Up to 50% of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients world-wide develop lupus nephritis (LN). In low to middle income countries and in particular in sub-Saharan Africa, where SLE is prevalent with a more aggressive course, LN and end stage renal disease is a major cause of mortality. While developed countries have the funding to invest in SLE and LN research, patients of African descent are often underrepresented in clinical trials. Thus, the complex influence of ethnicity and genetic background on outcome of LN and SLE as a whole, is not fully understood. Several pathophysiological mechan

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multifactorial chronic inflammatory autoimmune connective tissue disease. Lupus nephritis (LN) is a common and serious complication of SLE which can progress to end-stage renal disease. Renal biopsy is the gold standard in the diagnosis and classification of LN, but since it is an invasive procedure, it is neither desirable nor applicable for all cases. This has led to the search for an alternative, noninvasive, site-specific, and immune process-related biomarkers. Uromodulin (Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein) is the most abundant urinary protein expressed exc

UNLABELLED: Recent studies have shown a high risk of chronic kidney disease and associated cardiovascular complications in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which determines the prognosis. However, the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in RA has not been established in the Russians.
AIM: Study was to examine the prevalence, risk factors and histological variants of CKD in RA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 180 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were observed in the Tareev clinic of nephrology, for the period from 2014 to 2019 years. Age, gender, duration of RA, drug therapy, ESR, CRP

Primary Sjögren syndrome is an autoimmune disorder characterized by lymphoplasmacytic infiltration of the exocrine (salivary and lachrymal) glands resulting in sicca symptoms (dryness). Systemic complications can occur in primary Sjögren syndrome, but renal involvement is rare, affecting<10% patients. The most frequent form of nephropathy in primary Sjögren syndrome is tubulointerstitial nephritis, where infiltration of the kidney by plasma cells is a key feature and shows similarity to the lymphoplasmacytic infiltration of the salivary glands. Electrolyte disturbances may occur in primary Sjö

Research on autoimmune processes involved in glomerulonephritis has been for years based on experimental models. Recent progress in proteomics has radically modified perspectives: laser microdissection and proteomics were crucial for an in vivo analysis of autoantibodies eluted from human biopsies. Lupus nephritis has been the subject of recent independent researches. Main topics have been the definition of renal autoimmune components in human lupus biopsies; methods were laser capture of glomeruli and/or of single cells (CD38+ or Ki-67+) from tubulointerstitial areas as starting step followed

Systemic lupus erythematosus is characterized by a breakdown of self-tolerance and production of autoantibodies. Kidney involvement (i.e., lupus nephritis) is both common and severe and can result in permanent damage within the glomerular, vascular, and tubulo-interstitial compartments of the kidney, leading to acute or chronic renal failure. Accumulating evidence shows that anti-dsDNA antibodies play a critical role in the pathogenesis of lupus nephritis through their binding to cell surface proteins of resident kidney cells, thereby triggering the downstream activation of signaling pathways

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease involving several organs. SLE patients developing lupus nephritis (LN) frequently have the worst outcome. Recent data have shown that dendritic cells (DCs) may have a central role in SLE pathogenesis directing the immune response against auto-antigens. In this study we describe a reduction in circulating BDCA1+ and BDCA3+ myeloid DCs, and BDCA2+ plasmacytoid DCs in patients with active LN compared to those in the remission state. Analysis of LN biopsies revealed a strong tubulo-interstitial infiltrate of BDCA1+, BDCA3+ and BDCA4+ DCs

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune connective tissue disease marked by immune-complex mediated lesions in small blood vessels of various organs, especially the kidneys, although other factors may also be implicated in the pathogenesis of the disease. This article focuses on the role of lipids in the progression of glomerular, vascular and tubulo-interstitial lesions in two patients with lupus nephritis associated with pronounced hyper- and dyslipidemia. The pathogenesis of progressive glomerulosclerosis in both patients appears to be multifactorial. In addition to immune compl

Renal damage is not uncommon in rheumatoid arthritis, but the causative role of the disease per se is not well defined yet. In this paper the updated literature data are reported and our own experience as well. In particular, we describe renal syndromes associated with non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs, remission-inducing agents (gold and penicillamine) and cytotoxic drugs, secondary amyloidosis, systemic rheumatoid vasculitis, glomerular and tubulo-interstitial nephritis not related to drug therapy.

Renal involvement during Still's disease in the adult is rarely mentioned in the literature. Proteinuria and hematuria are frequently reported during systemic involvement in the disease but, conversely, observations including an anatomical account of the kidney are rare: amyloidosis is mentioned the most often (5 compatible cases), while other cases are more disparate: non specific glomerulitis (4 cases), glomerulonephritis with mesangial deposition of IgA (2 cases), tubulo-interstitial nephritis; these different non specific aspects may correspond to an immune complex disease. The apparent ra

The clinical course of a woman with systemic lupus erythematosus demonstrated that renal involvement in this disease can change, both in the predominant site of renal injury and in the pattern of glomerular lesions. Over 50 months she had first tubulo-interstitial lupus nephritis with no glomerular change, then a membranous nephropathy with disappearance of tubulo-interstitial inflammation, and finally crescentic glomerulonephritis. This case emphasizes the need for close follow-up of all lupus patients regardless of their initial renal manifestations and pathology.

To test the hypothesis that immune complex deposition can mediate tubulo-interstitial damage in lupus nephritis, a correlative immunofluorescent (IF) and morphometric study of 43 renal biopsies from 39 patients with diffuse proliferative lupus glomerulonephritis was done. The point-counting method was used to determine the percentage of the cortical tubulo-interstitial system occupied by the mononuclear cell infiltrates (infiltrate index) and by the interstititum (interstitial index). The estimated amount of deposits containing immunoglobulin along tubular basement membranes and within the int
