Keratitis patterns in patients with human immunodeficiency virus: A 10-year retrospective study.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease markers, types of keratitis, and sociodemographic factors. METHODS: This retrospective epidemiologic study examines HIV-positive patients diagnosed with keratitis over the past 10 years. A chart review was conducted to confirm diagnosis and extract key demographic data (sex, age at keratitis diagnosis, race, and zip codes) and disease metrics (type of keratitis, infectious organism, antimicrobials used, CD4 count, and antiretroviral therapy [ART] adherence). The distribution of keratitis types and infe

mTORC2-dependent autophagy inhibition regulates the replication of HSV-1 and adenovirus in viral keratitis & conjunctivitis.

Viral keratitis & conjunctivitis result in multiple ophthalmic symptoms and even progress to vision loss without timely intervention. Although multitudinous pathogens can cause ocular infections, the regulatory mechanisms underlying virus-host interactions remain incompletely defined. Our clinical and mechanistic investigations identify the co-infection of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and adenovirus as a predominant etiology of viral keratoconjunctivitis in Shenzhen, China (2024). The viral co-infection causes both severe symptoms and inflammations in clinical cases and in vitro. Mechan

Accuracy and completeness of large language models in Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis Queries: A Comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly applied in clinical contexts, yet their reliability in disease-specific ophthalmic domains remains insufficiently characterized. Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC), a highly contagious adenoviral ocular infection, represents a critical area where accurate diagnostic and therapeutic information is essential. This study aimed to assess and compare the accuracy and completeness of responses generated by two widely used LLMs, namely ChatGPT and Meta AI, to standardized ophthalmology questions related to EKC. METHODS: This cross-sectional

Long-term effects of adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis on conjunctival goblet cell density and tear film parameters: a prospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) is a common ocular infection that causes acute inflammation of the ocular surface. However, the long-term effects of AKC on conjunctival goblet cell density and tear film stability remain poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term impact of AKC on goblet cell morphology, density, and tear film parameters. METHODS: This prospective case-control study included 95 eyes of 64 patients with a history of AKC diagnosed during epidemic outbreaks based on strict clinical criteria (mean follow-up: 18.3 ± 6.8 months after the acute epis

Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis with viral triggers.

Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis (PKC) goes beyond limbal nodules. This pediatric ocular surface condition caused by delayed-type hypersensitivity to microbial antigens. The trigger is context-dependent: Mycobacterial antigens in tuberculosis-endemic areas; staphylococcal eyelid disease and rosacea in high-income areas. Although classically bacterial-driven, virus-associated presentations like herpes simplex virus (HSV)-linked phlyctenular disease, pediatric PKC during acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection, and molluscum contagiosum-driven keratoconjunctivitis suggest the same a

From Chlamydia to Gonococcus: Emerging Trends of Infectious Conjunctivitis and Keratoconjunctivitis in a Tertiary Ophthalmology Center in Switzerland from 2005-2025.

Gonococcal and chlamydial conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis are potentially sight-threatening ocular manifestations of sexually transmitted infections. Recent epidemiological data indicate rising rates of gonorrhoea and chlamydia infections worldwide, raising concerns about a possible increase in associated ocular infections. This retrospective single-center study analyzed the frequency and temporal trends of laboratory-confirmed gonococcal and chlamydial ocular infections in adults treated at the University Hospital Zurich between January 2005 and July 2025. Clinical characteristics, tr

Therapeutic Keratoplasty for Large Diameter Bilateral Corneal Melts Secondary to Gonococcal Keratoconjunctivitis: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a common communicable bacterial infection in the USA. Although primarily affecting the genitourinary tract, ocular involvement - gonococcal keratoconjunctivitis - is a rare but potentially devastating manifestation that can result in corneal melt, perforation, and permanent vision loss. The management of gonococcal keratoconjunctivitis is typically medical, but surgical intervention is warranted in severe cases. CASE PRESENTATION: This case details the delayed presentation of a 49-year-old male with gonococcal keratoconjunctivitis leading to bilateral 9

Concomitant circulation of lentiviruses and Mycoplasma spp. in dairy goats: a clinical and multi-sample diagnostic approach.

