Liquid biopsy cell analysis and ex vivo culture as effective methods of therapeutic indexing of metastasis in B[a]P-induced lung cancer mice for an active targeted quercetin therapy.

UNLABELLED: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a human herpes virus with a worldwide seroprevalence of 60-100%, mainly known to cause severe life-threatening disease in immunocompromised patients. In immunocompetent hosts (IMCh), CMV causes a self-limiting mononucleosis-like infection, and severe pictures are less recognized. We report a case of a previously healthy 62-year-old woman evaluated in the Internal Medicine outpatient clinic for 3 weeks of progressive fatigue, generalised inflammatory arthralgias, hypogastric discomfort and daily persistent fever. On first examination, paleness and hepatomega

Acute hepatitis with synchronous acalculous cholecystitis and pancreatitis in a patient with Epstein-Barr viral infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus infection is common. However, to our knowledge, it has never been reported to cause synchronous acute acalculous cholecystitis and acute pancreatitis alongside hepatitis. This case highly suggests the potential for novel multiorgan involvement. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old Asian male patient presented with high-grade fever, abdominal pain, and jaundice. Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation confirmed acute hepatitis, acute acalculous cholecystitis, and acute pancreatitis. Histopathological examination of lymph node and liver biopsy specimens identified Epstein

Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Hepatitis Treated With N-Acetylcysteine: Placebo Versus True Effect.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a herpesvirus that is known to cause multiple conditions, ranging from malignancies like Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphomas to infectious and autoimmune conditions like infectious mononucleosis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Infectious mononucleosis causes systemic symptoms including cervical lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, malaise, myalgias, and fever. While the spleen and liver are involved in some cases, most cases result in mild elevation of transaminases, not exceeding two to three times the upper normal limit. The transaminitis is usually subclinical with a s

Acute Respiratory Failure due to Pulmonary Toxoplasmosis in an Immunocompetent Patient: A Case Report.

Pulmonary toxoplasmosis is a rare but potentially life-threatening manifestation of Toxoplasma gondii infection in immunocompetent individuals. Clinical presentation is often nonspecific and may mimic viral or atypical pneumonia, leading to delayed diagnosis. We report the case of a previously healthy 32-year-old man who presented with a mononucleosis-like syndrome complicated by rapidly progressive hypoxemic respiratory failure requiring invasive mechanical ventilation. Initial evaluation revealed marked systemic inflammation, cytopenias, hyperferritinemia, and mixed-pattern hepatitis. Chest

Airway infection with murine γ-herpesvirus 68 triggers gut-to-liver bacterial translocation via increased intestinal permeability.

Primary infection by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) often causes infectious mononucleosis (IM), which is frequently accompanied by acute hepatitis despite the absence of direct EBV infection of hepatocytes. Our previous studies using murine γ-herpesvirus 68 (MHV68), a murine model of EBV, demonstrated that intestinal bacteria contribute to hepatitis induced by MHV68 airway infection, although the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In the present study, we investigated the effect of MHV68 airway infection on intestinal barrier function. C57BL/6 mice were intratracheally inoculated with MHV68. Inte

Viral infection and dementia risk: A systematic bidirectional Mendelian randomization analysis.

BACKGROUND: Viral infections have attracted increasing interest as potentially alterable risk factors for dementia; nonetheless, the results from observational research are variable and prone to confounding bias and reverse causation. This work seeks to systematically explore the potential causal associations between several viral infections and various forms of dementia by a Mendelian randomization methodology utilizing summary statistics and extensive genomic data from the Finnish FinnGen R12 database. METHODS: This study initially included 14 viral infections, including anogenital herpes,

Bilateral Facial Palsy and Epstein-Barr Infection in Children: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral facial nerve palsy (BFNP) is a rare clinical entity in children and is more often associated with systemic or infectious diseases than unilateral facial palsy. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is an uncommon but recognized cause of facial nerve palsy and may present with bilateral involvement. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 3-year-old boy who presented with progressive bilateral facial weakness following a febrile illness with pharyngitis and cervical lymphadenopathy. Neurological examination revealed complete bilateral facial paralysis (House-Brackmann gra

Cold agglutinin syndrome secondary to Epstein-Barr virus reactivation during corticosteroid therapy for minimal change nephrotic syndrome in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a member of the herpesvirus family, establishes lifelong latency following primary infection and may be reactivated under conditions of immunosuppression. EBV reactivation is classically associated with infectious mononucleosis and Burkitt lymphoma and rarely associated with cold agglutinin syndrome. Here, we describe a case of minimal change nephrotic syndrome complicated by cold agglutinin syndrome secondary to EBV reactivation in the setting of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and corticosteroid-induced immunosuppression. Indicator condition-guided HIV testing in patients with mononucleosis-like illness and community-acquired pneumonia in an Emergency Department setting: A prospective study from Poland (2015-2018).

