Development and psychometric properties of the HIV Public Stigma Scale (HPSS) among Chilean young adults.

Rising HIV incidence in Chile underscores the need for culturally appropriate measures of HIV stigma. However, few instruments are available to measure public HIV stigma (stigma held by the general population) on Latin American context. This study addressed this gap by developing and validating the HIV Public Stigma Scale (HPSS) for Chilean young adults. In a sample of 329 university students, exploratory structural equation modeling supported a three-factor structure underlying a single higher-order stigma factor. The final 14-item scale demonstrated excellent fit in confirmatory factor analy

Evaluating the impact of conditional micro-incentives on linkage to HIV care in rural South Africa: results from the Home-Based Intervention to Test and Start (HITS) trial.

Timely linkage from HIV diagnosis to care is critical for effective treatment and epidemic control. We evaluated the effectiveness of conditional micro-incentives on linkage to HIV care in the Home-Based Intervention to Test and Start (HITS) trial, a real-world implementation trial in rural South Africa. Of 45 communities in uMkhanyakude, KwaZulu-Natal, 16 were randomized to micro-incentive arms offering food vouchers (R50 [US$3]) conditional on completing home-based HIV counseling and testing (HBHCT) and linkage to care within 6 weeks, and 29 to non-incentive arms. All individuals were eligib

HIV-1 diagnosis during pre-exposure prophylaxis: A case report.

We report a case of HIV diagnosis in a 36-year-old man who has sex with men receiving daily oral PrEP (emtricitabine/tenofovir) in Argentina, where viral load or HIV PCR testing is not routinely available before or during prophylaxis. In 2022, PrEP was initiated after a diagnosis of primary syphilis, with a non-reactive fourth-generation HIV test performed 13 days earlier (outside the recommended window), so very early infection already present at initiation cannot be excluded. Self-reported adherence was >95%. Serology was negative at day 23 and became reactive at day 73, with an indeterminat

Tuberculosis Among Artisanal Miners in the Mulongo Health Zone, Democratic Republic of Congo: Unmatched Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge, with 10.6 million new cases and 1.3 million deaths reported in 2022. Artisanal miners in sub‑Saharan Africa are particularly vulnerable due to poverty, overcrowded living conditions, and high HIV prevalence. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), TB prevalence among miners is high, yet determinants remain insufficiently studied. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify sociodemographic, behavioral, and clinical factors associated with TB among artisanal miners in the Mulongo health zone, Haut‑Lomami Province, DRC. METH

Safer conception services for HIV-affected couples must address overlooked relationship dynamics: a commentary and call to action.

Data from East and Southern Africa shows the desire for children is strong among people living with HIV (PLHIV). Concurrently, many new HIV infections in East and Southern Africa occur in long-term sero-different relationships and may be due to the couples' attempts to become pregnant. Safer conception (SC) is a promising sexual and reproductive health service for PLHIV in Africa, yet it remains underutilised for high-priority at-risk populations, presenting a missed opportunity to prevent HIV transmission. Relationship-focused couples' interventions have improved sexual and reproductive healt

The association between social capital and mental health among older people living with HIV: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Older people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) constitute a vulnerable group in society and are at high risk of developing mental health problems. Although strengthening social capital is a common recommendation to reduce such mental health risks, no systematic review has examined the link between social capital and mental health among older people living with HIV. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed studies examining the association between social capital and mental health among adults aged ≥50 years living with HIV. Seven databases were search

The LEN4PrEP study: protocol for a phase 3B, non-randomised clinical trial integrating lenacapavir PrEP within multi-product HIV prevention services in primary care clinics in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the scale-up of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), HIV incidence remains high. The highly effective, twice-yearly subcutaneous injectable lenacapavir for PrEP (L4P) has provided a potential breakthrough for HIV prevention, but there is limited real-world data on uptake, patterns of use and service delivery requirements when offered in public health settings. The LEN4PrEP study will evaluate the integration of L4P within existing multi-product HIV prevention services in real-world settings in South Africa. METHODS: The study is a prospective, mixed-methods, phase 3B cli

Evaluation of the diagnostic validity of the HIV VISITECT CD4 point-of-care rapid diagnostic test in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: HIV remains highly prevalent in Uganda, where CD4 T-cell counts are central to identifying and managing Advanced HIV Disease (AHD). Instrument-based point-of-care (POC) CD4 platforms face cost and operational constraints in resource-limited settings. The VISITECT CD4 lateral flow immunoassay (LFA) offers a non-instrument-based alternative, but its diagnostic validity against the Pima Analyzer had not been evaluated in Uganda. OBJECTIVES: To compare diagnostic validity of the VISITECT CD4 LFA against the Pima Analyzer at the 200 cells/µL AHD threshold and explore factors influencin

An intravaginal ring for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis: assessment of safety and pharmacokinetics in a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: In Eastern and Southern Africa, 63% of new HIV infections occurred in women and girls, with adolescent girls and young women representing a particularly vulnerable subpopulation. Effective vaginal products for HIV prevention are desirable because they are underrepresented in the currently approved portfolio and have attributes motivating product use. In this trial, we evaluated an innovative intravaginal ring (pod-IVR) as a platform for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). OBJECTIVE: To measure the safety and multicompartment pharmacokinetics (PKs) of a pod-IVR delivering tenofo

Preservation of MHC-Ia protective allele suppression of SIVmac239 in aged rhesus macaques.

Major histocompatibility complex class Ia (MHC-Ia)-restricted CD8⁺ T cell responses play a central role in the host defense against HIV-1, with certain MHC-Ia alleles known to be associated with cytotoxic T lymphocyte responses having an increased potential for viral control. However, the impact of immune aging on the effectiveness of such protective alleles remains unclear. In this study, we assessed SIVmac239 replication in aged (17-23 yr old) rhesus macaques (RMs) exhibiting low frequencies of naïve T cells and expanded effector memory T cells, that were further stratified by the presence (

Effect of the BATHE Technique on Quality of Life in Adults with HIV/AIDS in Northern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Advancements in HIV/AIDS treatment have transformed the condition into a manageable chronic disease with improved life expectancy. However, increased survival does not always guarantee better quality of life (QoL). Psychosocial interventions, such as the BATHE technique, offer a structured approach to addressing emotional and social challenges in routine care. This study aims to evaluate the impact of the BATHE technique on the QoL of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH), an area with limited empirical evidence, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: This single-blinded random

Sex Disparities in Cardiovascular Risk Factors among People Living with HIV Attending a Clinic in North-western Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: HIV infection is linked with increased risk of cardiovascular disease through a complex interplay of factors involving traditional risk factors, antiretroviral drug use and effects related to the immunologic aftermath of HIV infection. Men and women have similar risk factors for cardiovascular disease, but many social behaviours impact health differently by sex. OBJECTIVES: This study set out to examine sex disparities in both traditional and behavioural cardiovascular risk factors among people living with HIV (PLWH) attending a clinic in Kano, North-western Nigeria. METHODOLOGY:
