Early Foley Catheter Removal after Segmental Colectomy With Colovesical Fistula Closure for Patients With Complicated Diverticulitis: A Single-Arm, Prospective Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety of early Foley catheter removal after segmental colectomy with colovesical fistula (CVF) closure in patients with diverticulitis. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: CVF secondary to diverticulitis are typically treated with segmental resection and CVF closure, followed by postoperative bladder decompression using a Foley catheter. Prolonged catheterization increases urinary tract infection risk, but the optimal duration of catheterization remains unclear. METHODS: This single-arm prospective trial (NCT05235204), conducted at a tertiary academic center from 6/2019-10/2

Small-Cell Carcinoma of the Bladder With Concurrent High-Grade Prostate Cancer: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Small-cell carcinoma of the bladder (SCCB) is a rare, aggressive neuroendocrine malignancy associated with early metastasis and poor survival. Due to its rarity, optimal management is not well defined and is generally extrapolated from small-cell lung cancer treatment paradigms. We report a rare case of SCCB with synchronous high-grade prostate adenocarcinoma managed with a bladder-preserving multimodal approach. An 82-year-old man presented with hematuria and urinary retention, who was diagnosed with limited-stage SCCB following transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT). He received ne

Postoperative Genitourinary Challenges in Children with Anorectal Malformations: A Prospective Cohort Study Highlighting the Role of Follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Anorectal malformations (ARMs) are congenital anomalies frequently associated with genitourinary abnormalities and other developmental defects. Surgical correction commonly involves colostomy, posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP), or laparoscopic/laparotomy-assisted approaches. This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of neurogenic bladder and vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in ARM patients and their associations with ARM type, fistula location, vertebral anomalies, and surgical technique. METHODS: This cohort study included 173 children with ARM in the pediatric surgery depar

Delayed Vesicocutaneous Fistula 18 Years After Tension-Free Vaginal Tape: A Rare Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Synthetic mid-urethral slings are widely used for female stress urinary incontinence and are generally safe. However, complications such as erosion, infection, bladder or urethral perforation, vascular or bowel injury, and postoperative voiding difficulties have been reported. Very rarely, vesicocutaneous fistulas may occur due to bladder erosion resulting from mesh-related reactions, which begin with chronic inflammation and weakening of the bladder wall, then extend to the perivesical tissues and the anterior abdominal wall, forming a fistulous tract to the skin. CASE PRESENTATI

Surgical treatment of giant colonic diverticulum with sigmoidovesical fistula, case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Diverticular disease is increasingly prevalent. Giant colonic diverticulum (GCD) is an extremely rare but potentially serious complication of diverticular disease. Although uncommon, prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent severe complications. Typical symptoms include abdominal pain and fever. Diagnosis is primarily achieved through computed tomography (CT). Surgical resection of the affected colonic segment with primary anastomosis represents the mainstay of treatment. This case report aims to describe a GCD complicated by a sigmoidovesical fistul

Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Transvesical Closure of a Vesicovaginal Fistula: First Report in a Teenage Girl.

Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) is rare in children and is most commonly associated with retained vaginal foreign bodies. Surgical repair is technically demanding and carries a significant risk of recurrence, which has limited the application of minimally invasive approaches. We report the first pediatric case of robot-assisted laparoscopic transvesical repair of a VVF. A 14-year-old girl presented with longstanding urinary incontinence, malodorous vaginal discharge, and recurrent urinary tract infections, since early childhood. Initial imaging revealed a 30-mm bladder stone. Cystoscopy identified

State of the Art: Single-Port Robot-Assisted Extraperitoneal Transvesical Surgery-Technique, Indications, Outcomes, and Pitfalls.

BACKGROUND: The transvesical route provides direct access to the bladder and prostate whereas avoiding peritoneal entry. With the advent of the da Vinci Single-Port (SP) platform, the extraperitoneal (EP) transvesical procedure has reemerged as a minimally invasive option for benign, oncologic, and reconstructive urologic procedures. However, guidance regarding setup, patient selection, outcomes, and technical challenges remains limited. OBJECTIVES: To provide a procedure-oriented overview of the SP robot-assisted EP transvesical procedure, focusing on access, indications, outcomes, and techn

