Imaging of Urinary Bladder and Ureteral Endometriosis with Emphasis on Diagnosis and Technique.

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory gynecological condition affecting 10-15% of women in the reproductive age group. The urinary tract is the second most common extragenital organ system affected by endometriosis, and the urinary bladder and ureter are the two most common sites involved. Involvement of the urinary bladder can cause chronic debilitating symptoms, whereas ureteral involvement may lead to asymptomatic loss of renal function. Both conditions are frequently unsuspected, leading to a delay in diagnosis. Therefore, it is important to recognize this entity early, for which knowled

The urothelial gene regulatory network: understanding biology to improve bladder cancer management.

The urothelium is a stratified epithelium composed of basal cells, one or more layers of intermediate cells, and an upper layer of differentiated umbrella cells. Most bladder cancers (BLCA) are urothelial carcinomas. Loss of urothelial lineage fidelity results in altered differentiation, highlighted by the taxonomic classification into basal and luminal tumors. There is a need to better understand the urothelial transcriptional networks. To systematically identify transcription factors (TFs) relevant for urothelial identity, we defined highly expressed TFs in normal human bladder using RNA-Seq

Seminal papers in urology: maintenance Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) immunotherapy for recurrent Ta, T1 and carcinoma in situ transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder: a randomized southwest oncology group study (SWOG-8507).

The South West Oncology Group's 2000 randomised-control trial investigated the addition of maintenance intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) to non-muscle invasive urothelial carcinoma (NMIUC) treatment. The results were published when the efficacy of BCG immunotherapy maintenance was unclear.Randomisation produced two arms, each containing 192 patients assessed to be at high risk of recurrence following induction BCG therapy for NMIUC. The treatment arm went on to receive three successive weekly intravesical and percutaneous BCG administrations at three months, six months and then six m

Development and validation of a nomogram for predicting suicide risk and prognostic factors in bladder cancer patients following diagnosis: A population-based retrospective study.

This study sought to identify independent risk factors associated with suicide following a diagnosis of bladder cancer and to develop a predictive model with the potential to contribute to suicide rate reduction. Harnessing data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, we identified bladder cancer patients diagnosed between 2004 and 2015, randomly assigning them to training and validation cohorts. The Cox proportional hazard model was employed to identify relevant predictors, leading to the construction of prediction nomogram models. Validation of prognostic nomogr

Association between cigarette smoke exposure and urinary bladder cancer in Scottish terriers in a cohort study.

Canine urothelial carcinoma (UC) initially responds favorably to treatment, but is ultimately lethal in most cases. Research to identify modifiable risk factors to prevent the cancer is essential. The high breed-associated risk for UC, e.g. 20-fold higher in Scottish terriers, can facilitate this research. The objective was to identify environmental and host factors associated with UC in a cohort of Scottish terriers. Information was obtained through dog owner questionnaires for 120 Scottish terriers ≥ 6 years old participating in a bladder cancer screening study, with comparisons made between

Pan-cancer analysis of PLAU indicates its potential prognostic value and correlation with neutrophil infiltration in BLCA.

BACKGROUND: PLAU is known as a selected serine protease converting plasminogen to plasmin. The role of PLAU in the development of pan-cancer, especially bladder urothelial carcinoma (BLCA) remains unclear. METHOD: A variety of online tools and cancer databases, including TCGA, GETx, HPA database, GSCALite, UALCAN, ESTIMATE, CIBERSORT, ssGSEA algorithms and SangerBox website, were applied to investigate the associations between PLAU expression and prognosis, genetic alterations, pathway activation, and tumor immunity in pan-cancer. Through cBioPortal and STITCH platforms, the oncogenic role of

Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy Followed by Radical Cystectomy for Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer: Analysis of Efficacy and Safety in 119 Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Cisplatin-based systemic chemotherapy is recommended as neoadjuvant treatment for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) before radical cystectomy (RC). However, clinical challenges include the possibility of primary chemoresistance and limited feasibility in patients with renal impairment. This study investigated the efficacy and safety profiles of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NCRT) followed by RC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 119 patients with nonmetastatic MIBC, who were pathologically diagnosed with urothelial carcinoma and underwent NCRT before RC. Th

The classification of the bladder cancer based on Vision Transformers (ViT).

