INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Studies on the imaging of female periurethral masses are sparse, and most are focused on cystic lesions. In this article, we studied female periurethral solid masses and reported their ultrasonographic features.
METHODS: Fifteen women with periurethral solid masses pathologically diagnosed between January 2008 and April 2021 were assessed.

RATIONALE: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) can occur in various parts of the body. Periurethral lesions are common in post-menopausal women. The differential diagnosis includes urethral caruncle, urethral prolapse, urethral diverticulum and the notorious urethral malignancy. Non-invasive squamous lesion of the urethra is rare with limited data on clinical significance. We present a case of urethral squamous papilloma in a premenopausal woman causing significant storage and voiding symptoms.

Urethral caruncle is a rare condition primarily affecting elderly. Sometimes, it resembles urethral prolapse or malignancies. It can even cause outflow obstruction or urinary retention. A 66-year-old female presented with a urethral caruncle. Histological features of incomplete intestinal metaplasia were reported. Only five previous cases of intestinal metaplasia in urethral caruncles have been reported. The mechanism of this tissue transformation remains unclear but theorised aetiologies include embryological and infective causes. Intestinal metaplasia carries a malignant potential in other organs, most notably the bladder. Therefore we recommend urethral caruncles be completely excised with prolonged follow up for atypical variants.

A 69-year-old Japanese woman with a post-hysterectomy status came to our primary care clinic. She presented with vaginal bleeding for the past 3 days which had developed after defecation. Urethral caruncle (UC) is a benign fleshy outgrowth at the urethral meatus. A urethral caruncle is the most common disease of the urethra in postmenopausal women. A definitive diagnosis can usually be reached based on physical examination. Cross-sectional imaging is performed when malignant urethral tumor is suspected, such as a urethral carcinoma. No articles have discussed the detailed imaging of urethral caruncles.
