Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the kidney parenchyma with ascending colon invasion: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the kidney parenchyma is extremely rare, with only seven cases reported to date. Herein, we present a case of primary with colon invasion. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 61-year-old man presented right flank pain for 5 months. Computed tomography (CT) showed multiple renal stones and a necrotic mass in the lower pole of the right kidney, which was suspicious for ascending colon invasion. There was no history of radiation or occupational exposure to chemicals. Radical nephrectomy, right hemicolectomy, and lymph node dissection were performed. The

Ability of ESWL nomograms to predict stone-free rate in children.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to evaluate whether the pediatric extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) nomograms can predict stone-free status in children effectively and whether they are applicable to our series. We hypothesize that two current nomograms predicting successful treatment with ESWL in pediatric patients are valid. STUDY DESIGN: We evaluated 415 renal units (children <18 years) with eligible data who received ESWL treatment for upper urinary tract stones. Children's age, gender, stone size, stone surface area, stone location and history of previous intervention were recorded. Chi

Radiation Dose Reduction in Kidney Stone CT: A Randomized, Facility-Based Intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Kidney stones are common, tend to recur, and afflict a young population. Despite evidence and recommendations, adoption of reduced-radiation dose CT (RDCT) for kidney stone CT (KSCT) is slow. We sought to design and test an intervention to improve adoption of RDCT protocols for KSCT using a randomized facility-based intervention. METHODS: Facilities contributing at least 40 KSCTs to the American College of Radiology dose index registry (DIR) during calendar year 2015 were randomized to intervention or control groups. The Dose Optimization for Stone Evaluation intervention included

Bilateral pelvic kidneys with upper pole fusion and malrotation: a  case report and  review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of ectopic kidneys is 1:12,000 clinically and 1:900 postmortem. Patients with pelvic mal-rotated kidneys are more susceptible to recurrent urinary tract infections, recurrent renal stones, and renal injury. Fusion of the kidney lower poles is relatively common compared to other types of renal anomalies. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 36-year-old Sudanese female patient who presented with a long history of recurrent urinary tract infections unresponsive to antibiotics. Ultrasound scan revealed bilateral pelvic kidneys. Computed tomography (CT) urography c

The evaluation of morphology of renal pelvicalyceal system's and infundibulopelvic anatomy of kidney's lower pole in post-mortem series.

BACKGROUND: Urinary system stones are frequently encountered in the community. Together with technological developments, introduction of new treatment procedures such as extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy and retrograde intrarenal surgery has further reduced morbidity, mortality and hospitalisation time of patients. In order to maximise success and to reduce complications of these procedures, it is necessary to evaluate anatomy and morphological differences of kidney collector system before the procedure. This study was conducted for the purpose of determining

The effect of renal localization on the fate of clinically insignificant residual fragments after retrograde intrarenal surgery: A prospective 1-year follow-up study.

OBJECTIVES: Even after a successful retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), clinically insignificant residual fragments (CIRF) could not pass from the kidney. We aimed to find out the differences on the fate of CIRF according to being in the lower pole or other renal localizations. METHODS: 81 patients whose stones were fragmented completely by RIRS were subdivided into two groups as group 1 (lower pole with 41 patients) and group 2 (upper pole, midpole, and renal pelvis with 40 patients). Basal characteristics, urine culture, and renal stone screening were evaluated before and 1-year later fro

Shockwave lithotripsy for kidney stones as a first-line therapy in children younger than 2 years.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of urolithiasis in children has risen worldwide over the last decades with geographical varieties. As pediatric patients begin forming stones earlier in life, they have high risk of recurrence. Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) is a non-invasive treatment modality that is preferred in the management of pediatric stones. Reports about the safety and efficacy of SWL in patients younger than 24 months are scarce in the literature. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of SWL in patients younger than 24 months. The authors

An abundant quiescent stem cell population in Drosophila Malpighian tubules protects principal cells from kidney stones.

Adult Drosophila Malpighian tubules have low rates of cell turnover but are vulnerable to damage caused by stones, like their mammalian counterparts, kidneys. We show that Drosophilarenal stem cells (RSCs) in the ureter and lower tubules comprise a unique, unipotent regenerative compartment. RSCs respond only to loss of nearby principal cells (PCs), cells critical for maintaining ionic balance. Large polyploid PCs are outnumbered by RSCs, which replace each lost cell with multiple PCs of lower ploidy. Notably, RSCs do not replenish principal cells or stellate cells in the upper tubules. RSCs g

Priapism secondary to tamsulosin: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Tamsulosin is the most potent adrenergic alpha-1 antagonist used for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Priapism has been reported as a rare side effect through direct inhibition of the sympathetic input necessary for detumesence. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We describe an otherwise healthy man with recurrent and then persistent unresolved priapism after the use of tamsulosin and concomitant use of ace inhibitor and beta blocker for hypertension. We then performed aspiration and intracavernosal irrigation of saline and vasoconstrictive agent. DISCUSSION: Health-care profe
