Cefmetazole (CMZ) was intravenously injected to 12 patients with acute prostatitis as well as 3 patients with acute epididymitis. Good clinical results were obtained in 10 patients (91.7%) with acute prostatitis and 2 patients (100%) with acute epididymitis. No side effects were reported in all of 23 patients. Thus, CMZ could be expected to reveal good response in the treatment of male genital infections.

Prostatitis and epididymitis, which are the most common complications of urethritis in men below 35 years of age, may be associated with Chlamydia trachomatis infection. Chlamydiae have been isolated from expressed prostatic fluid in men with urethritis complicated by prostatitis and from the epididymis in men with acute epididymitis. Thirty asymptomatic men with gonorrhoea were studied. No significant difference was seen in spermiogram (semen volume, sperm count, motility, velocity and normal morphology) and most of the seminal constituents studied (fructose, ascorbic acid, calcium, sodium, potassium, chlorides and magnesium) between this group of men and those of a normal control group. Citric acid levels were significantly lower in men with gonorrhoea (P less than 0.002). suggesting a non-acute prostatitis. No significant difference was observed in the studies before and after treatment.

Carbenicillin (CB-PC) was administered intravenously (5 gm over one-half hour) to 25 patients suffering form benign prostatic hyperplasia. Non-specific esterase staining has been found useful in the detection of macrophages in prostatic fluid (PF). In the early stage of acute prostatitis most of the leucocytes in a smear of PF took up the stain, suggesting the dominant participation of macrophages in the inflammatory area in this stage of the disease. Twenty cases with complicated urinary tract infections were treated with gentamicin. Good results were obtained in 7 of 14 cases with chronic pyelonephritis and 2 of 4 cases with chronic cystitis and in 1 of 2 cases with acute prostatitis. No side effect was observed throughout this treatment. But in laboratory examination, slight elevation of S-GOT and S-GPT was observed in 3 of 20 cases after gentamicin treatment.

Basic and clinical investigation on the intravenous administration of sulbenicillin in moderate dose (510g daily) was carried out to evaluate its clinical effect in systemic infections due to gram-negative bacilli.
