Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a gammaherpesvirus, associated with infectious mononucleosis and various types of malignancy. We focused here on the BDLF4 gene of EBV and identified it as a lytic gene, expressed with early kinetics. Viral late gene expression of the BDLF4 knockout strain was severely restricted; this could be restored by an exogenous supply of BDLF4. These results indicate that BDLF4 is important for the EBV lytic replication cycle, especially in late gene expression.

We herein report the case of a 14-year-old girl with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infectious mononucleosis who developed prolonged hepatitis and jaundice. At presentation, she had tender hepatomegaly with a markedly deranged liver function test. Abdominal ultrasonography showed hepatomegaly and a thickened gallbladder wall. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is an inflammatory disorder arising from defects in critical regulatory pathways responsible for termination of inflammatory response. We are presenting a case report of a 20-year-old male, admitted to the Department of Neurology because of left lower limb weakness and balance disturbances. After a few days of hospitalization, fever occurred. Laboratory tests revealed anemia, neutropenia, lymphopenia, and thrombocytopenia.
