La Peyronie's disease (induratio penis plastica) is a degenerative process involving the penis, whose cause is still not fully explained. Adequate treatment requires the correct staging of La Peyronie's disease. Diagnostic imaging plays a major role after case history and clinics. Induratio penis plastica (Peyronie's disease) is a chronic fibrotic process involving the penis. Proper treatment of the disease requires assessment of the degree of inflammation preceding or accompanying the fibrous Peyronie's plaques. The therapeutic decision in the management of Peyronie's disease depends on the confirmation or exclusion of inflammatory activity. Plain films of the penis in mammographic technique demonstrate the presence of fibrotic or calcified areas, in which conservative treatment is not more effective. Conservative therapy of Peyronie's disease has not given very encouraging results. This means operative treatment strategies are the only effective therapy form that appears to be successful. From 1982 to 1988 we have evaluated 283 patients affected by Peyronie's disease. 81 of these complained erectile disfunction. Semirigid penile prosthesis were inserted in 38 patients with severe induratio penis plastica. Following surgery the patients were given a sexual questionnaire in order to determine whether they had realised their expectations as well as partner acceptance. Our results appear to be favourable and prosthesis insertion in selected patients with Peronie's disease seems to be the safest, most economical and best accepted choice.

Results are analyzed of treatment of patients with induratio penis plastica by local application of orgotein. Fifteen patients with clinically manifest disease were the subject of this study; 4-8 mg Orgotein bulk was applied once a week in a total course of 8 to 10 injections. Criteria for the effect of treatment were: regression of the plaque consistency and size; decrease in the erectile deformity; change or disappearance of pain. The article reports on 18 sonographically examined patients with clinically verified Peyronie's disease (induratio penis plastica) who underwent a basic sonographical classification according to the system of Kelami. From 1970 to 1986 forty-nine patients suffering from Induratio penis plastica (IPP) were treated by irradiation. Peyronie disease, or Induratio Penis Plastica, is characterized by the presence of one or more fibrous plaques at the albuginea penis, on the cavernous bodies or on the intercavernous septum. First of all, Induratio Penis Plastica etiology is described, and its clinics and therapy. Past imaging methods are then considered (i.e. conventional radiology, xerography), and current ones (i.e. conventional radiology, cavernosography, CT and US). The authors report on their 4-year (1983-1987) experience with US in 62 males. Various different probes were employed, especially small-part 7.5 MHz probes.