The health of dairy goat herds may be compromised by infections caused by small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV) and Mycoplasma agalactiae, particularly under coinfection conditions. This study investigated a dairy goat herd composed of 38 animals with a history of joint enlargement and reduced milk production in Northeastern Brazil. Clinical, serological, molecular, and phylogenetic analyses were performed using blood, milk, synovial fluid, and ocular swab samples. Clinically, arthritis was observed in 28.9% (11/38) of the animals, keratoconjunctivitis in 28.9% (11/38), and mastitis or agalactia

Asia's eye health challenge: unravelling the spread and solutions for conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Conjunctivitis remains one of the most common ocular conditions affecting paediatric and adult populations globally. South and Southeast Asia have experienced unprecedented seasonal surges in conjunctivitis cases, with tens of thousands of cases occurring over short periods, particularly during monsoon and pre-monsoon seasons. CLASSIFICATION & PATHOPHYSIOLOGY: Conjunctivitis is classified into infectious causes (viral, bacterial, and chlamydial) and non-infectious causes (allergic, toxic, cicatricial, and immune-mediated). Viral conjunctivitis accounts for the majority of cases. A

Adapting the Daily Inventory of Stressful Events for SMS Delivery: Recommendations for Research.

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic and potentially sight-threatening disease. Topical corticosteroids (Cs) seem to be the only effective treatment for this condition, although severe side effects may occur owing to their prolonged use. More recently, cyclosporine (Cyc) eye drops have been reported as a valid alternative, but so far such treatment has only been successfully experimented for a short time and in small numbers of patients. The aim of our study is to evaluate the long term safety and efficacy of topical cyclosporine eye drops in children suffering from VKC. Over a perio

These herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) serve several roles, including direct defense through toxic or repellent effects on herbivores and indirect defense by attracting the herbivores' natural enemies (Bleeker et al. 2009; Veyrat et al. 2016). HIPVs also act as warning signals, informing undamaged tissues within the same plant and nearby plants of a pending insect attack (Heil and Bueno 2007). HIPVs are mostly composed of

Mechanism of activation of an ancestral TEC kinase by PIP3.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) over the past 2 decades generated considerable optimism that better antipsychotic treatments for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were possible. SGAs offer several tolerability benefits over first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs), particularly with respect to extrapyramidal symptoms. However, SGAs can induce serious metabolic dysregulations, especially in drug-naive, first-episode, and child and adolescent populations, with olanzapine and clozapine having the highest propensity to cause these abnormalities. In this conte

INTRODUCTION: The EndoFLIP (for its acronym in English: endoluminal functional luminal probe) is a system that measures in real time the compliance index of the gastroesophageal junction and secondary esophageal peristalsis, based on the principle of impedance planimetry. Although this technology is relatively new and its diagnostic usefulness is still being evaluated, its use in clinical practice is increasingly recognized, fundamentally in those patients where there is no conclusive manometric diagnosis of esophageal motor pathology, mainly esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction and ac

An In Silico-Designed Chimeric Antigen Confers Broad Protection Against Major Diarrheal Pathogens (Shigella, ETEC, and EHEC) in Preclinical Models.

Diarrheagenic E. coli (DEC) and Shigella species are leading causes of under-5 mortality globally, prompting the development of a broad-spectrum vaccine. Here, we rationally designed a novel chimeric antigen ("SEISL") incorporating five virulence determinants: StxB and EspA (EHEC), LTB and a detoxified STa (ETEC), and the N-terminal domain of IpaD (Shigella). Bioinformatically optimized for maximal antigenicity, SEISL was expressed in E. coli BL21(DE3), purified from inclusion bodies under denaturing conditions, and confirmed by western blot. Immunization with SEISL + Freund's adjuvants in pat
