Retrospective Analysis of the Clinical Findings of 114 Horses with Eosinophilic Keratoconjunctivitis.

Eosinophilic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) is an inflammatory eye disease of horses with an unknown cause and suspected immune-mediated pathogenesis. This single-center retrospective case series included 114 horses (163 affected eyes) examined at a German equine referral hospital from January 2012 to December 2020. Of these horses, 71 (62.3%) were Warmbloods, 77 (67.5%) were presented from July to September, and 49 (43.0%) had bilateral disease. The cornea was involved in 139 of 163 eyes (85.3%). During the study period, 114 EKC cases occurred among 5742 ophthalmology cases (2.0%), with an increa

Topical Tacrolimus in Ocular Disease: A Narrative Review of Mechanism of Action and Therapeutic Applications.

PURPOSE: Immune-mediated inflammatory disorders of the ocular surface and anterior segment frequently require sustained immunosuppression, yet prolonged topical corticosteroid use carries the risk of glaucoma, cataract, and infection. Tacrolimus, a macrolide calcineurin inhibitor, has emerged as a steroid-sparing alternative for T-cell-mediated ocular disease. This review summarizes the mechanism of action, ocular pharmacology, clinical applications, and safety profile of topical tacrolimus. METHODS: Narrative synthesis of the peer-reviewed literature. RESULTS: Tacrolimus binds the immunophi

Serum Eye Drops for Ocular Surface Disease in Veterinary Ophthalmology: A Translational Review of Human and Veterinary Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Serum closely resembles natural tears in composition and contains higher growth factor levels than plasma in humans. Beyond its well-established anticollagenase properties, evidence from human ophthalmology suggests a broader therapeutic potential that may extend to the management of ocular surface diseases in animals. OBJECTIVES: This review examines the composition, mechanisms, and clinical applications of serum eye drops (SEDs) in human and veterinary ophthalmology, compares serum with plasma, and proposes a protocol for their formulation. RESULTS: SEDs provide a physiological

Charting the course of Sjögren's disease: A historical analysis of scientific progress.

Sjögren's disease (SjD) bears the name of the Swedish ophthalmologist Henrik Sjögren. His 1933 doctoral thesis on keratoconjunctivitis sicca ignited interest, yet much remains under debate. SjD is an autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the exocrine glands, particularly the salivary and lacrimal glands, leading to a dryness of the eyes and mouth. Diagnostic criteria have evolved significantly, with over 10 classification criteria proposed since 1965. From its inception, SjD was often overshadowed by other rheumatic diseases, struggling for recognition as a distinct autoimmune entity. Ear

Scleral perforation in a young adult with Burkitt lymphoma.

A male in his 20s with Burkitt lymphoma (BL) treated with chemotherapy was referred for lagophthalmos and left facial nerve palsy and re-evaluated weeks later due to acute scleral perforation. The perforated area was surgically closed, but on the first postoperative day, corneal thinning down to the Descemet membrane was noted, with iris adherence to the endothelium and progressive expansion of the affected sclera. Further globe reconstruction was deemed impossible; therefore, enucleation was performed. Histopathology revealed keratoconjunctivitis and acute perforative scleritis, though the aet

Cicatricial Ectropion in the Setting of IL-13 Inhibition.

INTRODUCTION: Interleukin (IL)-13 is a key mediator of type 2 inflammation and an important therapeutic target in atopic dermatitis (AD). Although IL-4/IL-13 and IL-13 inhibitors demonstrate favorable safety profiles, ocular adverse events are recognized complications. Conjunctivitis is most commonly reported, and cicatricial ectropion has been described with IL-4/IL-13 inhibition. We report what is, to our knowledge, the first reported case of cicatricial ectropion associated with inhibition of soluble IL-13. CASE PRESENTATION: An 81-year-old man with longstanding AD involving 60% body surfa

