The contribution of energy systems during 15-second sprint exercise in athletes of different sports specializations.

EBV infection causes mononucleosis and is associated with specific subsets of B cell lymphomas. Immunosuppressed patients such as organ transplant recipients are particularly susceptible to EBV-induced lymphoproliferative disease (LPD), which can be fatal. Leflunomide (a drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis) and its active metabolite teriflunomide (used to treat multiple sclerosis) inhibit de novo pyrimidine synthesis by targeting the cellular dihydroorotate dehydrogenase, thereby decreasing T cell proliferation. Leflunomide also inhibits the replication of cytomegalovirus and BK virus via

EBV-microRNAs as Potential Biomarkers in EBV-related Fever: A Narrative Review.

At present, timely and accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of Epstein- Barr Virus (EBV) infection-associated fever remain a difficult challenge. EBV encodes 44 mature microRNAs (miRNAs) that inhibit viral lysis, adjust inflammatory response, regulate cellular apoptosis, promote tumor genesis and metastasis, and regulate tumor cell metabolism. Herein, we have collected the specific expression data of EBV-miRNAs in EBV-related fevers, including infectious mononucleosis (IM), EBVassociated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH), chronic active EBV infection (CAEBV), and EBV-related t

Prevalence of malocclusions in children with infectious mononucleosis.

BACKGROUND: According to statistics 85% of children are carriers of Epstein-Barr virus, which is the cause of infectious mononucleosis. Many children with infectious mononucleosis have acute respiratory disease or sore throat flow due to weakened of the immune system. Children with infectious mononucleosis have manifestations of tonsillopharyngitis, adenoiditis. The long course of this pathology contributes to the development of dental caries, diseases of periodontal tissues, mucosa lesions of the oral cavity and malocclusions. The aim of the research was to study the prevalence and features o

Are corticosteroids safe in adolescent and adult patients with infectious mononucleosis? A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The use of systemic corticosteroids during Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-induced infectious mononucleosis is a controversial but widespread practice. We aimed to investigate the frequency of complications in adolescents and adults with infectious mononucleosis in relation to the use of corticosteroids. METHODS: We reviewed the clinical records of 396 patients admitted to the hospital with infectious mononucleosis (52.0% male; median age, 19 years; range, 15-87 years), with a focus on both short-term (infectious and non-infectious) and long-term (hematological malignancies) comp

Joint Flexibility and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome After Mononucleosis.

PURPOSE: Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a chronic disease characterized by substantial fatigue, postexertional malaise, unrefreshing sleep, and orthostatic intolerance, among other symptoms. Specific risk factors for the development of ME/CFS have not been adequately characterized. It has been suggested that ME/CFS is a connective tissue disorder and that joint hyperflexibility is a risk factor for the development of ME/CFS. METHODS: The goal of this study was to examine whether joint hyperflexibility is a risk factor for the development of ME/CFS after infecti

One-year follow-up of young people with ME/CFS following infectious mononucleosis by Epstein-Barr virus.

BACKGROUND: Infectious mononucleosis after primary infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV-IM) has been linked to the development of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue-syndrome (ME/CFS) in children, adolescents, and young adults. Here, we present clinical phenotypes and follow-up data from a first German cohort of young people with ME/CFS following EBV-IM. METHODS: 12 adolescents and 13 young adults were diagnosed with IM-triggered ME/CFS at our specialized tertiary outpatient service by clinical criteria requiring post-exertional malaise (PEM) and a history of confirmed EBV primary inf

Comparison of plasma proteomic profiles of patients with Epstein-Barr virus-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and infectious mononucleosis.

Primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection occasionally causes EBV-infectious mononucleosis (EBV-IM) and EBV-hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH). Although EBV-IM is mostly mild and self-limiting, EBV-HLH is a life-threatening disease characterized by excessive immune activation. However, the pathogenesis of EBV-HLH is yet to be fully elucidated. A diagnostic biomarker for EBV-HLH is desirable because early diagnosis and treatment are critical for the effective management of patients. In this study, the proteomic profiling of plasma was performed using liquid chromatography-mass spectr

Cold Agglutinin Syndrome and Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis: An Unusual Combination Caused by Epstein-Barr Virus Infection.

