Vitamin D and tear fluid cytokines in predicting outcomes in viral conjunctivitis - A new outlook.

PURPOSE: To determine the association between systemic vitamin D (VD) and immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels with severity and ocular surface inflammatory profile in patients with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC). METHODS: 210 eyes of 105 patients who were clinically diagnosed with EKC were included in the study. The levels of serum VD and serum IgE were measured. Schirmer's strip-based tear fluid (TF) was used to determine levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17A, TNFα, MMP9, sICAM1, and VEGF-A in a subset of patients. RESULTS: Levels of VD were significantly ( P < 0.05) lower and levels of IgE w

Swinepox virus: an unusual outbreak in free-range pig farms in Sicily (Italy).

BACKGROUND: Two outbreaks of swinepox were investigated in free-range domestic pig farms located in the northeastern side of Sicily, Italy. The disease is generally self-limiting with a low mortality rate, but morbidity can reach high rates in case of poor sanitary conditions, improper husbandry practices and ectoparasitic infestation. The presented cases are the first ever reported on the island and part of the few cases reported in domestic pigs. CASE PRESENTATION: Carcasses condemned at the slaughterhouse and deceased pigs from Farm A and Farm B respectively, were referred for post-mortem

Eyelid Molluscum Contagiosum Presenting as a Giant Nodule With Chronic Refractory Conjunctivitis.

Molluscum contagiosum is a benign cutaneous viral infection caused by a poxvirus, commonly seen in children and adolescents. It typically produces benign, self-limiting eruptions on the skin and mucous membranes, usually on the face, trunks, limbs, and genital areas. The eyelid is the most common site of ocular lesions, less commonly conjunctiva.Eyelid Lesions are typically small papules (two to six mm) with central depressions, or maybe non-umbilicated. Patients with immunodeficiency may have an atypical giant lesion or widely disseminated lesions. We present a case of eyelid molluscum contag

Canalicular obstructions after monkeypox infection.

We report two cases of lacrimal obstruction after ocular infection with monkeypox virus (MPX) in the 2022 outbreak. One of them was a distal canalicular obstruction and the other was a proximal canalicular obstruction. In the first days of MPX they presented with conjunctivitis and periocular skin vesicles. Several months after the ophthalmic condition was cured, they showed persistence of epiphora, and the lacrimal problem was diagnosed. The photographs taken during the inflammation of the anterior pole were reviewed and vesicles located in the same area as the canalicular damage were observe

Ocular Complications of Mpox: Evolving Understanding and Future Directions.

Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), has been endemic in regions of Central and Western Africa. In 2022, the global spread of the clade IIb MPXV led to a multinational outbreak, primarily affecting sexual transmission networks among men who have sex with men. Despite interventions, new cases have continued to emerge. In Africa, the spread of a novel strain of clade I MPXV, clade Ib, has prompted a Public Health Emergency of International Concern designation by the World Health Organization in August 2024. This article provides an updat

Ocular manifestations of mpox.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To highlight the clinical features of mpox with an emphasis on ocular manifestations and to review treatment options for this re-emerging infectious disease. RECENT FINDINGS: Ocular involvement of mpox varies by clade. The most recent 2022 outbreak appears to be associated with fewer conjunctivitis cases compared to previous outbreaks. However, the ocular findings occurring during this newly emerging clade can be visually threatening and include cases of keratitis, rapidly progressing scleritis, and necrotizing periorbital rashes. SUMMARY: Ocular mpox is an important clini

Mpox Virus and its ocular surface manifestations.

The Mpox virus (MPXV) is the causative agent of human Mpox disease - a debilitating rash illness similar to smallpox. Although Clade I MPXV has remained endemic to West and Central Africa, Clade II MPXV has been responsible for many outbreaks worldwide. The most recent outbreak in 2022 resulted from the rapid spread of a new clade of MPXV, classified into Clade IIb - a distinct lineage from the previously circulating viral strains. The rapid spread and increased severity of Mpox disease by the Clade IIb strain have raised the serious public health imperative of better understanding the host an

Changing age pattern and diverse outcomes of herpes zoster ophthalmicus: exploring the temporal trend, decrease in incident age and influence of treatment strategies.

PURPOSE: Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus (HZO) is a disease commonly affecting the elderly and immunocompromised. Over the last several years, a trend towards decreasing incident age, albeit with varying clinical features, has been observed. This temporal trend towards the younger age group necessitates a detailed evaluation to determine possible causes of its occurrence in this population. METHOD: This is a hospital-based retrospective study. 154 datasheets were initially identified. After excluding non-relevant data sheets (88), 56 relevant and complete records were subjected to comprehensive an

Viruses associated with measles-like illnesses in Uganda.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we investigated the causes of measles-like illnesses (MLI) in the Uganda national surveillance program in order to inform diagnostic assay selection and vaccination strategies. METHODS: We used metagenomic next-generation sequencing (M-NGS) on the Illumina platform to identify viruses associated with MLI (defined as fever and rash in the presence of either cough, coryza or conjunctivitis) in patient samples that had tested IgM negative for measles between 2010 and 2019. RESULTS: Viral genomes were identified in 87/271 (32%) of samples, of which 44/271 (16%) contain
