured emphysematous bullae in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Management is particularly challenging in elderly high-risk individuals who are unsuitable for surgical intervention. Fresh frozen plasma (FFP), containing fibrinogen and coagulation factors, may act as a biological sealant and facilitate pleural closure. CASE REPORT: A 76-year-old man, a former smoker with COPD and multiple comorbiditie

Could refeeding-associated gynaecomastia occur during recovery from anorexia nervosa? A hypothesis-generating review.

International andrology guidance discusses refeeding after starvation as a clinical setting associated with gynaecomastia, based on reports from starvation-refeeding settings outside anorexia nervosa (AN). A targeted search of PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar, last conducted on 27 July 2026, identified no indexed reports in male patients recovering from AN. We therefore advance the testable hypothesis that transient glandular breast tissue may occasionally occur but remain unrecognised during nutritional recovery; the available evidence does not establish occurrence, prevalence, or clinica

Preparation of a Thermosensitive Chitosan-Sea Cucumber Peptide Hydrogel and Its Alleviating Effect on Acute Alcohol-Induced Dual Liver and Brain Injury in Mice.

Excessive short-term ethanol intake often causes acute intoxication and multi-organ damage, especially to the liver and brain. Thus, developing safe and effective preparations for hangover relief, liver protection, and brain function regulation is of great practical significance. In this study, we fabricated a thermosensitive chitosan (CS)-sea cucumber peptide (SCP) hydrogel (CS-SCP gel) loaded with SCP using NaHCO3 as a crosslinker and characterized its properties. Kunming mouse models of anti-intoxication and acute alcohol-induced liver and brain injuries were established. The anti-intoxicat

Placental Extracellular Vesicles in Preeclampsia: Molecular Cargo, Pathophysiological Roles, and Emerging Diagnostic and Therapeutic Frontiers.

Preeclampsia (PE) affects 2%-8% of pregnancies globally and remains a leading cause of maternal and perinatal mortality. A central clinical gap is the absence of analytically and clinically validated non-invasive biomarkers capable of predicting PE before symptom onset. Current clinical tools, including angiogenic markers (sFlt-1/PlGF ratio) and first-trimester risk algorithms, have limitations that underscore the need for complementary approaches. Placental extracellular vesicles (EVs)-small particles released predominantly by syncytiotrophoblast cells-are implicated across PE pathophysiology

A gavage-fomite based method to generate mouse models with natural microbiota.

Laboratory-raised specific pathogen-free (SPF) mice have been indispensable for fundamental immunology research, yet their reliability in predicting human clinical outcomes has been questionable. A major factor contributing to this disconnect is the sanitized housing environment, which deprives laboratory mice of physiological microbial exposure critical for immune maturation. Various approaches have been developed to introduce microbes to SPF mice, aiming to mimic human-like microbial experiences and engender adult human-like immune traits. However, some of these methods, specifically the pet

Mathematical model development of type 2 diabetes mellitus considering insulin sensitivity and control of glucose using sliding mode approach.

A mathematical model of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is developed in this paper, by which the dynamics of the disease can be predicted with the aid of the related extracted ordinary differential equations. The important biological factors, including physical activities and insulin sensitivity, are considered in modeling the disease. Unlike previous models that mainly focused on type 1 diabetes or simplified Bergman-based approaches, the proposed model takes into account the complex dynamics of type 2 diabetes and enables the simultaneous regulation of glucose and insulin effectiveness using two co

The appetite for freediving differs between Sprague-Dawley and Long Evans rats.

Freediving in rats has emerged as a relevant model to study physiology and neural adaptation underlying submersion mechanisms. However, despite well-established strain-dependent differences in behavior and physiological responses, most studies about freediving rely on Sprague Dawley rats. As the choice of strain could significantly shape experimental results depending on the field of research, we conducted a behavioral comparative study between Long Evans (LE) rats, genetically closer to the Wild Norway rat, with the commonly used Sprague Dawley (SD) strain. We developed an 11-week progressive

Clinical and Pathological Findings in Coastal Birds Affected by Domoic Acid Toxicity.

