I Don't Really Know Much About PrEP: Examining Black HBCU Women's Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Knowledge and Awareness.

Despite HIV/AIDS disproportionately impacting Black women in the United States, HIV knowledge, awareness, and uptake of prevention efforts like pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) have been limited for this community. Since campus leaders can maintain the attention of Black college women for a sustained period, they are an ideal demographic for PrEP interventions. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to assess the awareness and knowledge of PrEP among Black Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) women, informing future possibilities and strategies for PrEP interventions and uptake

Developing a Female Sex Worker-Led Program to Improve the Uptake of Oral Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis in South Africa: An Intervention Mapping Study.

In 2016, the South African government approved free oral PrEP distribution among high-risk groups like female sex workers (FSWs) to reduce new HIV infections. Despite the availability, unique barriers exist that challenge PrEP persistence, including limited knowledge, side effects, stigma, and mobility that hinder adherence. As such, engaging FSWs in the design of an FSW-led intervention program is crucial to promote PrEP uptake, adherence, and retention. Processes of an intervention mapping approach were applied to design and develop the program in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. A needs analysi

Thyrotropin-Releasing Hormone Gene Methylation as a Potential Biomarker for Anal Intraepithelial Neoplasia.

Anal cancer is high in men who have sex with men living with human immunodeficiency virus (MSM-LWHIV). This cancer is strongly associated with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection. Anal cancer screening using cytology and high-resolution anoscopy (HRA) for diagnosis of anal intraepithelial neoplasia requires specialized expertise. Biomarkers for the diagnosis of abnormal anal cells are of interest. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) methylation at cg01009664 was detected using a pyrosequencing assay to compare methylation patterns among different anal lesions. Our results demonst

Beyond Viral Assembly: The Emerging Role of HIV-1 p17 in Vascular Inflammation and Endothelial Dysfunction.

p17, the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) matrix protein traditionally associated with viral assembly, has been recently investigated for its extracellular functions linked to vascular damage. This review examines the molecular and pathogenic signatures by which p17 and its variants (vp17s) contribute to endothelial activation, aberrant angiogenesis, and vascular inflammation, highlighting their relevance even under effective antiretroviral therapy (ART). Specifically, p17 exerts chemokine-like activities by binding to chemokine (C-X-C motif) receptor-1 and 2 (CXCR-1/2) on endotheli

Cortical White and Grey Matter Volume Differences Associated with Plasma Cytokine and Chemokine Levels in PLWH in Cape Town.

HIV infection is accompanied by production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are regarded as critical in neuronal damage, leading to brain dysfunction. To develop diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions, we need to measure CNS response to immune activation, hence the need to identify specific cytokine biomarkers that are associated with brain damage in HIV infection. This cross-sectional retrospective study applied Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for brain volumetric measurements and high-throughput Luminex-based immunoassays to quantify plasma cytokine and chemokine concentrations.

A scoping review of mobile health for ART adherence in pregnant and breastfeeding women with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa: preferences, acceptability, and privacy concerns.

BACKGROUND: Interventions involving Mobile Health (mHealth) have shown promise to improve retention in care and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among pregnant or breastfeeding women living with HIV (PBWLH). However, there are concerns surrounding the message preferences, acceptability, and confidentiality. This study aims to map and summarize the available evidence on the use of mHealth interventions in HIV care, especially ART adherence and retention in care, among PBWLH in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as their preferences, acceptability, and privacy concerns about these mHealth inte

Contextual and culturally adapted interventions to improve HIV outcomes: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Antiretroviral therapy is widely available, yet structural, social, and cultural barriers still limit human immunodeficiency virus prevention and care. Prevention tools such as consistent condom use and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) remain essential. Interventions that ignore local context and culture often have low uptake, especially among adolescents, Indigenous communities, and sexual minorities. OBJECTIVE: To map and synthesize contextually and culturally adapted interventions that aim to improve outcomes related to human immunodeficiency virus. METHOD: This scoping review

Testing different models of pharmacy-based HIV pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis initiation and management in Kenya: protocol for a cluster-randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In Kenya, as in many African countries, private pharmacies are ubiquitous, frequently accessed, and underutilized for the delivery of HIV prevention services. Whether enabling private pharmacies to initiate and manage clients on HIV pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP and PEP) leads to greater uptake and continuation than the current standard-pharmacy referral to clinic-based PrEP/PEP-is unknown. To address this gap and inform how private pharmacies might partner with the public sector, we are testing several models of pharmacy-delivered PrEP/PEP in comparison to the current s

HCV Genotype Distribution and Molecular Characteristics of HCV Core Domain I in Persons Living with HIV and HCV from Yunnan Province, China.

