Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio as a prognostic marker for survival outcomes in women with cervical cancer and HIV infection.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prognostic value of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in women with cervical cancer infected with HIV. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included women with cervical cancer with HIV infection who underwent primary treatment at a tertiary hospital in southern Thailand between 2005 and 2019. Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used to determine the independent factors associated with OS and PFS. RESULTS: Among 100 pat

Brain viral reservoir seeding and neurological metabolic dysregulation in early-life immunodeficiency virus infection.

While viral reservoirs establish rapidly in the peripheral and lymphoid tissues in HIV-exposed and infected infants, the timing and consequences of viral seeding in the developing brain remain unclear. Using a neonatal rhesus macaque SIV model, we tracked early brain-associated viral DNA/RNA, neuropathology, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) metabolism, and evaluated the impact of early antiretroviral therapy (ART). CSF viral RNA was detectable by 2 days post infection (dpi), mirroring plasma viral load kinetics. In contrast, brain tissue SIV DNA and RNA remained largely undetectable through the f

Association between infant feeding practices and infant growth by maternal HIV and antiretroviral therapy status: a prospective study in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Infants who are HIV-Exposed Uninfected (HEU) may experience adverse growth outcomes compared to those HIV-Unexposed Uninfected (HUU). However, there are limited data from the context of universal antiretroviral therapy (ART) and promotion of extended breastfeeding (BF) for infants HEU. We compared the growth of infants HEU and HUU enrolled January 2017-July 2018 from the same community in Cape Town, South Africa. METHODS: Data were collected during pregnancy and at seven days, 10 weeks, six and 12 months postpartum. Infant birth weight and length were converted to weight-for-age a

Invalid Nucleic Acid Test Results May Limit Deceased Donor Organ Utilization.

BACKGROUND: Nucleic acid testing (NAT) is essential for detecting transmissible viral infections in deceased organ donors and guiding safe organ allocation. However, invalid discriminatory NAT (dNAT) results may lead to unnecessary donor exclusion and reduced organ availability. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of HIV-1/2, HBV, and HCV NAT results from deceased organ donors in the United States. Donor specimens were tested at eleven laboratories using FDA-approved donor screening assays. Donor serologic results and organ utilization outcomes were reviewed to evaluate the clinica

Sexual desire and associated factors among older adults living with HIV: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: With the widespread availability of antiretroviral therapy (ART), HIV infection has become a manageable chronic condition, leading to a significant increase in the population of older adults living with HIV (OALHIV). Sexual health is a crucial yet often neglected dimension of comprehensive care for this group, as their sexual desire is rarely proactively assessed. Guided by the biopsychosocial model, this study aimed to identify factors associated with sexual desire among OALHIV. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at designated ART institutions in Luzhou, China, from M

Prevalence and socio-demographic factors associated with undernutrition among HIV-positive women of reproductive age in Mahama refugee camp, Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Despite the distribution of food rations, the existence of feeding programs, and the provision of free medical care, malnutrition and morbidity continue to pose a threat to women and children, who are the most nutritionally susceptible groups, especially during emergencies. When people consume less energy and nutrients than they require to maintain their health, it is called undernutrition. Undernutrition is still a major public health issue in many low- and middle-income countries, including Rwanda, despite significant advancements. Women and children are the most nutritionally su

Retention in care among women with HIV: A systematic review of treatment continuity during pregnancy and postpartum.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnant women with HIV are at risk of reduced engagement in HIV care during pregnancy and postpartum. Retention in care, defined as continuous engagement in HIV-related treatment and follow-up, is essential to achieve virological suppression and prevent vertical transmission. Contemporary evidence on retention in care during pregnancy and postpartum among women with HIV in high-income countries remains limited. Thus, the aim of this systematic review was to examine retention in care during pregnancy and postpartum in this population and context. METHODS: A systematic literature

Barriers and enablers to implementing health education for HIV virologic suppression among adult people living with HIV-HBV coinfection in Northwest Ethiopia: a consolidated framework for implementation research guided qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a major public health challenge, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where achieving sustained HIV virologic suppression continues to be difficult despite expanded access to antiretroviral therapy (ART). This challenge is further complicated among people living with HIV-HBV coinfection due to increased disease complexity, treatment burden, and adherence-related barriers. Health education plays an important role in improving adherence and virologic outcomes; however, its implementation remains inconsistent in resource-limited settings. This

ADAM17 blockade restores natural killer cell antibody-dependent cytotoxicity against human immunodeficiency virus-1.

Natural killer (NK) cells are critical innate effector cells against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) transmission and pathogenesis. Among the diverse NK cell functions, antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) is the most critical for HIV-1 control. Nevertheless, multiple reports have demonstrated dysfunctional NK cell activity in people living with HIV-1 (PLWH), including impaired ADCC. As a putative mechanism, CD16 signaling activation in PLWH is perturbed via ADAM17-mediated CD16 downregulation, and ADAM17 blockade can reverse CD16 downregulation in PLWH NK cells. However

Sex- and age- specific lung cancer incidence and mortality among Medicaid beneficiaries with and without HIV, 2001-2015.

BACKGROUND: People with HIV (PWH) have higher lung cancer incidence and poorer prognosis than people without HIV (PWoH). PWoH experience age and sex-based differences in lung cancer. However, evidence on sex- and age-specific trends among PWH are limited. METHODS: We evaluated lung cancer incidence for Medicaid beneficiaries aged 30-64 from 14 states (2001-2015) by HIV status. We used Cox models and inverse probability weighting to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) of lung cancer and the Aalen-Johansen estimator to calculate the cumulative incidence of lung cancer by HIV status. We estimated the

Bayesian inference of interval-censored data with an application to HIV population surveys: a simulation study comparing Hamiltonian Monte Carlo and Metropolis-Hastings sampling algorithms.

BACKGROUND: HIV incidence estimation in population-based surveys often relies on interval-censored seroconversion times and complex survey designs, requiring computationally efficient Bayesian methods. We compared the computational efficiency and inferential performance of Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) and Metropolis-Hastings (MH) for Bayesian analysis of interval-censored HIV seroconversion times using a weighted log-logistic accelerated failure-time model. METHODS: We conducted a simulation study of 5,400 datasets varying sample size, censoring, and weight dispersion under identical likelih

Exclusive breastfeeding and associated factors among HIV-infected mothers in sub-Saharan African countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, along with maternal antiretroviral treatment, to reduce the risk of HIV transmission to infants and promote their health and survival. However, globally, this practice is not as widespread as it should be, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, as shown by several studies among HIV-infected mothers. However, no comprehensive review has examined the overall prevalence and the factors influencing it. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the overall prevalence of exclusive br