In 2017, an unusually large number of live stranded and dead marine birds were found in California, coincident with a large bloom of the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia that produced the toxin domoic acid (DA). The most abundant bird species affected by this large die-off and stranding event were Pacific Loons (Gavia pacifica) and Red-throated Loons (Gavia stellata). International Bird Rescue (IBR; San Pedro, CA) received 117 live loons with suspected DA toxicosis. Many birds that survived the first few days in rehabilitation quickly re-attained suitable health metrics; however, 68 loons (58.1%) died

Protective role of lycopene against cyclophosphamide-induced endocrine dysfunction in rats.

OBJECTIVE: Aim: Infertility is the inability to conceive after one year of unprotected intercourse, influenced by various physiological and environmental factors, including chemical exposure. Cyclophosphamide, used for treating tumors and autoimmune diseases, is linked to reproductive toxicity and endocrine disruption via oxidative stress and cell damage in reproductive tissues. This study assesses the protective effect of lycopene, an antioxidant found in red fruits and vegetables, against cyclophosphamide-induced hormonal changes in rats. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: Materia

Superior cervical gangliectomy exacerbates the aortic dissection in mice.

BACKGROUND: Sympathetic innervation is fundamentally required for physiological aortic homeostasis. Though it plays a vital important role in aortic function, its specific role in aortic dissection (AD) remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, we explored the role of the sympathetic nervous system in AD by examining the effects of superior cervical ganglionectomy (SCGx) in mice. Using β-aminopropionitrile (BAPN) induced AD mice model at pre-lesional stage, the tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) expression, indicative of sympathetic activity, increased early in AD progression and correlated

Bioprinting the Craniofacial Region: A New Era in Regenerative Medicine and Dentistry.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) printing and bioprinting have emerged as transformative technologies in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Conventional 3D printing enables the fabrication of complex, customizable scaffolds that mimic the native extracellular matrix (ECM), providing mechanical support essential for cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. In contrast, 3D bioprinting integrates biomaterials, growth factors, and living cells into bioinks, allowing the precise layer-by-layer construction of tissue-like structures. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to highlight r

Enhanced CD33 CAR-NK cells secreting anti-CD73scFv overcome adenosine-mediated immunosuppression and improve anti-AML efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an aggressive hematologic malignancy with dismal outcomes, especially in relapsed/refractory settings. Chimeric antigen receptor natural killer (CAR-NK) cell therapy holds promise but is constrained by the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME), where adenosine-mediated suppression is a key barrier. OBJECTIVE: To develop a novel CAR-NK construct cotargeting AML cells and the adenosine-rich TME to enhance antileukemia efficacy. METHODS: Ex vivo expanded primary NK cells were used to compare the effects of CD39 versus CD73 blockade on NK cell

Mouse Model of Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn.

Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn (HDFN) is caused by the placental transfer of maternal red blood cell (RBC) alloantibodies into the fetal circulation which then targets paternally derived RBC antigens expressed on the fetal RBC. The resulting anemia in the fetus/newborn can lead to grave clinical consequences including hydrops fetalis, kernicterus, and perinatal demise. We have utilized the human KEL transgenic mouse model to study the induction of anti-KEL RBC alloantibodies through pregnancy as well as transfusion and the subsequent placental transfer of anti-KEL RBC alloantibodie

Multidomain Cardiorenal-Metabolic Abnormalities Despite HbA1c <7% in Type 2 Diabetes: A Real-World Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Contemporary management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) extends beyond glycemic control and requires comprehensive assessment of cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, and anthropometric factors. Nevertheless, clinical status is often summarized predominantly by glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), potentially overlooking concurrent non-glycemic abnormalities. This study evaluated the prevalence and coexistence of cardiorenal-metabolic abnormalities among patients with HbA1c <7.0% at six months. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included adults with T2DM routinely followed in
