Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis (TB) Mimicking Meigs' Syndrome: A Case Report.

Meigs' syndrome is characterized by the triad of a benign ovarian tumor, ascites, and pleural effusion, with resolution of fluid collections following tumor removal. However, a range of other pelvic pathologies can mimic this presentation, sometimes referred to as pseudo-Meigs' syndrome. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) should be carefully considered as an important differential diagnosis in TB-endemic regions. We report the case of a 34-year-old woman who presented with progressive abdominal distension, epigastric discomfort, and shortness of breath. Clinical examination and imaging reveale

DNA as a quantum system in evolution.

Time may be viewed as an emergent consequence of increasing information entropy. I explore a toy quantum‑information model in which DNA is treated as an open quantum system. In this framework, weak, time‑dependent perturbations (potentially arising from thermal fluctuations, ionic microfields, metabolic noise, or electromagnetic signals) bias the micro‑timing of events during replication and repair. These slight timing shifts can influence the fate of transient electronic and protonic configurations (including short‑lived tautomeric states driven by proton‑transfer tunnelling), subtly altering

A potential benzimidazole-derived compound, NSC348884, combats carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacteria.

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) has been classified by WHO as a critical-priority pathogen that poses the most serious threat to public health and urgently requires the development of novel antimicrobial agents. Here, we identified a benzimidazole analogs NSC348884 with additive or synergistic therapeutic effects against carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacteria (CR-GNB) when combined with imipenem. Further investigation found that NSC348884 exhibited direct antibacterial efficacy without inducing resistance, and comparable anti-biofilm activity to polymyxin B (PMB) again

Determinants of early Elexacaftor-Tezacaftor-Ivacaftor use in adults with cystic fibrosis and preserved lung function: insights from a European multicenter survey.

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence exists to guide Elexacaftor-Tezacaftor-Ivacaftor (ETI) use in adults with cystic fibrosis (awCF) and preserved lung function (ppFEV1 >90%). To address the resulting variability in prescribing practices, we conducted a European survey among a group of adult CF centres aiming at identifying factors influencing ETI initiation decisions in adults with preserved lung function. METHODS: Between April and June 2024, we invited 25 ECFS prescribers from 25 adult CF centres to participate in a web-based survey to explore factors influencing ETI initiation in adults with CF

Ca²⁺ leakage is a conserved signal for non-canonical ATG8/LC3 lipidation and membrane repair.

Endomembrane damage of intracellular vesicles triggers signals that activate membrane repair in mammalian cells to restore homeostasis. However, the signals that drive diverse membrane repair recruitment at the individual organelle level are unknown. Here by recording Ca2+ leakage history with a newly developed Ca2+ probe in human macrophages, we discovered that Ca²⁺ leakage serves as a conserved signal that triggers ATG8/LC3 lipidation after different types of sterile membrane damage. The damaged compartments consisted of both single membrane and multilayered membrane structures undergoing ex

Silicosis and silica dust sampling in mineral mining across 30 countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Silicosis is an irreversible scarring lung disease caused by occupational respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust exposure. Mineral (noncoal) miners who extract metal, nonmetal, stone, and sand/gravel commodities are at risk for silicosis, but disease prevalence and exposures in these heterogeneous mining sectors are poorly understood. We assessed the global burden of silicosis and existing RCS dust sampling practices in mineral mining. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of studies published through March 2025 from five online databases, without geographic/language restrict

Risk factors and outcomes of culture-negative peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis: 10 years' insight from a large center in northern China.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis is the primary cause of technical failure and infection-related mortality in PD patients. Culture-negative peritonitis poses unique management challenges. The reported incidence of culture-negative peritonitis varies substantially across regions and centers, likely reflecting differences in patient characteristics, microbiological practices, and treatment protocols. In this study, we aimed to investigate the risk factors, treatment strategies, and clinical outcomes of culture-negative peritonitis in a large peritoneal dialysis center in no

The Wnt receptor Frizzled3 (FZD3) drives aggressive phenotypes in small cell lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine malignancy characterized by rapid progression and poor prognosis. This study integrates bioinformatics with experimental validation to characterize the role of Frizzled-3 (FZD3), a Wnt receptor, in SCLC progression. METHODS: We analyzed transcriptomic data from 102 SCLC and 55 normal lung tissues retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (datasets GSE6044, GSE40275, and GSE60052). Differential expression analysis was performed using the limma package, followed by GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses. To screen for r

Immunological and Hematological Characterisation of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (M. Tb) Infected Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Differentiating TB phenotypes remains a diagnostic challenge due to the absence of a universally accepted standard test. Although the interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) is recommended for Latent TB Infection (LTBI), its application varies across clinical settings. This study utilized IGRA to immunologically categorize subclinical individuals and compare hematological parameters, including the complete blood count (CBC) and differential leukocyte count (DLC) among subclinical, clinical, and cured individuals to assess their diagnostic utility. METHODS: IGRA was performed to di

Single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics in the discovery of kidney disease potential biomarkers: a narrative review.

The kidney maintains the structural and functional integrity of the human body through its sophisticated internal architecture. Specialized cell types are organized into distinct compartments, each serving specific functions. Recent advancements in sequencing technologies, such as single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and spatial transcriptomics (ST), have significantly enhanced our understanding of the cellular-level pathophysiological mechanisms underlying disease onset and progression, leading to the discovery of numerous biomarkers. This review summarizes the latest applications and advan

Isolated glycoprotein STK11 from the nutshell of Cocos nucifera L. modulated macrophage polarization to prevent the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacilli growth in J774A.1 macrophage.

This study examines the importance of host-directed therapy against tuberculosis by targeting macrophage polarization with Cocos nucifera L. nutshell-derived STK11. RT-PCR results revealed that M2 markers (Arg1, YM-1, FIZZ1, CD206, IL-4, IL-10) were upregulated, while M1 markers (CD40, CD68, IL-6, IL-12) were downregulated in H37Ra-infected J774A.1 macrophages. Isolated glycoprotein STK11 significantly (p < 0.05) restricted the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacilli in the Middlebrook 7H9 medium and inhibited H37Ra bacilli growth within macrophages. STK11 (10 μg/ml) was also found to dec

Single-cell dissection of pleural and systemic immunity uncovers pathogen-specific immune reprogramming in tuberculosis versus lung adenocarcinoma.

To dissect how malignant versus infectious pleural disease reshapes local and systemic immunity, we compared lung adenocarcinoma with tuberculosis using matched pleural effusions and peripheral blood from patients and healthy controls using single cell transcriptome analysis and TCR clonotype tracking. Th1/17 polarized pro-inflammation dominating TB effusions, while their precursors, the recently activated CD4 T cells, adopt an antitumor trajectory in LUAD, but their recruitment and clonal expansion were effectively suppressed. In both diseases, CD8⁺ T cells diverged into GZMH⁺ and GZMK⁺ subse
