Antimony (Sb) is a toxic metalloid and a global pollutant. Sb exposure is known to cause pulmonary, cardiovascular, liver and kidney damage, as well as cancer. In addition, data showing neurotoxic effects of Sb have been also obtained recently. Therefore, the objective of the present review was to discuss existing epidemiological findings linking Sb exposure to brain diseases and the underlying molecular mechanisms of Sb neurotoxicity. Laboratory findings revealed neurotoxic effects of high-dose Sb exposure. Specifically, in vitro and in vivo studies show that Sb induces neuronal apoptosis thr

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) are being increasingly integrated into biomedical and consumer products; however, their long-term safety is not fully understood. The liver and kidneys demonstrate an apparent susceptibility to the accumulation of Ag-NPs; however, the intensity and reversibility of the consequent toxicity necessitate further investigation. This study aimed to outline the hepatorenal toxic effects of orally administered Ag-NPs and to assess the potential for recovery through longitudinal biochemical, histopathological, and apoptotic assessments. Adult male albino rats were divided

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) poses a major public health challenge, resulting in substantial illness, death, and financial strain. The potential role of environmental factors, such as heavy metal (HM) exposure, in the exacerbation of the disease is increasingly recognized but not well understood. This study aims to shed light on the impact of HMs on the progression of CKD. METHODS: In this study, we examined nail clippings and plasma samples from 20 participants enrolled in the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC), a multi-center study designed to investigate risk factors for

Iron overload disrupts endocrine function and metabolic health, while iron chelation and phlebotomy enhance metabolic fitness in humans and mice. However, the working mechanism of iron-lowering strategies remains largely undefined, and it is unclear whether dietary iron restriction can serve as a new strategy to treat metabolic syndrome. Here we show that 20-ppm iron (i.e., iron moderately restricted) diet increased insulin sensitivity, adipose mitochondrial biogenesis, and energy expenditure compared to 50-ppm iron (i.e., iron adequate) diet in mice. By contrast, severe iron restriction (4-pp

Argulosis poses a major challenge to freshwater aquaculture, and the use of conventional chemotherapeutics is increasingly constrained by environmental and sustainability concerns. In this study, silver nanoparticles were synthesized using Azadirachta indica (neem) leaf extract and evaluated for their antiparasitic efficacy (AE) against Argulus siamensis infesting Labeo rohita. Neem leaf-synthesized silver nanoparticles (NL-AgNPs) showed a characteristic surface plasmon resonance peak (λ_max) at 420 nm and a zeta potential of -28 mV, indicating good stability. The nanoparticles were spherical

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common cancers in men and has an increasing incidence. In 1999, 37 000 men died from PCa in the USA. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) with GnRH agonists is frequently employed in the treatment of recurrent and metastatic PCa by inducing medical castration, rendering these men hypogonadal. Because hypogonadism in men is associated with a wide range of complications, we attempted to determine the effects of long-term ADT in men with PCa.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study at a tertiary care centre to determine the effect of ADT o

BACKGROUND: Chorein, the VPS13A gene product whose loss causes chorea-acanthocytosis (ChAc, VPS13A disease), has been implicated in ferroptosis-related vulnerability, but the organellar basis of this phenotype remains unclear. Using VPS13A knockdown (VPS13A-KD) human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells, we previously found that chorein reduction is associated with impaired ferrous iron (Fe(II)) efflux, increased lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) levels in the cytosolic fraction, and ferrostatin-1-suppressible cell death.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, we found t

PURPOSE: Resistance exercise (RE) has been shown to have a positive impact on cardiometabolic health, independent of moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). However, previous studies primarily used self-reported MVPA data, which are prone to bias. The aim of this study was to examine if the association between RE frequency and cardiometabolic health was independent of device-measured MVPA.
METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses were conducted using participants from the 1970 British Cohort Study. This included up to 4,881 participants (age 46-48) with outcome-specific analytical samples. RE fr

OBJECTIVE: Iron supplements are routinely administered for renal anemia in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, the association between cerebral iron overload and neuropsychiatric symptoms in this patient population remains elusive. This study aimed to investigate these associations and elucidate the potential protective effects and underlying mechanisms of L-Se-methylselenocysteine (L-SeMC).
METHODS: A human cohort comprised 23 iron-overloaded ESRD patients and 23 healthy controls (HCs), who underwent neuropsychological assessment and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QS

Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal that has a devastating impact on most organs, mainly the kidneys. This work aims to investigate the protective effects of Zn and P.amygdalus against cadmium induced renal toxicity in male albino rats. In the study, male albino rats were divided into five groups. The "Cd group" rats were treated with 50 mg/kg weekly dosing of CdCl₂ to induce toxicity, while the control group received normal water and food like bread. The other three groups received doses of Cd + Zn, Cd + P. amygdalus, and Cd + Zn + P. amygdalus, respectively through oral gavage needle. Zn was give

This report provides a review of the cadmium exposure situation in Sweden and updates the information on health risk assessment according to recent studies on the health effects of cadmium. The report focuses on the health effects of low cadmium doses and the identification of high-risk groups. The diet is the main source of cadmium exposure in the Swedish nonsmoking general population. The average daily dietary intake is about 15 micrograms/day, but there are great individual variations due to differences in energy intake and dietary habits. It has been shown that a high fiber diet and a diet

Cuproptosis, a recently identified form of regulated cell death, holds therapeutic promise in cancer. However, the mechanisms governing copper homeostasis and their impact on the immune landscape of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) remain poorly understood. A cuproptosis-related risk model was constructed to identify key prognostic factors. The role of ATP7B in ccRCC was validated using clinical cohorts, in vitro assays, and xenograft models. Mechanistic studies including Co-IP, ubiquitination assays, and Western blot were employed to elucidate the RNF186-p62-ATP7B axis. An autophagy-ta

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with an unclear etiology and a long preclinical phase. The multitude of challenges of studying this in humans highlight the need for robust preclinical animal models that accurately reflect the disease's preclinical progression. While traditional neurotoxin models fail to capture the slow, genetic nature of PD, genetic models, such as the phosphatase and tensin homolog-induced putative kinase 1 (Pink1-/-) knockout rat, offer a preclinical, translational approach. This review synthesizes the current understanding of the Pink1-/- ra

UNLABELLED: The aroma compositions and essential oil contents extracted from small cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum Maton) dried at three temperatures using a hot air convective dryer was studied by chromatographic methods. The major compounds in the dried samples were 1,8-cineole (7.23-11.76%) and α-Terpinyl acetate (61.65-68.19%) that were responsible for the specific aroma. The extracted essential oil was found to be majorly composed of alkenes (33-42%), alcohols (18-30%) and esters (18-22%) with acids, alkyls and ketones. The changes in esters and alcohols with drying time were more signific

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a persistent global health challenge, with an increasing incidence of cases and limitations in current treatment strategies. Traditional therapy involves long drug treatments that can cause side effects and lead to drug-resistant strains, making treatment less effective. This study aimed to explore the therapeutic potential of a novel nanoparticle-based delivery system for Thymol (THY), a natural antibacterial bioactive molecule, to combat Mycobacterium smegmatis, a model organism for Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
METHODS: A nanoparticle-based d