Broad evidence confirms that AR (ICD J30.3) is a chronic disease with high prevalence among children and adults worldwide. Its consequences, both from a public health perspective and at the level of the individual patient, are often underestimated, and the condition is inadequately treated. In addition, AR is often related to comorbidities with additional impact on diseases-severity. Allergen provocation of the easily accessible nasal (nasal allergen provocation test: NPT) or conjunctival mucosa (conjunctival allergen provocation test: CPT) reproduces the allergen-dependent, IgE-mediated aller

Susceptibility Weighted and Perfusion Imaging for Differentiating Recurrence and Radiation Necrosis in Post-Operative Malignant Brain Tumors: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Brain tumors present a challenge in oncology, necessitating comprehensive treatment strategies. Despite treatment, recurrence rates, especially in malignant tumors, remain high. Novel therapies have emerged, but treatment-related effects such as pseudo-progression (PsP) and radiation necrosis (RN) complicate diagnosis. Imaging techniques such as perfusion imaging and susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) show promise in distinguishing tumor progression from treatment effects. This retrospective study evaluated the effectiveness of these modalities in detecting brain tumours, their

Anesthetics and cancer biology: Translational evidence from perioperative modulation to drug repurposing (Review).

BACKGROUND: Reports suggest that children with mobility impairment represent a significant proportion of the population living with a disability. Footwear is considered to be the key extrinsic factor affecting children's gait and footwear modifications have been historically postulated to assist with locomotory difficulty. Although therapeutic footwear has been considered within the literature, there is a lack of consistency on terminology and paucity on the overall understanding. A scoping review was performed to chart the key concepts in children's footwear and to establish the range of stud

First simultaneous identification of Moraxella bovoculi and Moraxella bovis in one-humped camel (Camelus dromedaries) in the Sahara Desert.

This study describes the first simultaneous identification of Moraxella bovoculi and Moraxella bovis in dromedary camels from the Sahrawi refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria. Four lactating camels showing ocular lesions including conjunctival hyperemia, lacrimation, keratoconjunctivitis, and inflammation of the third eyelid were examined. Ocular swabs were collected and analyzed using real-time PCR for major bacterial and viral ocular pathogens. Only M. bovoculi (Cq 27) and M. bovis (Cq 36) were detected, while all other agents tested negative. Clinical recovery was achieved in all animals after

A Case of Distinctive Corneal Opacity Following Ciliary Sulcus Ahmed Tube Insertion in a Patient With Glaucoma Associated With Atopic Dermatitis.

Corneal and conjunctival inflammation associated with atopic dermatitis is classified as atopic keratoconjunctivitis, and eye rubbing related to ocular itching is known to cause various ocular complications. We report a case of a Japanese man in his 40s with open-angle glaucoma associated with atopic dermatitis who developed a characteristic corneal opacity after Ahmed Glaucoma Valve (AGV) implantation with ciliary sulcus tube insertion. Despite the absence of persistent anatomical tube-corneal touch on serial examinations, a stellate corneal opacity developed at a site precisely corresponding

An evaluation of alternative buffers for the transport and detection of Moraxella bovis and M. bovoculi on cotton wool swabs.

Bovine keratoconjunctivitis is a globally important inflammatory condition affecting the eyes of cattle. The reliable detection of Moraxella bovis and M. bovoculi on conjunctival specimens is crucial for observational studies aiming to unravel the complex epidemiology of this disease. The stability of Moraxella DNA was evaluated in three experiments using cotton wool swabs spiked with varying concentrations of sample suspensions and submitted either with or without DNA stabilizers. Swabs were subjected to different storage temperatures (4 °C or 25 °C), and DNA was extracted at 0, 24, 48, and 7

Ocular Allergy Within the Framework of the EAACI Nomenclature of Allergic Diseases and Hypersensitivity Reactions.

Ocular allergy encompasses a heterogeneous group of diseases with overlapping clinical features and complex immunopathological mechanisms. This often creates challenges in classification and, consequently, in optimizing patient management. The nomenclature published in 2023 by the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) addresses these issues by redefining these conditions and linking clinical phenotypes and environmental modifiers to underlying types of hypersensitivity. This framework enhances diagnostic precision and supports mechanism-guided management. This article app
