BACKGROUND: Renal impairment (RI) has been shown to be one major risk factor in a number of diseases and is associated with a dismal clinical outcome. However, the influence of milder degrees of renal disease is less well defined, particularly not in patients with malignant diseases.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed 167 patients with solid tumors and hematological malignancies. Besides disease-specific parameters, serum creatinine, cystatin C and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ['modification of diet in renal disease' equation (MDRD)/Cockcroft-Gault (CG)] were determined. We report on a case of life-threatening abdominal aorta hemorrhage following percutaneous renal biopsy. A 42-year-old woman with chronic kidney disease stage 2 and microscopic hematuria underwent a percutaneous renal biopsy to evaluate renal insufficiency. One hour following the biopsy procedure, she complained of an abdominal pain and developed signs ofoligemic shock. In despite of 4 blood units transfusion, the patient continued to be in shock. She was transmitted urgently to the operating room without any other examinations (such as abdominal computer tomography) and underwent an emergency

The coexistence of kidney disease with a need for immunosuppressive therapy leads to the convergence of several threats to bone. These comprise general effects of the primary disease, e.g., inflammatory state, more specific effects of acute renal failure or chronic kidney disease, and effects of therapies. Multisystem inflammatory disease that requires immunosuppression is associated frequently with kidney damage, and any reduction of kidney function that takes the patient into or beyond chronic kidney disease stage 2 for more than a short time is likely to have a negative impact on bone healt

Two patients with chronic kidney disease experienced a major bleeding event, retroperitoneal hematoma, requiring a blood transfusion after the administration of enoxaparin. The first patient was a 61-year-old Caucasian woman with multiple comorbidities, including chronic kidney disease stage 4. She received subcutaneous enoxaparin 45 mg every 12 hours, along with antiplatelet agents. On the seventh day, she developed a large retroperitoneal hematoma and her hematocrit had decreased, requiring a transfusion of packed red blood cells. The second patient was a 74-year-old, obese Caucasian woman w
