A cohort study of factors associated with the incidence rate of keratoconjunctivitis in dairy heifers farmed under Mediterranean climatic conditions.

Bovine keratoconjunctivitis (BK) is a common ocular disease in cattle, often linked to symbiotic bacteria with pathogenic potential, such as Moraxella bovis. Although treatable, BK impacts productivity, animal welfare, and antimicrobial stewardship in food-producing systems. This study estimated the incidence rate of BK among dairy heifers and evaluated animal- and herd-level risk factors, including the field efficacy of a commercial M. bovis vaccine. A year-long prospective cohort study was conducted in 636 dairy heifers across nine farms in South Africa's Mediterranean climatic zone. Heifers

Rapid detection of fluoroquinolone-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis and its associated mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining region.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between amino acid mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining region (QRDR) of Staphylococcus epidermidis and its susceptibility to fluoroquinolones, as well as the potential of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping for rapid detection of resistant strains. Thirty-three S. epidermidis strains were analyzed (25 from preoperative patients, 8 from keratoconjunctivitis patients). Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of fluoroquinolones were determined using the broth microdilution method. The QRDR sequences of resis

Atopic keratoconjunctivitis: From molecular mechanisms to clinical implications.

Atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) is a chronic, bilateral inflammatory disease of the ocular surface that primarily affects young adults with a history of atopic dermatitis, asthma, or allergic rhinitis. AKC is considered the most severe form of ocular surface allergy and can result in serious complications that threaten vision, such as corneal ulceration, neovascularization, and scarring. Genetic predisposition, through regulatory genes that impact skin barrier function, immune system regulation, and allergic responses, plays a crucial role in the development and severity of AKC. Recent resea

Primary Sjögren's syndrome-associated immune thrombocytopenia: from pathogenesis to treatment.

Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by xerostomia and keratoconjunctivitis sicca, with approximately 10%-20% of patients developing concurrent immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Recent studies suggest the pathogenesis of primary Sjögren's syndrome - associated immune thrombocytopenia (pSS-ITP) may involve dysregulated TLR7 signaling, B-cell hyperactivation, and autoantibody-mediated platelet destruction. Beyond conventional therapies (e.g., glucocorticoids and intravenous immunoglobulin [IVIG]), emerging treatments have garnered increasing attention, including

Enigmatic Role of IL-31 in the Itch and Inflammation of Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis.

OBJECTIVES: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a recurrent allergic inflammation of the conjunctiva characterized by itchiness. The cytokine IL-31 is involved in itch and inflammation in other conditions, so we investigated whether it plays similar role in VKC. METHODS: We estimated messenger RNA (mRNA) IL-31 expression in giant papillae (GP) with real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). We used immunohistochemistry to examine IL-31 receptor (IL-31R) expression in neurons and epithelial cells in GP. We then performed fluorescence-activated cell sorting and immunofluorescence to examine

[Management of ocular adverse events associated with antibody-drug conjugates in the treatment of solid tumors: a consensus statement from Chinese experts (2025 edition)].

In recent years, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) have achieved remarkable progress in the treatment of solid tumors and are now widely applied in malignancies such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, urothelial carcinoma, and non-small cell lung cancer, demonstrating favorable clinical efficacy. However, with their expanding clinical use, safety challenges associated with ADCs have become increasingly apparent. Among these, ocular adverse events have received limited attention in the past but is now emerging as a clinically relevant concern, as it may impair patients' quality of

Pulmonary hemorrhage as a first manifestation of Sjögren's disease in a young male adult.

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder primarily affecting exocrine glands, characterized by dry mouth (xerostomia) and dry eyes (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). However, systemic manifestations, including pulmonary complications, are increasingly recognized. Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) is a rare but life-threatening presentation of SS, typically associated with vasculitis or coagulation abnormalities. We report the case of a 19-year-old male presenting with dyspnea and hemoptysis, later diagnosed with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). Initial clinical assessment revealed

Adverse events of trimetroprim-sulphonamide treatment of cats and dogs: a systematic review.

