Long-term mortality and risk of chronic kidney disease in children following severe malaria complicated by acute kidney injury: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric acute kidney injury (AKI) is a complication of severe malaria, but its long-term outcomes remain poorly defined in low-income and middle-income countries. We aimed to evaluate the long-term association between paediatric AKI and kidney outcomes and mortality following severe malaria. METHODS: We pooled data from two prospective cohorts of Ugandan children (ie, those aged 6 months-12 years) admitted to hospital with severe malaria between 2008 and 2017. Children with stored admission blood samples available for creatinine measurement were included in the analysis. Surviv

Nut Consumption, Kidney Function, Chronic Kidney Disease and Mortality: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This systematic review evaluates the association between nut consumption and kidney health outcomes, including kidney function markers and chronic kidney disease (CKD) incidence, prevalence, and mortality. Given the nutritional benefits of nuts and the growing burden of CKD, we aimed to assess whether nut consumption is associated with kidney-related outcomes and to assess the strength and consistency of the available evidence. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent observational studies and cohort analyses provide emerging but heterogeneous evidence on the relationship between nut intake

Reduced Brain Complexity During the Execution of a Sequential Arm Movement Following an Augmented-Feedback-Based Practice: A Multiscale Entropy Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal normothermic regional perfusion (aNRP) may mitigate ischemic injury in donation after circulatory death (DCD). Specific aNRP-DCD kidney transplant (KTx) outcomes are inadequately defined. Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) assigns equivalent DCD risk components to all DCD kidneys and may not capture procurement-related differences. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed KTx from donors in a single donation service area procured between January 2023-December 2024. DCD-restricted multivariable logistic and Cox models compared aNRP-DCD with super-rapid recovery (SRR)-DCD and e

Gigantol Ameliorates High-Fat and High-Fructose Diet-Induced Chronic Kidney Disease by Promoting TFEB-Mediated Mitophagy to Suppress Ferroptosis.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a serious public health challenge that closely correlates with unhealthy diets. Gigantol, a naturally active compound derived from the edible plant Dendrobium, has shown potential in renal protection, but its efficacy in treating metabolic dysfunction-related CKD driven by a high-fat and high-fructose diet (HFFD) remains unclear. Here, we found that gigantol restored abnormal renal function and pathological manifestations in HFFD-fed mice. Mechanistically, gigantol suppresses the phosphorylation of TFEB at Ser211 and promotes TFEB nuclear translocation to enhanc

Herbal-Cake-Separated Moxibustion Ameliorates Renal Fibrosis and Associated Bone Injury in Rats via the TGF-β1/Smad Signaling Pathway.

Renal fibrosis is the main pathological basis for chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression and is often accompanied by decreased bone density and impaired bone microstructure. The TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathway may be a common intervention target for kidney and bone injury. This study evaluated the effects of herbal-cake-separated moxibustion (HCSM) on renal fibrosis and bone damage in CKD rats and explored its potential mechanism. CKD was induced by adenine gavage combined with a high-protein diet. Successfully modeled rats were randomly assigned to model, HCSM, and SIS3 groups (n = 6 each), w

Delayed diagnosis of MEN1 after kidney transplantation: unrecognized pre-transplant features and implications for clinical practice.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1), characterized by multiglandular endocrine tumors such as hyperparathyroidism (HPT), is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by mutations of the MEN1 gene. In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), abnormalities in calcium-phosphate metabolism may obscure this diagnosis, making the recognition of MEN1 challenging. A 68-year-old man with end-stage renal disease underwent an ABO-compatible living-donor kidney transplantation (KT); however, persistent hypercalcemia prompted further evaluation, which revealed recurrent HPT with bilateral parathyroid

Plasma Proteomics of Cancer Risk Among Patients with CKD.

BACKGROUND: Patients with CKD have higher cancer risk and worse outcomes than the general population. Circulating proteins are important biomarkers of incident and recurrent cancer, but CKD profoundly remodels the proteome. High-throughput assays now allow systematic interrogation of protein-phenotype associations and may identify biomarkers of cancer risk in CKD. METHODS: We measured 4,091 plasma proteins using SomaScan v4 in patients without prior cancer at the year 1 visit of the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort. For each protein, we fit Cox models evaluating incident overall and specifi

Equity in Kidney Allocation: An Examination of Out of Sequence Kidney Transplant Recipients at a Single Center.

Transplant centers and organ procurement organizations (OPOs) collaborate to optimize organ use by facilitating out of sequence (OOS) kidney offers, but national data suggest this may worsen disparities. We retrospectively analyzed all kidney transplant recipients at a single center from July 2022 to July 2024. We compared OOS versus in-sequence (IS) kidney transplants by demographics, panel reactive antibody scores (cPRA), socioeconomic factors, and dialysis vintage. Among 503 recipients, 330 (66%) received OOS kidneys. OOS recipients were older (61 vs. 57 years, p < 0.001), more frequently m