Yunnan Province, a critical southwestern Chinese border region and gateway to Southeast Asia, faces a complex human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/hepatitis C virus (HCV) co-infection epidemic. Molecular data on HCV Core domain I in persons living with HIV and HCV (PLWHH) remain scarce here. This study addresses this gap by analyzing prevalent HCV strains, identifying amino acid mutations, and predicting immune epitopes and structural motifs to inform clinical and vaccine strategies. The serum samples from 128 PLWHH, which were collected across 14 cities in Yunnan Province between January 2019 a

Microglial reactivity and nodule formation are associated with Synaptodendritic damage in the brains of people with HIV-1.

Despite the success of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) in suppressing systemic HIV replication, neurocognitive impairment (NCI) remains common among people with HIV (PWH). In the pre-ART era, severe forms such as HIV-associated dementia (HAD) were prevalent and characterized by distinct neuropathological features, including multinucleated giant cells, microglial nodules, and extensive neuronal loss. In the ART era, milder forms of NCI are more frequent; however, the underlying histopathology remains poorly understood. These milder impairments are primarily associated with synaptodendr

The role of subtyping methodologies in HIV surveillance and vaccine development: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: HIV genetic diversity has increased over time, with recombinant forms becoming more prevalent and complicating subtype classification and surveillance, particularly in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs). Accurate subtyping is critical for surveillance, vaccine design, and cure strategies, but its reliability depends on methodological choices - the genomic region sequenced, laboratory methods employed, and the subtyping tools used. This study evaluates how these methodologies influence reported recombinant form prevalence across regions. METHODS: This systematic review include

Point-of-care ultrasound guidance for long-acting cabotegravir-rilpivirine administration improves injection-site tolerability and preserves pharmacokinetics.

OBJECTIVE: Long-acting injectable cabotegravir + rilpivirine (CAB + RPV) streamlines HIV care but may be limited by injection-site reactions (ISRs) and pharmacokinetic (PK) variability. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) can visualize tissue planes in real time, yet its impact on drug exposure and tolerability remains unclear. DESIGN: This is a prospective crossover study in 51 virologically suppressed adults receiving bimonthly CAB + RPV who underwent one ventrogluteal injection guided by POCUS, followed by routine unguided ventrogluteal injections. METHODS: Trough and one month postinjection

The decay of HIV under anti-retroviral therapy is biphasic even in humanized mice with just T cells.

HIV-1 plasma viral load decays in a biphasic manner during antiretroviral therapy (ART). It was hypothesized that this is due to infection of different cell types, namely CD4+ T cells and macrophages. We studied this possibility directly by modeling the decay of HIV-1 in humanized mice. We utilized previously published data from humanized T-cell only mice (TOM) and myeloid-only mice (MOM) infected with HIV-1 and treated with a potent ART regimen. Viral load decay dynamics were modeled using either a single or a biexponential decay fitted using nonlinear mixed effects techniques. Fits were comp

Managing collateral stigmatization while accessing biomedical HIV prevention for queer people in Dar es Salaam.

This paper introduces the concept of collateral stigma to analyze how queer people in Dar es Salaam navigate HIV prevention through Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). Drawing on 11 months of ethnographic fieldwork (2021-2022), we show how PrEP use exposes individuals to unintended and misattributed stigmatization: being perceived as HIV-positive, queer, or a sex worker despite efforts to conceal these identities. Through case studies, we illustrate how stigma materializes in pills, spaces, and institutional practices, shaping strategies of concealment and avoidance. While PrEP aims to reduce HIV
