A comparative study of endoscopic combined intrarenal surgery (ECIRS) in the galdakao-modified supine valdivia (GMSV) position and minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy for complex nephrolithiasis: a retrospective single-center study.

The aim of this research is to compare the efficiency and safety between endoscopic combined intrarenal surgery (ECIRS) in the Galdakao-modified Supine Valdivia (GMSV) position and minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy (Mini-PCNL) in a single session for the treatment of complex nephrolithiasis. 140 consecutive patients who were diagnosed with multiple pyelocaliceal stones or staghorn renal calculi were enrolled and reviewed retrospectively. Demographic, clinical information and surgical outcomes were collected and analyzed. Demographic variables and stone characteristics did not sho

Incidentally detected pancake kidney: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies of the urinary system are very common and have extremely varied presentation. Among them, the most rarely found structural anomaly is the pancake kidney. When both kidneys are fused along their medial surfaces to form a round-shaped single renal mass, it is termed as pancake kidney. In this case report, a pancake kidney was incidentally detected in a girl. The majority of individuals who have pancake kidney are usually asymptomatic but surgeons should be aware of coexisting malformation of other organs and its potential risk of developing malignancy. Laser-guided real-time automatic target identification for endoscopic stone lithotripsy: a two-arm in vivo porcine comparison study.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Thermal injuries associated with Holmium laser lithotripsy of the urinary tract are an underestimated problem in stone therapy. Surgical precision relies exclusively on visual target identification when applying laser energy for stone disintegration. This study evaluates a laser system that enables target identification automatically during bladder stone lithotripsy, URS, and PCNL in a porcine animal model. METHODS: Holmium laser lithotripsy was performed on two domestic pigs by an experienced endourology surgeon in vivo. Human stone fragments (4-6 mm) were inserte

Usability of shear wave elastography to predict the success of extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy: prospective pilot study.

The present study is intended to investigate the usability of shear wave elastography (SWE) in predicting the success of extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) used in kidney stone treatment. ESWL was performed on a total number of 52 patients diagnosed with kidney stones between May 2019 and July 2020. The presence of a residual stone greater than 4 mm was accepted as failure. The patients were divided into two groups as ESWL success and ESWL failure. SWE and Hounsfield unit (HU) measurements of stones were performed in all patients before ESWL. The two groups were compared in terms of

Nephrostomy tubes placed emergently prior to percutaneous renal stone surgery are practical for obtaining access.

OBJECTIVES: Renal access in percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) may be obtained via a pre-existing nephrostomy tube (NT) tract; however, emergent NTs are not always ideal for subsequent surgery. We sought to determine the rate of NT tract usability and assess factors related to the usability of emergently placed NTs. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of UC San Diego subjects undergoing percutaneous renal surgery between January 2016 and October 2018. Demographics and peri-operative variables were collected. The primary outcome was the usability of NT tract for dilation and instrum

Effects of various catheter fix sites on catheter-associated lower urinary tract symptoms.

The present study aimed to compare the effects of various catheter fix sites on catheter-associated lower urinary tract symptoms (CALUTS) in 450 patients who underwent surgical removal of upper urinary calculi 24 h earlier. All patients had 16 French Foley catheters inserted and the balloons were filled. In group A, the catheters were fixed on the top one-third of the thigh. In group B, the catheters were fixed on the abdominal wall. Patients in whom the catheters were neither fixed on the thigh nor abdominal wall were designated as controls. There were 150 patients in each group. CALUTS, such

The role of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in the future of stone management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The most relevant recent findings on the use of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in adult population to provide an insight of its role in the current and future of stone treatment. Comparing ESWL with other modalities is not in the scope of this review. RECENT FINDINGS: We conducted a PubMed/Embase search and reviewed recent publications that include relevant information on the development of ESWL. Low-rate shock waves improve stone breakage, ramping energy modalities improve stone fragmentation and have lower incidence of hematoma and kidney injury. Transglutea

Activation of liver X receptor suppresses osteopontin expression and ameliorates nephrolithiasis.

Nephrolithiasis is a common disease of the urinary system, of which idiopathic calcium oxalate (CaOx) kidney stones, in particular, are one of the special types. In the initial stages of CaOx kidney stone formation, Randall's plaques (RPs) develop. Liver X receptors (LXRs) inhibit oxidative stress and inflammatory in other diseases; nevertheless, the role of LXRs in nephrolithiasis has yet to be elucidated. In this study, the role of LXRs in the progression of RP formation was investigated. Microarray analysis revealed that LXR/RXR levels were significantly greater in low-plaque tissues (<5%) t

Ureteral stent versus no ureteral stent for ureteroscopy in the management of renal and ureteral calculi.

BACKGROUND: Ureteroscopy combined with laser stone fragmentation and basketing is a common approach for managing renal and ureteral stones. This procedure is associated with some degree of ureteral trauma. Ureteral trauma may lead to swelling, ureteral obstruction, and flank pain and may require subsequent interventions such as hospital admission or secondary ureteral stent placement. To prevent such issues, urologists often place temporary ureteral stents prophylactically, but the value of doing so remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of postoperative ureteral stent placement a

Contemporary Analysis of Calculous Nephrectomy Utilization and Outcomes in the United States.

Introduction: Calculous nephrectomy was a mainstay of treatment of complex upper tract stone disease up until the 1970s, but data on its contemporary utilization in the current era of rising rates of stone disease are lacking. We characterized the nationwide utilization and outcomes for calculous nephrectomy in the United States. Patients and Methods: The National/Nationwide Inpatient Sample databases for 2001 to 2014 were queried for adults with a principal diagnosis of upper urinary tract calculi (UUTCs), who underwent nephrectomy as well as other inpatient surgeries for UUTCs.
