BACKGROUND: Patients diagnosed with renal and perinephric abscesses (RPA) frequently experience acute kidney injury (AKI), which is associated with poor clinical outcomes. However, large-scale, nationwide studies examining factors associated with AKI in this patient population are lacking.
OBJECTIVES: The current research aimed to identify factors associated with AKI in patients with RPA.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data obtained from the National Inpatient Sample database spanning January 1, 2016, through December 31, 2022. The primary outcome assessed was the

Citrobacter species are anaerobic gram-negative bacteria that are known to cause infections in immunocompromised hosts, particularly in hospital settings. Their opportunistic nature and tendency to develop antibiotic resistance make Citrobacter species challenging to treat. Renal or perinephric abscess formation as a result of Citrobacter infection is uncommon, having only previously been reported in four cases. We present a case of a 70-year-old man with diabetes and prostate cancer who was diagnosed with an 18 cm perinephric and a 10 cm perihepatic abscess caused by Citrobacter koseri. The p

We report the first case of a 52-year-old nondiabetic male admitted for management of uremic syndrome associated with emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN), renal and perinephric abscess, and emphysematous cystitis (EC) on a single functional kidney with a large abundance of spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SP) complicating a SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. The patient has benefited from several dialysis sessions, intravenous antibiotics, and percutaneous drainage. His clinical course was complicated by acute respiratory distress syndrome, and unfortunately, he died nine days following admission.

This nationwide study aimed to provide risk estimates for a panel of infections subsequent to pyogenic liver abscesses (PLA) in Taiwan. In this study, we selected 12 050 patients diagnosed with PLA as our study cohort and 60 250 non-PLA patients as our comparison cohort. We individually tracked each subject for a 1-year period beginning with their index date to identify those who were subsequently diagnosed with any of the following infections: pneumonia, endophthalmitis, septic pulmonary embolism, pulmonary abscess, pleural empyema, meningitis, abscess of prostate, renal and perinephric absce

BACKGROUND: This study was carried out to assess the spectrum of renal and perinephric space infection among urology patients admitted in the last three years.
METHODS: Medical records of patients with renal and perinephric abscess and emphysematous pyelonephritis were reviewed.
RESULTS: Out of 2278 patients admitted in last three years, 29 (1.2%) patients suffered from renal and perinephric space infection, 13 (45%) patients had renal abscess, 11 (38%) perinephric abscess and five (17%) emphysematous pyelonephritis. Sixteen (55%) patients recovered conservatively, nine (31%) patients requir

This population-based cohort study aimed to investigate the incidence and relative hazard of renal and perinephric abscess (RA) in the diabetic population in Taiwan. More than a half million diabetic patients and sex- and age-matched controls were identified from the 1997 Taiwan National Health Insurance data and were linked to in-patient claims from 1997 to 2007. Person-year approach with Poisson assumption was used to estimate the incidence density (ID) of RA. The hazard ratios (HRs) of hospitalization due to RA in relation to diabetes were analysed using a Cox proportional hazard model. The

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diagnosis of renal or perinephric abscess is still a challenge for physicians. This study investigated the effect of location and size of abscess and the time of diagnosis on treatment outcomes.
METHODS: This retrospective analysis enrolled 159 adult patients with renal, perinephric or mixed-type (renal plus perinephric) abscess hospitalized between June 2001 and June 2006. The outcomes of these patients were classified into "poor" and "success" in order to elucidate associated risk factors. 106 patients had clear information of the timing of diagnosis and were categor

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to describe the last 10 years' experience of the diagnosis and treatment of renal, perinephric, and mixed abscesses in an academic reference center.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records of 65 patients with renal, perinephric, and mixed abscesses treated at our hospital from January 1992 to December 2002 were reviewed. The data collected included predisposing factors, symptoms, physical examination, initial diagnosis, laboratory and radiologic evaluation, treatment, and clinical outcome.
RESULTS: Perinephric abscesses were found in 33 (50.8%) patients, renal

Renal infection, including acute and chronic pyelonephritis, focal bacterial nephritis, renal and perinephric abscess, pyonephrosis and others, represents a spectrum of interrelated conditions. In recent years, computed tomography, ultrasound, nuclear scintigraphy, excretory urography (IVP) and magnetic resonance imaging have offered varying degrees of utility in evaluating renal infection. Although imaging in acute pyelonephritis has been extensively studied, this condition is a rare initial presentation as a renal cystic feature. This investigation presents a case of acute pyelonephritis, wi

Renal and perinephric abscess in children are uncommon. Three basic pathophysiologic mechanisms are involved, namely, hematogenous spread, ascending infection and contamination by proximity to an infected area. Six pediatric patients diagnosed with renal abscess were treated at our institution from 1990-2000. Five patients were females; ages ranged from 3-17 years (mean 11.8 years). Diagnosis, as expected, was not readily apparent at presentation. Computerized tomography and renal sonograms were the most useful imaging modalities. Gram-negative bacteria were commonly isolated; only one patient

AIM: A retrospective study of our experience of CT evaluation and follow-up of 16 solitary and multiple renal abscesses treated successfully with antibiotics alone and evaluated with CT at the onset of symptoms and after therapy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven patients had a solitary renal abscess, five had multiple renal abscesses and four had renal and perinephric abscess. None of the abscesses were larger than 5 cm.
RESULTS: In all 16 patients, the CT examination showed total renal and extrarenal regression of the abscesses. In four patients, scarring of the renal outline was observed on fo

Computed tomography and ultrasonography are effective methods for diagnosis and localization of renal and perinephric abscesses. In patients with clinical suspicion of sepsis, diagnostic needle aspiration of these lesions can be safely performed extraperitoneally by using sectional imaging for guidance. When an abscess is confirmed, small catheters can be introduced percutaneously via the diagnostic aspiration route to provide immediate decompression as well as continuous and definitive drainage without need for surgery. In 8 cases so treated, there were no major complications, deaths, or recu