Obstetric Fistula in Zambia: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Analysis of Associated Factors Using the 2018 DHS Data.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric fistula remains an understudied severe maternal health outcome in Zambia. This study examines the socioeconomic, reproductive, and healthcare access factors associated with obstetric fistula among women in Zambia. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 10 296 women using data from the 2018 Zambia Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS). The outcome variable was self-reported lifetime experience of continuous leakage of urine or stool from the vagina. Survey-weighted proportions were used to describe the prevalence and distribution of obstetric fistula. Associat

Uterine lithiasis triggered by an intrauterine contraceptive device: A case report and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Uterine lithiasis is an extremely rare condition. Although bladder stone formation associated with intrauterine devices (IUDs) has occasionally been described, no previous cases of uterine calculus have been reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 78-year-old Japanese woman who presented with abnormal uterine bleeding and abdominal distention. Imaging revealed calcifications extending from the cervix to the bladder, indicating a vesicouterine fistula. A uterine calculus containing a Y-shaped IUD and a bladder stone was identified. The patient underwent an a

Bladder stone as the first clue to a hidden vesicovaginal fistula: diagnostic and surgical insights from a multidisciplinary approach-a case report.

BACKGROUND: Women presenting with urinary tract symptoms such as bladder stones are often presumed to have primary urological disease. However, urogynecologic conditions-including vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) and retained vaginal foreign bodies-can rarely manifest with predominant urological symptoms, leading to diagnostic delay. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 20-year-old female presented with persistent lower urinary tract discomfort and urinary leakage for 2 years. She denied abdominal pain, distension, or menstrual irregularities. No psychiatric or surgical history was reported, and renal function was

York-Mason Repair of a Rectourethral Fistula in a Hostile Abdomen: A Case Report.

Rectourethral fistula is an uncommon but complex complication that may occur after prostate surgery and often requires individualized surgical management. The York-Mason transsphincteric approach represents an option for selected patients, particularly when previous abdominal procedures make conventional approaches challenging. This article describes the treatment of a rectourethral fistula using the York-Mason transsphincteric repair technique. The different surgical stages of this technique will be detailed, as an alternative to the management of rectus vesical fistula with hostile abdomen d

Intractable Diarrhea due to Enterovesical Fistula Caused by Recurrent Urinary Tract Infection with Bladder Outlet Obstruction: A Rare Clinical Presentation of "Urinary Diarrhea".

An enterovesical fistula (EVF) is an abnormal connection between the intestinal tract and urinary bladder, typically developing with symptoms of pneumaturia and fecaluria. We herein present the case of an 81-year-old man with 10-day watery diarrhea. After ineffective empiric antidiarrheal treatment, computed tomography and cystography revealed EVF and gas in the bladder lumen and within its wall. His diarrhea improved after urethral catheter placement. EVF can occasionally cause diarrhea in a delicate pressure balance between the bladder and intestine. Clinicians should be aware of this unusua

Vesicovaginal reflux: a case report and literature overview.

Vesicovaginal reflux (VVR) is a functional voiding disorder characterized by the retrograde flow of urine into the vagina during micturition, often presenting with daytime incontinence or postvoid dribbling. It is commonly underrecognized and may be mistaken for anatomical abnormalities such as vesicovaginal fistula or obstructive hydrocolpos, which require surgical intervention. We report a case of an 8-year-old girl who presented with dysuria, urinary urgency, and fever. Transabdominal and transrectal ultrasounds revealed an anechoic area measuring 7.3 × 3.3 × 4.0 cm in the vagina while urin

Vesicovaginal Fistula Repair Using Amniotic Membrane Interposition: A Case Report.

Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) is a debilitating condition associated with significant physical, psychological, and social morbidity. Surgical repair remains challenging because recurrence is often related to poor tissue quality and impaired wound healing. Human amniotic membrane (AM) possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, antimicrobial, and regenerative properties that may enhance tissue repair. We report the case of a 51-year-old woman who developed continuous urinary leakage following total hysterectomy for uterine fibroids. Clinical examination and cystoscopy revealed a 10-mm high vesico

Persistent cloaca without vaginal-common channel fistula: A Case series characterizing a rare phenotype.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent cloaca occurs in approximately 1 in 25,000 live births. Among patients with cloaca, the absence of a vaginal connection to the common channel represents a rare phenotype with distinct anatomic and management considerations. We describe the urologic, gynecologic, and surgical characteristics of this patient subset. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of a single-institution cohort of patients with persistent cloaca managed at a quaternary-care children's hospital between 2019 and 2025. Patients were eligible if they underwent primary cloacal repair by our mu
