Association between copper exposure and renal fibrosis in patients with chronic kidney disease: evidence from Mendelian randomization and a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD), a global health challenge, is closely linked to renal fibrosis progression. Copper, an essential trace element, influences cellular functions, yet its role in CKD-related fibrosis remains unclear. This study explores the causal relationship between serum copper levels and renal fibrosis in CKD. METHODS: A two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis integrated GWAS and FinnGen data. Serum copper and other metals were quantified via ICP-MS in 505 CKD patients and 50 controls. Renal fibrosis was histologically assessed in 168 biopsy-confirmed cases.

Archetypal analysis of deceased donor kidneys: A molecular approach for posttransplant outcomes.

Donor kidney tissue-based transcriptomics may represent a new dimension for the prediction of kidney transplant outcomes. In this prospective, single-center study, 276 kidneys from 174 deceased brain-death donors were assessed by microarrays to identify phenotypes of procurement biopsies. Molecular classifiers (extreme gradient boosting, logistic, and Poisson regression) with 10-fold cross-validation were employed to categorize donors based on clinical variables (age, body mass index, hypertension, expanded criteria donor kidney) and histologic scores (vascular fibrous intimal thickening, inte

Parathyroidectomy for secondary hyperparathyroidism in chronic kidney disease: a retrospective study of predictors of persistence and postoperative outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially in the later stages. Parathyroidectomy (PTX) is recommended for patients who do not respond to medical treatment. However, in some cases, SHPT may persist due to incomplete gland resection or recur as a result of hyperplasia of remnant tissue. The aim of this study was to evaluate PTX outcomes in CKD patients treated at our center and identify predictors of persistent disease. METHODS: A retrospective, descriptive and analytical study was conducted on CKD patients who underwent

Alleles of CYP3A5 and their association with renal function in chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: The cytochrome P450 family 3 subfamily A polypeptide 5 (CYP3A5) gene plays an important role in renal function through its product's involvement in metabolizing endogenous substances and drugs, including immunosuppressants used following kidney transplantation. A single-nucleotide polymorphism, CYP3A5*3 (rs776746), produces a non-functional variant that may influence progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) by impairing renal filtration. However, the frequency of the CYP3A5*3 allele in the Thai population and its association with renal parameters remain underexplored. This study

Community Health Center Penetration and Kidney Care Outcomes among Low-Income, Nonelderly Adults with Kidney Failure.

KEY POINTS: Populations who experience health disparities often rely on community health centers (CHCs) for ambulatory care. Among low-income populations, higher CHC penetration is associated with greater preparedness for, and better outcomes after, kidney failure onset. Our study suggests that CHCs provide essential ambulatory care for nonelderly adults who experience kidney health disparities. BACKGROUND: In the United States, historically minoritized populations experience disproportionately high incidence of progressive kidney disease but are often unprepared for kidney failure. Owing to
