Introduction Radiolucent urinary calculi, primarily uric acid and struvite stones, pose a diagnostic challenge due to their indistinct appearance on plain radiographs. Differentiating between these two types is essential, as they require markedly different therapeutic strategies. This study evaluates the combined utility of Hounsfield units (HU) from non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) and urine pH values as non-invasive predictors of stone composition in radiolucent calculi. We hypothesized that the combination of HU and urine pH can accurately differentiate between uric acid and struvite

BACKGROUND: Urethral diverticulum is a sac-like dilation that extends from the urethral lumen and is connected to it. It can either be congenital or acquired, with the latter being more common. The development of calculi is rare in such patients. Management is tailored based on the patient's symptoms and findings from investigations.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old African male presented with recurrent urinary tract infections and a burning sensation during urination. He was diagnosed with a congenital Urethral diverticulum in the bulbar urethral containing a large stone based on the finding

PURPOSE: Ureteroscopy is one of the main diagnostic and treatment approaches for the upper urinary system luminal pathologies today. In recent years complication rates have decreased significantly. Standardizing ureteral damage after ureteroscopic interventions is of great importance for the management of complications. This study aimed to prospectively evaluate ureteral damage and factors affecting it in patients who underwent retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) with ureteral access sheath (UAS), RIRS without UAS, and stone treatment with semi-rigid ureteroscope.
METHODS: In this study, we

RATIONALE: Ureteral stones, particularly in elderly patients, pose significant clinical challenges due to their association with severe pain, infection, and urinary obstruction. While the introduction of minimally invasive techniques, such as ureteroscopy and ureteral stenting, has revolutionized treatment, gaps remain in understanding how comorbid conditions like diabetes affect patient outcomes.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 68-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital for 3 days due to left lumbar and abdominal pain accompanied by fever.
DIAGNOSES: Abdominal computed tomography revealed se

Surgical management of urinary stones has significantly evolved with the advent of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy, flexible ureterorenoscopy (fURS), and percutaneous nephrolithotomy. For lower pole stones larger than 1 cm, the choice between fURS and miniaturized percutaneous nephrolithotomy remains debated. fURS with ureteric access sheaths (UAS) is a widely utilized technique, but fragment clearance is challenging in unfavorable anatomical conditions and/or lower pole stones. This study compares a novel flexible suction UAS (FANS) with a standard UAS in an in vitro model of lower pole

BACKGROUND: Management of pelvic fracture-related urethral injury (PFUI) in children remains debated due to various complications. Patients typically receive either primary realignment (PR) or suprapubic cystostomy with delayed urethroplasty (SCDU), but optimal outcomes are unclear. This study evaluates these two surgical techniques by reviewing 20 years of case data and existing literature.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients treated for PFUI from 2004 to 2023, with a median follow-up of 2 years (1-15 years). Additionally, we performed a meta-analysis of relevant literature, search

ObjectivesWe sought to characterize cystoscopy-assisted urolith retrieval via a perineal urethrostomy stoma (CUPU) initially in a cadaveric model and then in clinical cases. We hypothesized that a CUPU would provide a reasonable alternative to the traditional approach of performing a cystotomy after perineal urethrostomy in male cats with complex or recurrent urolithiasis-associated urethral obstruction (UO).MethodsA perineal urethrostomy (PU) was performed in 20 male cat cadavers. A randomly assigned number of synthetic calculi (SynC) was placed retrograde into the urinary bladder, and an end

BACKGROUND: Urethral obstruction due to urolithiasis is an uncommon problem reported in dromedary camels. Urethral catheterization is recommended as an emergency preliminary alternative to palliative urethrostomy to preserve valuable animals for breeding purposes. This procedure is not possible in camels due to the narrow diameter of the tortuous urethra, presence of sigmoid flexure and urethral recess and unavailability of specific full-length catheter.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the normograde catheterization of the camel urethra through cystotomy incision by using 6-Fr, 70 cm, PVC straight-tip u

Prostate calculi, or prostatic stones, are typically small, greyish-brown, ultrasound-dense formations composed mainly of carbonated calcium phosphate apatite. We present a 65-year-old male with severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), including weak urinary stream, difficulty urinating, and acute retention, who was found to have a 4 cm prostate stone. Imaging confirmed obstruction of the prostatic urethra. Surgical intervention with transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and Holmium laser lithotripsy successfully removed the stone and relieved symptoms. This case emphasizes the nee

Background: The minimally invasive treatment of bladder stones (BS) in children has been demonstrated to be safe and effective by both transurethral cystolithotripsy (TUCL) and percutaneous cystolithotomy (PCCL). The surgical outcomes and potential complications associated with these two treatments remain uncertain. We conducted a meta-analysis to compare TUCL and PCCL in pediatric BS with a focus on long-term stone-free rates (SFR), postoperative complications, and cost-effectiveness. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were last searched on September 1

INTRODUCTION: Posterior urethral valve (PUV) and vesical calculus are individually among the most common causes of obstructive lower urinary symptoms in children. Intermittent urinary retention can be caused by a combination of PUVs and bladder stones. There are very few reports of an association between PUVs and bladder calculus.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of intermittent urinary retention resulting from a stone obstructing the PUV. The patient experienced intermittent urinary retention for over a month. A computed tomography scan revealed a bladder stone in the posterior urethra.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound is routinely used in the diagnosis of renal calculi and resulting hydronephrosis. However, its utility in the diagnosis and management of urethral calculi is less well understood. The ability to rapidly diagnose urethral calculi using point of care ultrasound (POCUS) would be useful in the emergency department (ED) to improve patient outcomes and avoid more invasive investigations.
KEY FINDINGS: This case report presents the occurrence of an obstructed urethral calculus in a 42-year-old male, where POCUS facilitated a prompt and accurate diagnosis. The ability to charac
