Cold agglutinins with specificity to I or to i antigens of humanadult or cord-blood erythrocytes produced during the course of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection and infectious mononucleosis contain light chains of K and L types. However, cold agglutinin isolated from the serums of patients with chronic cold-agglutinin hemolytic anemia contains only type K light chains. The experimental evidence suggests that some cold agglutinins contain both types of light chains in the same molecule.

The formation of immunoglobulins by circulating lymphocytes was studied by three techniques: (1) Autoradiographic analysis of the immunoglobulins synthesized during the incubation of cell suspensions in a medium with radioactive amino acids; (2) direct immunofluorescent staining; and (3) examination of the cellular morphology. Lymphocytes of the normal peripheral blood were found to synthesize a distinct amount of IgG and smaller amounts of IgA and IgM. Cells of the thoracic-duct lymph synthesized distinct amounts of all three immunoglobulins. A similar pattern was found in infectious mononucl

A screening test for infectious mononucleosis is described, based on the fact that antibodies against sheep red cells remaining after absorption of the serum by papain-treated sheep red cells appear to be specific for the disease. The test appears to be more useful in diagnosis than classical absorption techniques and has the advantage of being specific while maintaining a high degree of sensitivity.

Heparinized blood specimens obtained from two patients in the acute phase of infectious mononucleosis and from a healthy technician were injected intravenously into rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) and the animals were observed for three weeks to one month for clinical, hematological and serological signs of infectious mononucleosis.Splenomegaly was the only definite clinical finding after 12 and 16 days, respectively. There were no definite hematological changes. At autopsy, hyperplasia of the germinal centres of lymphoid follicles, occasional foci of lymphocytic infiltration in the red pulp, a
