Tear Protein Alteration in Dogs with Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) in dogs is an immune-mediated disorder characterized by aqueous tear deficiency, ocular surface inflammation, and risk of vision loss. Although tear quantity is routinely evaluated using the Schirmer tear test (STT), the accompanying qualitative alterations in tear protein composition remain poorly understood. In this exploratory study, we identified and characterized qualitatively differentially expressed tear proteins in samples collected from seven Beagle dogs with KCS and five healthy Beagles. Samples were collected using filter paper, extracted in phosphat

Microsporidium Keratitis After Hurricane Francine: A Case Report.

Microsporidial ocular infections are being increasingly reported, especially in temperate climates. In this case report, we describe five patients who presented to a private ophthalmology practice in Southeastern Louisiana in 2024, all within 3 months of Hurricane Francine landing. The patients' ages ranged from 5 to 23 and included two female and three male patients. All patients except one had exposure to contaminated water, and microsporidia were detected via PCR in all patients. Microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis was diagnosed based on typical clinical features. The patients were all effe

A comprehensive analysis of dry eye disease clinical trials (2000-2024): research trends and gaps.

INTRODUCTION: Dry eye disease (DED), also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), imposes a substantial global burden, yet the clinical trial landscape guiding therapeutic development remains incompletely characterized. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study mapping interventional dry eye disease trials (2000-2024) indexed in Trialtrove. We analyzed 1,171 prospectively registered trials with dry eye disease as the primary indication, characterizing design, phase, geography, sponsorship, endpoints, and therapeutics. RESULTS: Trial activity rose steadily, peaking in 2023-2024, and wa

Muscarinic 3 receptor antibodies in Sjögren's disease: Evaluating assay variability and detection methods.

The most common manifestations characterizing Sjögren's disease (SjD) are extensive ocular and oral dryness due to decreased lacrimal (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) and salivary gland function (xerostomia). Another hallmark of SjD is the presence of autoantibodies. Acinar cells in the exocrine glands express muscarinic-type-3-receptors (M3R), which act as regulators of saliva secretion. Studies have linked M3R-targeting autoantibodies to reduced saliva secretion in SjD. Earlier studies have proposed that anti-M3R antibodies can pose as potential SjD clinical markers and indicators of dryness. Al

Investigating conjunctival immune pathways in Sjögren and non-Sjögren disease associated dry eye.

PURPOSE: Dry eye disease (DED) is classified based on its predominant etiology into aqueous tear-deficient (ATD), evaporative, or mixed. Sjӧgren disease keratoconjunctivitis sicca (SjD-KCS) is a very severe autoimmune form of ATD DED. The purpose of this work was to compare transcriptomic changes in the conjunctiva sampled from patients with ATD, SjD-KCS, and healthy controls (HC) to evaluate distinctions in the immune response on the ocular surface based on diagnosis. METHODS: Impression cytology of the temporal bulbar conjunctiva was collected using the EyePrim device. RNA was extracted and

Factors associated with graft astigmatism after corneal transplantation for keratoconus.

BACKGROUND: Graft astigmatism remains a major impediment to early visual rehabilitation and the long-term success of keratoplasty. Previous studies have identified graft size, donor–recipient size discrepancy, timing of suture removal, and surgical indication as factors associated with postoperative graft astigmatism. However, these studies often included heterogeneous corneal pathologies and evaluated the effects of only one or a limited number of variables. The present study aimed to investigate factors associated with corneal graft astigmatism following corneal transplantation in a large co

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings in a Case of Presumed Unilateral Trigeminal Ganglion Aplasia in a 3-Year-Old Female French Bulldog.

A young female French bulldog with a history of chronic right keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) because since birth was referred for an acute onset of nonambulatory tetraparesis. Right trigeminal nerve sensory deficits, including right corneal anesthesia and absent facial sensation, were identified during examination. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the neurocranium was performed, revealing severe hypoplasia to the absence of the right trigeminal ganglion, consistent with reports of congenital trigeminal hypoplasia/aplasia in human medicine. This represents a very rare but important differe

Changing Strategies in Keratoplasty After Corneal Hydrops: From Penetrating to Lamellar Approaches - A Narrative Review.

The hallmark of acute corneal hydrops (CH) is Descemet membrane (DM) rupture that leads to the influx of fluid into the cornea causing corneal edema. Multiple risk factors have been related to an increased incidence of CH in keratoconus (KC) patients, such as Down's syndrome, atopy, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, eye rubbing, and an earlier age of KC onset. Penetrating keratoplasty (PKP), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), compression sutures, cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive with bandage contact lens (BCL), intracameral gas injection, and amniotic membrane transplant (AMT) are some of the

A cohort study of factors associated with the incidence rate of keratoconjunctivitis in dairy heifers farmed under Mediterranean climatic conditions.

Bovine keratoconjunctivitis (BK) is a common ocular disease in cattle, often linked to symbiotic bacteria with pathogenic potential, such as Moraxella bovis. Although treatable, BK impacts productivity, animal welfare, and antimicrobial stewardship in food-producing systems. This study estimated the incidence rate of BK among dairy heifers and evaluated animal- and herd-level risk factors, including the field efficacy of a commercial M. bovis vaccine. A year-long prospective cohort study was conducted in 636 dairy heifers across nine farms in South Africa's Mediterranean climatic zone. Heifers
