BACKGROUND: Primary EBV infection mainly affects children and young adults. Most patients present the characteristic triad of fever, pharyngitis and lymphadenopathy. Symptoms may include a morbilliform eruption, occasionally induced by amoxicillin. We report a case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome concurrent with EBV infection.
CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old boy consulted for an eruption suggestive of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which was supported by the histopathology results. The patient had taken no medication during the previous weeks. Laboratory examinations showed atypical activated T lymphocytes

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most ubiquitous member of the herpes virus family and is the leading cause of congenital (vertical) infection in newborns (Fowler, Stagno, & Pass, 2003; Llorente, Steigmeyer, Cooper, Rivers, & Gazley, 2011; Noyola et al., 2000; Steigmeyer & Llorente, 2010). CMV is related to the group of viruses capable of causing more pernicious infectious diseases, such as chicken pox (Santos de Barona, 1998). Although the virus generally remains dormant, individuals whose symptoms are clinically apparent often are dramatically affected. Common symptomatic characteristics of the

The Epstein-Barr virus early antigen (EBV EA) complex consists of multiple proteins with potential significance for diagnosis of EBV-related diseases. In many individuals, detection of antibody to the early antigen (EA) is a sign of active infection, but 20% of healthy people may have this antibody for years. We studied the role of EA immunoglobulin G (IgG) in individuals with atypical antibody responses in the diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis (IM) and in EBV-infected transplant patients. EA IgG was present in 72% of confirmed IM patients. A trend was observed between high viral loads and

AIM: Systematic reviews (SRs) are an important tool for the synthesis of research and are used to guide both research and clinical practice. Previous research suggests that changes to standard SR methodology may be warranted. The objectives of this study were to determine the value of adding Chinese-language databases to conventional systematic review (SR) search strategies, and ii) to determine the importance of methodological validation of TCM RCTs in the conduct of SRs of two health conditions, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and EBV-infectious mononucleosis (mono).

Systemic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive T-cell lymphoproliferative disease (LPD) of childhood is an extremely rare and distinct clinicopathological entity. The majority of these cases occur with an apparent primary EBV infection. In this study, we describe a case of systemic EBV-positive T-cell LPD of childhood in a 23-year-old female with primary EBV infection, and review the clinicopathological features of this disease. A 23-year-old previously healthy female without an immunocompromized status presented with an acute onset of high fever. Laboratory examinations revealed a markedly elevat

CASE REPORT: A case of Alice in Wonderland syndrome is described as the only sign of Epstein-Barr virus infection.
DISCUSSION: Epstein-Barr virus infection may include visual symptoms as the first or only signs of disease. All patients presenting with a clinical picture consistent with the Alice in Wonderland syndrome should undergo serological testing for Epstein-Barr virus infection.

BACKGROUND: Although splenomegaly is a common finding in Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, splenic infarction is rarely reported and may be under-recognised, especially in adults. Neurological complications such as aseptic meningitis are also uncommon but documented. The simultaneous occurrence of both complications in the context of primary EBV infection is exceptional.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the case of a 56-year-old previously healthy man who presented with fever and abdominal pain. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed splenomegaly and multiple wedge-shaped splenic infarcts

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a member of the herpes family of viruses and is very common in humans. EBV is most often associated with infectious mononucleosis. However, it is estimated that 1% of tumors including lymphoproliferative, epithelial and mesenchymal are linked to EBV infection. EBV has a tropism for certain epithelial cells, lymphocytes and myocytes. Like other herpesviruses, EBV has both lytic and latent phases of infection. In the latent form, EBV-encoded genes ensure the survival of the viral genome, allowing it to circumvent the host's immune surveillance by limited expressio

Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is one of the representative, usually benign, acute diseases associated with primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. IM is generally self-limiting and is characterized mostly by transient fever, lymphadenopathy and hepatosplenomegaly. However, very rarely primary EBV infection results in severe or fatal conditions such as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis together with fulminant hepatitis designated as severe or fatal IM or EBV-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis alone. In addition, chronic EBV-associated diseases include Burkitt's lymphoma, undiffe

BACKGROUND: Abnormal liver blood tests are common in Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, but symptomatic hepatitis is rare. The demographics, clinical features and outcome of EBV hepatitis are incompletely understood, particularly in the elderly people.
AIM: To identify the demographics, presenting features and natural history of EBV hepatitis.
METHODS: Retrospective review of 1995 consecutive patients attending the jaundice hotline clinic over a 13-year period. Data collected included demographic information, presenting features, clinical and laboratory parameters, radiology imaging and cli

Chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection (CAEBV) presents with chronic or recurrent infectious mononucleosis-like symptoms, such as low-grade fever, liver dysfunction, lymphadenopathy, and hepatosplenomegaly. Immunological methods are useful for the diagnosis of viral infections. However, CAEBV patients do not necessarily have high titers of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-specific antibodies. Hosts that are immunocompromised after hematopoietic stem cell transplantations sometimes suffer from systemic EBV-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH) and EBV-positive lymphoma. Patients

BACKGROUND: We assessed the morbidity of herpesviruses in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) enrolled in immunosuppressive treatment studies.
METHODS: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), and varicella zoster virus (VZV) infections were monitored in 126 participants of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of daclizumab (DZB) and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) including DZB(+)MMF(+), DZB(-)MMF(+), DZB(+)MMF(-), and DZB(-)MMF(-). During the 2-year follow-up, herpesviral infections were monitored clinically, by serology and blood DNA

BACKGROUND: Expatriates are a distinct population at unique risk for health problems related to their travel exposure.
METHODS: We analyzed GeoSentinel data comparing ill returned expatriates with other travelers for demographics, travel characteristics, and proportionate morbidity (PM) for travel-related illness.
RESULTS: Our study included 2,883 expatriates and 11,910 non-expatriates who visited GeoSentinel clinics ill after travel. Expatriates were more likely to be male, do volunteer work, be long-stay travelers (>6 months), and have sought pre-travel advice. Compared to non-expatriates,

Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is a clinical syndrome most often attributable to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Characteristic clinical features of EBV IM include bilateral upper lid edema, exudative or nonexudative pharyngitis, bilateral posterior cervical adenopathy, and splenomegaly ± maculopapular rash. Laboratory features of EBV IM include atypical lymphocytes and elevated levels of serum transaminases. Leukopenia and thrombocytopenia are not uncommon. The syndrome of IM may also be attributable to other infectious diseases, eg, cytomegalovirus (CMV), human herpes virus-6 (HHV-6), or Toxoplasma

Lymph node reactive hyperplasia, caused by specific infectious etiologic factors, represents the most frequent cause of enlarged peripheral lymph nodes. The main infectious agents are viruses, pyogenic bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi and protozoa that may determine unspecific or specific pathological entities, such as cat-scratch disease, toxoplasmosis or infectious mononucleosis. Lymph node fine needle cytology (FNC) is a safe, simple, cost-effective and efficient technique that quickly provides information about the cell population and the nature of the process. FNC can also provide suitable m

While landmark studies have shown that microbiota activate and educate host immunity, how immune systems shape microbiomes and contribute to disease is incompletely characterized. Primary immunodeficiency (PID) patients suffer recurrent microbial infections, providing a unique opportunity to address this issue. To investigate the potential influence of host immunity on the skin microbiome, we examined skin microbiomes in patients with rare monogenic PIDs: hyper-IgE (STAT3-deficient), Wiskott-Aldrich, and dedicator of cytokinesis 8 syndromes. While specific immunologic defects differ, a shared
