Coastal Vibrio harbor a high diversity of underexplored antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). Their selective maintenance in the absence of antibiotic selection is puzzling. While their mobilization is rare, it may just be a question of time when the ecological context turns the coastal environment into a source for ARG spillover.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: In traditional Chinese medicine, chili peppers and their seeds have been utilized for the treatment of watery diarrhea and malaria. Capsaicinoids, as the major bioactive compounds of these plants, possess diverse pharmacological activities. However, the specific effects of capsaicinoids on intestinal fluid secretion and motility remain unclear.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The chloride channels play a crucial role in regulating intestinal motility and fluid secretion. They are also major targets for the treatment of diarrhea and constipation. The aim of this study is to e

Retinal ganglion cell death occurs following injury to the optic nerve either by trauma or in disease such as glaucoma, leading to severe vision loss. Recent innovations have demonstrated that optic nerve regeneration is feasible; however, the regeneration is limited. The aim of the present study is to identify genomic elements enhancing axon regeneration. We have taken a forward genetics approach using the BXD recombinant mouse strains to identify a gene that increases the extent of optic nerve regeneration. Axon regeneration was induced by knocking down Pten in retinal ganglion cells using a

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric care management has the potential to streamline care delivery across fragmented child-serving sectors, but successfully engaging families is challenging. This study aimed to understand barriers and facilitators to family engagement from the perspectives of care managers in a pediatric integrated service delivery model for children with health and social needs.
METHODS: Three virtual focus groups were conducted with care managers from North Carolina Integrated Care for Kids (NC InCK), a federal demonstration model to integrate cross-sector care for Medicaid-enrolled childr

OBJECTIVES: The introduction of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccine has significantly reduced the disease's burden. Tribes comprise approximately 8.6% of the Indian population, making it pertinent to investigate the epidemiology of HBV among these individuals. We synthesized the prevalence of HBV among tribes in India.
METHODS: We searched the Medline (via the PubMed search engine), Embase, and CINAHL databases, in addition to the first 10 pages of Google Scholar. We included original observational studies that screened tribal populations for HBV infection, reported the prevalence of HBsAg (o

BACKGROUND: The global epidemics of cholera, a virulent enteric infection, pose a serious threat to public health and socio-economics. The disease's rapid spread and high mortality have led to heavy casualties, along with disruptions to production, rising healthcare burdens and impaired economic exchanges.
METHODS: Based on cholera historical and environmental data, Mann-Kendall test, wavelet analysis, hotspot analysis, epidemics center of gravity, and structural equation modeling were employed to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution pattern and formation mechanism of cholera epi

Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) occurs due to trauma to the optic nerve, resulting in blindness. Current management focuses primarily on supportive care, highlighting an urgent need to identify novel treatment targets. Neuronal expression of the enzyme histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) has been previously implicated in retinal ganglion cell (RGC) degeneration after optic nerve crush (ONC), a model of TON. Here we investigated the role of myeloid HDAC3 (i.e., HDAC3 expressed in microglia and macrophages) in RGC loss, axonal degeneration, and efferocytosis, a reparative process by which phagocytic

BACKGROUND: Zonulin, a key regulator of epithelial tight junctions, is implicated in intestinal and blood-brain barrier permeability and neuroinflammation. Although elevated zonulin is reported in schizophrenia, its expression in unaffected siblings and status as an endophenotype remain unclear. We compared serum zonulin levels among patients with schizophrenia, unaffected siblings and healthy controls, investigating association with symptom severity and cognitive function.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 43 patients with schizophrenia (SZ), 43 unaffected siblings (UAS), and 43 h

BACKGROUND: Sudan has a long history of struggling with recurrent cholera outbreaks. The interplay of infrastructure damage, massive displacement, and limited access to safe water and sanitation has increased the risk of cholera transmission. The study aims to identify priority areas for multisectoral interventions (PAMIs) to inform public health policy and ensure evidence-based strategic control of cholera in Sudan.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, national cholera data from 2016 to 2024 (excluding 2020-2022) were used. The Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC) tool for identifyi