Potentiated sulphonamides (TMS) are recommended first-line antimicrobials in veterinary medicine, yet their use may be limited by concerns about adverse events (AEs). This systematic review aimed to evaluate the frequency, nature, and potential risk factors for TMS-associated AEs in dogs and cats. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) reporting standards, 110 studies published between 1943 and 2024 were included, covering > 4200 treated animals. A pairwise meta-analysis of eight comparative studies did not suggest a clinically relevant increased

Pediatric Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis (VKC): Current State and Future Directions-A Narrative Review of Clinical Features, Diagnostic Strategies, and Emerging Therapies.

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) represents far more than a typical allergic eye disease. It is a distinct and often underestimated chronic inflammatory condition that primarily affects children during critical stages of physical and emotional development. Though frequently grouped with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, VKC differs significantly in its immunopathology, clinical presentation, and long-term implications. Its intense ocular symptoms and its potential for corneal damage and substantial psychosocial burden require, rather than symptom control, coordinated and multidisciplinary man

Environmental and Climatic Drivers of Microsporidial Keratoconjunctivitis in Athletes: Molecular Evidence from Outbreaks in Japan.

Vittaforma corneae (V. corneae)-associated microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis (MKC) is increasingly recognized as an emerging infection affecting healthy individuals. However, the molecular links between environmental reservoirs and human diseases remain poorly understood. In this study, we examined the potential relationship between environmental factors and human MKC following 2 outbreaks in Nagasaki, Japan, involving 16 patients by integrating clinical, molecular, and environmental analyses. We collected ocular samples from affected patients and 16 soil and 11 water samples from related ge

Toxic Keratoconjunctivitis from Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) Exposure in a Contact Lens Wearer.

BACKGROUND: Toxic keratoconjunctivitis from plant exposure is a rare but potentially vision-threatening condition. Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) contains cardiac glycosides that disrupt corneal endothelial pump function, resulting in acute corneal edema and rapid vision loss. This entity is frequently misdiagnosed as benign conjunctivitis in the emergency setting. CASE REPORT: A healthy adult presented with sudden visual loss and corneal haze hours after gardening. She had been wearing contact lenses and reported handling milkweed plants. An initial evaluation at an outside emergency departme

Traditional Eye Medicine in Rural Somalia: Culturally Safe Harm Reduction to Prevent Corneal Blindness.

Traditional eye medicine (TEM) remains widely practiced across rural Somalia, where distance, poverty, limited eye care workforce, and low health literacy constrain access to timely biomedical services. Commonly reported practices include instillation of aloe vera liquid or gel, expressed human breast milk, honey, and plant derived sap or rubbed tree material to relieve redness, photophobia, and ocular pain. While these practices are culturally embedded and may be perceived as effective, the ocular surface is uniquely vulnerable to toxicity, microbial contamination, and delayed presentation, f

Ultraviolet association with vernal keratoconjunctivitis with perilimbal pigmentation.

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic bilateral ocular allergic disease affecting mainly children and adolescents. Perilimbal pigmentation (PLP) has been noted as a new sign of VKC in pigmented race of Asian and African origin. To analyze the etiology, clinical significance, and pathophysiology of PLP, and to explore the possible association between ultraviolet (UV) exposure and the presence of PLP in VKC. A PubMed search of articles between January 1983 and January 2024 on VKC with PLP was performed. PLP takes the appearance of spotty pigmentation in the interpalpebral conjunctiva. A

Sexual Dimorphism in Allergic and Mast Cell-Associated Diseases.

Allergic diseases are common, affecting more than one-third of the global population and varying widely in severity. A consistent theme in asthma, food allergy, atopic dermatitis, and chronic urticaria is a female-dominant prevalence in adulthood. Some of these begin with male predominance in childhood and shift with puberty. A smaller subset of allergic diseases, including eosinophilic esophagitis and vernal keratoconjunctivitis, has a clear male prevalence. In fact, nearly all allergic diseases exhibit sexual dimorphism in either prevalence or severity. These striking disparities are being u