Bladder cancer is a prevalent malignancy with diverse subtypes, including invasive and non-invasive tissue. Accurate classification of these subtypes is crucial for personalized treatment and prognosis. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study on the classification of bladder cancer into into three classes, two of them are the malignant set as non invasive type and invasive type and one set is the normal bladder mucosa to be used as stander measurement for computer deep learning. We utilized a dataset containing histopathological images of bladder tissue samples, split into a training s

Cancer-associated fibroblasts-derived CXCL12 enhances immune escape of bladder cancer through inhibiting P62-mediated autophagic degradation of PDL1.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), the predominant stromal cell of tumor microenvironment (TME), play an important role in tumor progression and immunoregulation by remodeling extracellular matrix (ECM) and secreting cytokines. However, little is known about the details of the underlying mechanism in bladder cancer. METHODS: Bioinformatics analysis was performed to analyze the prognostic value of CAFs and CXCL12 using GEO, TCGA and SRA databases. The effects of CXCL12 on bladder cancer progression were investigated through in vitro and in vivo assays. The biological mechanism o

Characterization of a miRNA Signature with Enhanced Diagnostic and Prognostic Power for Patients with Bladder Carcinoma.

Bladder carcinoma is globally among the most prevalent cancers and is associated with a high mortality rate at advanced stages. Its detection relies on invasive diagnostic methods that are unpleasant for the patient. Non-invasive molecular biomarkers, such as miRNAs, could serve as alternatives for early detection and prognosis of this malignancy. We designed a computational approach that combines transcriptome profiling, survival analyses, and calculation of diagnostic power in order to isolate miRNA signatures with high diagnostic and prognostic utility. Our analysis of TCGA-BLCA data from 4

ERVK13-1/miR-873-5p/GNMT Axis Promotes Metastatic Potential in Human Bladder Cancer though Sarcosine Production.

N-methyl-glycine (sarcosine) is known to promote metastatic potential in some cancers; however, its effects on bladder cancer are unclear. T24 cells derived from invasive cancer highly expressed GNMT, and S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) treatment increased sarcosine production, promoting proliferation, invasion, anti-apoptotic survival, sphere formation, and drug resistance. In contrast, RT4 cells derived from non-invasive cancers expressed low GNMT, and SAM treatment did not produce sarcosine and did not promote malignant phenotypes. In T24 cells, the expression of miR-873-5p, which suppresses GN

Development and Validation of an IoT Neurostimulator for the Treatment of Neurogenic Bladder.

Neurogenic bladder is a dysfunction in the lower urinary tract due to damage to the nervous system. One of the treatments that has shown important results is transcutaneous neuromodulation. The neuromodulation equipment available on the market does not allow remote activation or offer many resources for adjusting the parameters of the generated stimulus, as most devices operate with pre-established parameters in closed packages. For this reason, customizing therapy for each individual can be difficult. Therefore, the objective was to develop and validate a neuromodulation device capable of bei

Diagnostic Immunocytostaining with Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-Gamma in Urine Cytology Samples.

INTRODUCTION: Urine cytology is a common method for detection of urothelial carcinoma (UC), however, is not high sensitivity. Improvement of the accuracy of cytodiagnosis using immunocytostaining as an auxiliary method is needed. This study aimed to determine the cytodiagnostic usefulness of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-γ) immunocytostaining in urine cytology for the detection of UCs, particularly low-grade urothelial carcinomas (LGUC). METHODS: PPAR-γ immunocytostaining was performed for 37 UC cases and 26 benign cases. Among the UC cases, 22 cases were of the papil