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) are rare complications of infectious mononucleosis. The authors describe a 12-year-old male with acute infectious mononucleosis, hepatitis, cholestasis, and an autoimmune hemolytic disorder caused by cold agglutinins IgM (anti-i specificity). Clinical deterioration with persistent fever, anemia, and hepatosplenomegaly was consistent with cold AIHA plus concomitant HLH. The patient was treated with corticosteroids and acyclovir, with an uneventful recovery. Although rare, cold agglutinin syndrome and HLH can complic

Epstein-Barr virus: the mastermind of immune chaos.

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous human pathogen linked to various diseases, including infectious mononucleosis and multiple types of cancer. To control and eliminate EBV, the host's immune system deploys its most potent defenses, including pattern recognition receptors, Natural Killer cells, CD8+ and CD4+ T cells, among others. The interaction between EBV and the human immune system is complex and multifaceted. EBV employs a variety of strategies to evade detection and elimination by both the innate and adaptive immune systems. This demonstrates EBV's mastery of navigating the comp

A case report of successful splenic artery embolization for atraumatic splenic rupture secondary to Epstein Barr virus infection in a haemodynamically unstable patient.

Splenic rupture in haemodynamically unstable patients has traditionally been managed with splenectomy. This case report discusses the successful management of atraumatic splenic rupture, a rare but life-threatening complication of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, in a hemodynamically unstable patient. The patient, diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis (IM) secondary to EBV, presented with severe abdominal pain and a syncopal episode. Imaging revealed an American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) grade III splenic injury, which was subsequently upgraded to a grade IV injury on r

Novel plasma microRNA expression features in diagnostic use for Epstein-Barr virus-associated febrile diseases.

BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is widely infected in humans and causes various diseases. Among them, microRNAs of EBV play a key role in the progression of EBV-associated febrile diseases. There're few specific indicators for rapid differential diagnosis of various febrile diseases associated with EBV, and the lack of more reliable screening methods with high diagnostic utility has led to spaces for improvement in the accurate diagnosis and efficient treatment of relevant patients, making EBV infection a complicated clinical problem. With recent advances in plasma microRNA testing, the a

Epstein-Barr virus gp42 antibodies reveal sites of vulnerability for receptor binding and fusion to B cells.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) causes infectious mononucleosis and is associated with B cell lymphomas. EBV glycoprotein 42 (gp42) binds HLA class II and activates membrane fusion with B cells. We isolated gp42-specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), A10 and 4C12, which use distinct mechanisms to neutralize virus infection. mAb A10 was more potent than the only known neutralizing gp42 mAb, F-2-1, in neutralizing EBV infection and blocking binding to HLA class II. mAb 4C12 was similar to mAb A10 in inhibiting glycoprotein-mediated B cell fusion but did not block receptor binding, and it was less effec

Raman spectroscopy of lymphocytes from patients with the Epstein-Barr virus infection.

In this study, Raman spectroscopy is applied to trace lymphocytes activation following contact with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) of the herpesvirus family. The biomarker of cell activation is found to be the 520 cm-1 band, indicating formation of immunoglobulins. The blood samples are obtained from patients diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis and treated at the University Hospital in Kraków. The lymphocytes' Raman spectra are collected using a mapping technique, exciting samples with a 514.5 nm line of Ar + laser. Measurements are performed on the 1st, 4th, 6th, 12th and 30th day of hospit

Role of IL-27 in Epstein-Barr virus infection revealed by IL-27RA deficiency.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection can engender severe B cell lymphoproliferative diseases1,2. The primary infection is often asymptomatic or causes infectious mononucleosis (IM), a self-limiting lymphoproliferative disorder3. Selective vulnerability to EBV has been reported in association with inherited mutations impairing T cell immunity to EBV4. Here we report biallelic loss-of-function variants in IL27RA that underlie an acute and severe primary EBV infection with a nevertheless favourable outcome requiring a minimal treatment. One mutant allele (rs201107107) was enriched in the Finnish po

Risk of multiple sclerosis in individuals with infectious mononucleosis: a national population-based cohort study using hospital records in England, 2003-2023.

BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is thought to be a necessary causative agent in the development of multiple sclerosis (MS). Infectious mononucleosis (IM), which occurs up to 70% of adolescents and young adults with primary EBV infection, appears to be a further risk factor but few studies have been highly powered enough to explore this association by time since IM diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to quantify the risk of MS in individuals with IM compared with the general population, with particular focus on time since IM diagnosis. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study usin
