INTRODUCTION: The treatment of stone disease is mostly similar in those adult and children. The standard treatment procedures are as follows: extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), ureterorenoscopy (URS), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), and laparoscopic surgery in selected cases. Open surgery (OS) is another option particularly in such cases with anatomic abnormalities of urinary tract.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to provide comparative results of stone removal procedures in preschool aged patients who were diagnosed with urinary system stone disease.

INTRODUCTION: During the last decade, the advent of flexible ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy has revolutionized the management of upper urinary tract stones. Our center is a primary care hospital that is equipped with this technology since January 2011. This study reported our initial experience of first 225 cases.
MATERIEL AND METHODS: This study is a descriptive, retrospective and monocentric analysis. The first 225 cases, operated consecutively by 3 surgeons during 26 months, were analyzed. We have used 2 flexible ureteroscopes (1 digital, 1 optical). Laser source was an Holmium laser

Diagnostic imaging is routinely performed in small animals with lower urinary tract disease. Survey radiographs allow identification of radiopaque calculi, gas within the urinary tract, and lymph node or bone metastases. Cystography and urethrography remain useful in the evaluation of bladder or urethral rupture, abnormal communication with other organs, and lesions of the pelvic or penile urethra. Ultrasonography is the modality of choice for the diagnosis of most disorders. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are useful in evaluating the ureterovesical junction and intrapelvic

Haematuria has a prevalence of 12% in the postrenal transplant patient population. It heralds potentially dangerous causes which could threaten graft loss. It is important to consider causes in light of the unique, urological, and immunological standpoints of these patients. We review the literature on common causes of haematuria in postrenal transplant patients and suggest the salient approach to the evaluation of this condition. A major cause of haematuria is urinary tract infections. There should be a higher index of suspicion for mycobacterial, fungal, and viral infection in this group of

Uroliths occur commonly in the bladder and/or urethra of dogs and cats and can be life-threatening if urethral obstruction occurs. The majority of uroliths are composed of struvite or calcium oxalate; however, other minerals such as urate and cystine occur. Uroliths may be composed of more than one mineral. Some uroliths are amenable to medical dissolution (eg, struvite, urate, and cystine) while others (eg, calcium oxalate) are not. Medical management involves decreasing urine saturation for the minerals that form uroliths.

A 2-year-old domestic shorthair cat was presented with a history of hematuria, stranguria and intermittent urethral obstruction. Urine sediment showed hematuria, pyuria, and yellow-brown, amorphous and spherical crystals. Upon surgical correction of the obstructed urethra by perineal urethrostomy, many dark yellow to grey, irregular, gravel-like to millet grain-sized uroliths, consisting of 100% xanthine by crystallography were found. The urinary xanthine concentration was high. The cat subsequently developed bilateral nephroliths, recurrent urinary tract infection, and chronic kidney failure.

Urethral diverticulum (UD) is a condition in which a variably sized outpouching forms, next to the urethra. Because it connects to the urethra, this outpouching repeatedly gets filled with urine during micturition, thus causing symptoms. In females, it presents as a bulge in anterior vagina, mimicking a vaginal wall cyst. Various aetiologies proposed attributing to urethral diverticulum formation is repeated infection of the periurethral gland, childbirth trauma, iatrogenic and urethral instrumentation. Patients of UD present with non specific irritative lower urinary tract symptoms such as in

OBJECTIVE: Skin-to-stone distance (SSD) is a stronger factor than body mass index in predicting the success of shock wave lithotripsy. We aimed to evaluate the impact of SSD on outcomes of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of 1,280 patients who had undergone PCNL between April 2007 and February 2012 were evaluated retrospectively. 192 patients who had had preoperative non-contrasted computed tomography and single renal access were included the study. According to this median SSD value, patients were divided into two groups: group 1 (SSD ≤94 mm) (n

Most men will develop histological BPH if they live long enough. Approximately, half will develop benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) and about half of these will get BOO with high bladder pressures and low flow, this in turn leads to detrusor wall hypertrophy. Many of these men will only have lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) but a significant number will also suffer the other complications of BPH. These include urinary retention (acute and chronic), haematuria, urinary tract infection, bladder stones, bladder wall damage, renal dysfunction, incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Recognition

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Flexible ureterorenoscopy (f-URS) for lower pole stones (LPS) compared with other renal locations can be challenging because of anatomic and technical considerations. We aimed to compare the stone-free rate (SFR) and surgical complication rate with f-URS for LPS vs other renal locations.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective, single-center study including 371 f-URS for renal stone retrieval performed in our institution between January 2004 and December 2010. Among the 371 procedures included in this analysis, 139 were performed for stones located in a sing

The purpose of this study was to evaluate how the upper calyx-lower calyx infundibular (ULI) angle influences intrarenal stone migration during percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in patients with a solitary renal pelvis stone and significant hydronephrosis. 50 adult patients with a solitary renal pelvis stone larger than 20 mm were considered for PCNL with a pneumatic lithotriptor for stone fragmentation. Inclusion criteria were moderate to severe hydronephrosis and upper calyx infundibular width >10 mm, and access point was the lower calyx in all cases. The ULI angle as well as stone fragmen

BACKGROUND: Overgrowth of calcium oxalate on Randall's plaque is a mechanism of stone formation among idiopathic calcium oxalate stone-formers (ICSFs). It is less clear how stones form when there is little or no plaque.
DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: Participants were a consecutive cohort of ICSFs who underwent percutaneous nephroscopic papillary mapping in the kidney or kidneys containing symptomatic stones and a papillary tip biopsy from a representative calyx during a stone removal procedure between 2009 and 2013. The distribution of Randall's plaque coverage was analyzed a

PURPOSE: Double-pigtail stent intolerance reduces patient's quality of life. By decreasing the amount of material within the bladder, it should be possible to attenuate stent's symptoms. We evaluated the tolerance of a new stent with a dedicated questionnaire.
METHODS: The major innovation of the pigtail suture stent (PSS) is in the replacement of the lower part of the double-pigtail stent with a 0.3F suture. A total of 79 consecutive patients agreed to be fitted with a PSS. The double-pigtail stents of 24 patients complaining strongly of symptoms were replaced with PSS (group 1), and 55 othe

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), placement of the access tract into the kidney is an important aspect of the procedure and is responsible for the steep learning curve associated with the operation. The aim of the current prospective randomized trial was to assess the duration of radiation exposure along with the safety and efficacy of PCNL done by a trainee, utilizing either ultrasonography (US) or fluoroscopic guidance to obtain access.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty-four patients with ≤3 cm renal calculi undergoing single-tract PCNL by trainee urologists (experie

BACKGROUND: Stones in the urinary tract are a common medical problem in the general population. At present, the great expansion in minimally invasive techniques has led to the decrease in open surgery. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) has been introduced as an alternative approach which disintegrates stones in the kidney and upper urinary tract through the use of shock waves. Nevertheless, as there are limitations with the success rate in ESWL, other minimally invasive modalities for kidney stones such as percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS)