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in HIV care, late diagnosis remains a major public health challenge in Europe, with nearly half of HIV diagnoses in the EU/EEA occurring at a late stage. In Poland, a substantial proportion of people living with HIV remain undiagnosed. Indicator condition-guided testing has been proposed as an effective strategy to reduce missed opportunities for earlier diagnosis. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted at the Emergency Department of the Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Warsaw, Poland, between May 2015 and March 2018, as part of the European OptTEST

Infectious mononucleosis mimicking Fitz-Hugh-Curtis Syndrome: The diagnostic complexity of concurrent Chlamydia trachomatis infection and false-positive syphilis serology.

Infectious mononucleosis (IM), typically caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, presents with a wide range of clinical manifestations. This diversity includes rare organ complications and the potential for false-positive syphilis serology results, making the diagnosis challenging. We report a rare and instructive case of IM presenting as acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC). This case was complicated by concurrent false-positive syphilis serology results, prompting strong clinical suspicion for Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome (FHCS). A 21-year-old woman presented with fever, right upper quadrant pain, an

Clinicopathologic Analysis of 34 Japanese Patients With EBV-Associated Reactive Lymphoid Hyperplasias.

The 5th edition of the WHO classification of haematolymphoid tumours introduces the concept of hyperplasias arising in immune deficiency and dysregulation (IDD), which are frequently associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). These lesions can be histologically classified as follicular hyperplasia (FH), infectious mononucleosis-like hyperplasia (IMH), or plasmacytic hyperplasia. Although EBV-associated reactive lymphoid hyperplasia (EBV-RLH) has been recognized in various IDD settings, comprehensive clinicopathologic analyses remain limited. We analyzed 34 Japanese patients with EBV-RLH. The ID

Surgical treatment of pulmonary hydatidosis: six years of experience and results at the National Hospital Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen, Lima, Peru.

Liposomal amphotericin B (AmBisome) is a lipid-associated formulation of the broad-spectrum polyene antifungal agent amphotericin B. It is active against clinically relevant yeasts and moulds, including Candida spp., Aspergillus spp. and filamentous moulds such as Zygomycetes, and is approved for the treatment of invasive fungal infections in many countries worldwide. It was developed to improve the tolerability profile of amphotericin B deoxycholate, which was for many decades considered the gold standard of antifungal treatment, despite being associated with infusion-related events and nephr

CHCHD2 as a prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target in lung adenocarcinoma: Insights from pan‑cancer multi‑omics and functional studies.

Helminths include both parasitic nematodes (roundworms) and platyhelminths (trematode and cestode flatworms) that are abundant, and are of clinical importance. The genetic characterization of parasitic flatworms using advanced molecular tools is central to the diagnosis and control of infections. Although the nuclear genome houses suitable genetic markers (e.g., in ribosomal (r) DNA) for species identification and molecular characterization, the mitochondrial (mt) genome consistently provides a rich source of novel markers for informative systematics and epidemiological studies. Epstein-Barr virus infection increases the risk for inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) plays a role in the etiology of Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis. We investigated whether a history of infectious mononucleosis, a well-known marker of early EBV exposure, is also associated with these diagnoses. METHODS: In case-control studies, we examined the concurrence of infectious mononucleosis, Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple sclerosis, SLE, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis in the same patients, using the University

Epstein-Barr Virus Infection at Single-Cell Resolution.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection has been studied at single-cell resolution for six decades and counting. Such investigations can reveal virus-host interactions and their dependence on viral strain, cellular niche, infection program, immune response regulation, and time. Understanding these factors is paramount to treating EBV-associated cancers and autoimmune diseases. This review examines the state of the field in EBV single-cell and spatial-omics spanning experimental models and clinical samples. Topics of primary interest include the growing adoption and emerging biological themes from s