Two years into Sudan's prolonged war, the collapse of health systems has fueled multiple concurrent epidemics, triggering a complex humanitarian emergency with regional spillover risks. Over 30 million people need aid, more than 11 million displaced internally, and cross-border movement has exacerbated the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases, including Cholera, Measles, and circulating vaccine-derived Poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2). This review analyzes emerging epidemiological patterns and operational barriers to epidemic control in the context of armed conflict, displacement, and infrastructu

The rodent hippocampal-presubicular-entorhinal circuit is thought to be a key part of the circuitry involved in memory formation. In primates, additional connections are believed to enable more complex and higher-order memory information processing. We investigated whether such additional connections exist in the cortical regions adjacent to the hippocampal formation using a tracer injection method. We discovered that the marmoset parasubiculum (ParS), presubiculum (PreS) (distal portion), and entorhinal cortex (EC) (proximal or medial portion) have strong reciprocal connections with the super

People with HIV (PWH) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) exhibit a heightened risk of non-AIDS-defining cancers (NADCs), linked to chronic inflammation driven by microbial translocation. We investigated whether plasma biomarkers of gut barrier dysfunction are associated with NADC risk, hypothesizing this association is modified by immune status. We conducted a case-cohort study nested within the Spanish CoRIS cohort. Plasma levels of zonulin-1, lipopolysaccharide, LPS-binding protein, and flagellin were measured in 71 incident NADC cases and a 261-individuals subcohort. Multivariable Cox proporti

Vibrio cholerae annually infects millions worldwide, causing intense and life-threatening diarrheal disease. The pentameric cholera toxin subunit B (CtxB) binds to the ganglioside GM1 on epithelial cells, initiating endocytosis and downstream toxicity. We present the total chemical protein synthesis of L-CtxB and mirror-image D-CtxB using a three-segment N-to-C native chemical ligation approach. Oxidative folding produced the desired 62 kDa pentameric proteins, with L-CtxB capable of binding native GM1 ligand. Synthetic D-CtxB is now ready to serve as a target in mirror-image phage display, re

Human organoids and organ-on-chip/microphysiological systems (OoC/MPS) are increasingly used as new-approach methodologies for biotoxin assessment. They retain human-relevant tissue organization and enable interpretable analysis of exposure geometry, barrier transport, perfusion, and (when needed) multi-organ coupling. In this review, we synthesize primary evidence across major toxin classes, including bacterial enterotoxins (e.g., cholera toxin, heat-stable enterotoxins, Shiga toxins), mycotoxins (e.g., aflatoxin B1, ochratoxin A, deoxynivalenol), and algal/cyanobacterial toxins (e.g., saxito

INTRODUCTION: Leech therapy or hirudotherapy has been part of the medical therapies and treatment for centuries. Their use decreased in the 19th century with the launch of asepsis and the great cholera epidemic in 1832. Later on, in 1980s, they were reintroduced in the management of post-operative venous congestion. Well known for free/pedicled flaps surgery, their use in hand surgery is more inconsistent. The purpose of this study was to review history, physiology of the leeches, and their use specifically in hand surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The bibliography was compiled using the PubMed

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the cascading and systemic nature of risks, in low-income, multi-hazard contexts such as Malawi, where pre-existing vulnerabilities amplified impacts across health, economic, and social systems. This study draws on qualitative data from stakeholder workshops and key informant interviews, triangulated with national statistics, to analyze how overburdened health systems, disrupted livelihoods, and inequitable resource distribution heightened socio-economic fragility. It also examines how concurrent hazards, including flooding and cholera outbreaks, interacted with t

The signaling cascade of strigolactone (SL)-regulated stomatal closure in Arabidopsis thaliana was investigated using pharmacological assays, fluorescence microscopy, spectrophotometry, gas chromatography, RT-PCR, and qRT-PCR. In wild-type plants, GR24 (a synthetic strigolactone analog)-induced stomatal closure was significantly inhibited by ethylene biosynthesis/perception inhibitors or Gα inhibitor pertussis toxin (PTX). GR24 obviously promoted closure in eto1-1, cGα1 and wGα1 mutants, but failed to do so in mutants etr1-1, etr1-3, gpa1-1 and gpa1-2. GR24 also upregulated 1-aminocyclopropane
