Nephrolithiasis is a common disease of the urinary system, of which idiopathic calcium oxalate (CaOx) kidney stones, in particular, are one of the special types. In the initial stages of CaOx kidney stone formation, Randall's plaques (RPs) develop. Liver X receptors (LXRs) inhibit oxidative stress and inflammatory in other diseases; nevertheless, the role of LXRs in nephrolithiasis has yet to be elucidated. In this study, the role of LXRs in the progression of RP formation was investigated. Microarray analysis revealed that LXR/RXR levels were significantly greater in low-plaque tissues (<5%) t

BACKGROUND: Ureteroscopy combined with laser stone fragmentation and basketing is a common approach for managing renal and ureteral stones. This procedure is associated with some degree of ureteral trauma. Ureteral trauma may lead to swelling, ureteral obstruction, and flank pain and may require subsequent interventions such as hospital admission or secondary ureteral stent placement. To prevent such issues, urologists often place temporary ureteral stents prophylactically, but the value of doing so remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of postoperative ureteral stent placement a

Introduction: Calculous nephrectomy was a mainstay of treatment of complex upper tract stone disease up until the 1970s, but data on its contemporary utilization in the current era of rising rates of stone disease are lacking. We characterized the nationwide utilization and outcomes for calculous nephrectomy in the United States. Patients and Methods: The National/Nationwide Inpatient Sample databases for 2001 to 2014 were queried for adults with a principal diagnosis of upper urinary tract calculi (UUTCs), who underwent nephrectomy as well as other inpatient surgeries for UUTCs. Per-populatio

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Perforation of the bladder or urethra and erosion of the mesh after cystocele repair surgery are not uncommon and have potentially serious complications. Traditionally, surgical management of such complications has involved excision of the mesh using either a transurethral approach or open surgery. In this video, we present our experience of laparoscopic transvesical surgery for exposed mesh and stone.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patient was placed in the lithotomy position under general anesthesia and a 30° operating cystoscope was inserted under direct vision. After f

BACKGROUND: It has been recognized that the incidence of prostatic utricle in boys is increasing and is closely associated with diseases such as hypospadias. However, the clinical features of prostatic utricle with normal external genitalia have received little attention.
METHODS: Based on this, a series of 22 male children with prostatic utricles has been compiled by adding our 3 patients to 19 cases reported. All children enrolled had normal external genitalia. Clinical data of the case was reviewed.
RESULTS: Urinary tract infection, purulent urethral discharge and pyuria were the most com

The purpose of our study is to analyze the definitive relation of C-reactive protein (CRP) and other factors with the spontaneous stone passage in patients with distal ureteric calculus of 5-10 mm and to calculate the risk of failure of expectant management in patients. 185 patients of ureteric colic, who were subjected to medical expulsive therapy (MET), were included prospectively from August 2016 to May 2018 and followed up for 4 weeks. Patients were divided into two groups. Group A included successful spontaneous passage patients and group B included failure in the same. The parameters ana

Nephrolithiasis is a common pathology encountered in the primary care and emergency department (ED) setting. In 2009 alone, there were over one million ED visits related to nephrolithiasis Higa et al. (2017) [1]. Emergent treatment options range from non-invasive pain control and patient education to lithotripsy and other invasive urologic procedures depending on stone location and related pathology. Urethral calculi are estimated to represent 0.3% of all urinary stone diseases Verit et al. (2006) [2]. There are very few case reports documenting distal urethral stone removal in the ED. Here we

BACKGROUND: Struvite urolithiasis with bacterial urinary tract infection (UTI) is commonly reported in dogs; few data exist to describe successful dissolution protocols in dogs with naturally occurring disease. We hypothesized that a dry therapeutic urinary diet combined with targeted antimicrobial therapy can effectively dissolve presumptive struvite cystolithiasis in dogs with naturally occurring urease-producing bacterial UTI.
RESULTS: Ten dogs with presumed infection-induced struvite cystolithiasis based on lower urinary tract signs (LUTS), radiodense cystoliths, and urease-producing bact

To investigate the surgical outcomes of vesiculoscopy on refractory hematospermia and ejaculatory duct obstruction (EDO), the clinical data (including pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations and the long-term effects of endoscopic treatment) from 305 patients were analyzed. Four main etiologic groups were found on MRI. We found that 62.0% (189/305) of patients showed abnormal signal intensity in MRI investigations in the seminal vesicle (SV) area. Cystic lesions were observed in 36.7% (112/305) of the patients. The third sign was dilatation or enlargement of unilateral or bilatera

BACKGROUND: Although the indications of minimally invasive treatments for pediatric urolithiasis are similar to those in adults, it is still crucial to make the right treatment decision due to the special considerations of children. This review aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), and retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) in the management of pediatric upper urinary tract stones.
METHODS: EMBASE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library were searched from their first available date to March 2018. The studies that m

Introduction: Patients unfit for general anesthesia who present with renal tract pathology currently have limited options. Many of these patients present in the emergency setting with imperative reasons for intervention, including sepsis, renal failure, and pain. Conservative management and temporizing measures, such as percutaneous nephrostomy, are associated with significant morbidity. Ureterorenoscopy (URS) is a central component of the management of upper tract disease and is routinely performed under general anesthesia. We describe our institution's experience of URS using only local anes

BACKGROUND: Ureteroscopic management of ureteral calculi using topical anaesthesia has been described. Most studies topically anaesthetized the urethra or urinary bladder by instilling 2% of plain lignocaine. In addition to the success rate, the pain perception in these studies was reported subjectively using non-standard criteria. Topical anaesthesia of the ipsilateral ureter and the pelvicalyceal system (PCS), in addition to urethra and urinary bladder, and use of alkalinised lignocaine, for enhanced effect, has not been reported for ureteroscopy. Using these conceptual alterations, we teste

Urethral diverticulum is a condition where the urethra or the periurethral glands push into the connective tissue layers that surround it. Patients of urethral diverticulum present with nonspecific symptoms such as incontinence, urinary frequency and urgency, and pain during sexual intercourse and urination. The incidence of this condition is low. We report a case of giant anterior urethra stones combined with a diverticulum with no lower urinary tract symptoms. We believe that this case is extremely rare, and the process of diagnosis and treatment is of great significance in clinical practice

Calcium stones and calculi are observed in numerous human tissues. They are the result of deposition of calcium salts and are due to high local calcium concentrations. Prostatic calculi are usually classified as endogenous or extrinsic stones. Endogenous stones are commonly caused by obstruction of the prostatic ducts around an enlarged prostate resulting from benign prostatic hyperplasia or from chronic inflammation. The latter occurs mainly around the urethra and is generally caused by reflux of urine into the prostate. Calcium concentrations higher than in the plasma at sites of infection m
