The cases presented in this article are representative of adolescent emergencies that may be encountered by the office practitioner. Many more examples in the area of adolescent gynecology could have been presented, including ectopic pregnancy and pelvic inflammatory disease. Substance abuse issues will be addressed in the second part of this topic, which will be published in the December 2005 issue of Pediatric Annals. Consultation with an adolescent medicine specialist is always recommended for challenging cases.

The present study was undertaken in order to investigate the influence of gentamicin on plasma testosterone levels of healthy and with Freund's adjuvant arthritis rats. Gentamicin (40 mg/day for 4 days) induced significant decrease of testosterone levels in comparison with the control group (P<0.025). Intraperitoneal calcium administration (30 mg/ kg bw) prevented gentamicin effect and maintained testosterone levels to that of the control. Malakoplakia is a rare inflammatory disease, related to Enterobacteria infection in the context of a disorder of cell-mediated immunity. This disease does not have any specific clinical or laboratory signs and the diagnosis is exclusively based on histology. Malakoplakia is exceptional in children and usually involves the gastrointestinal tract. The authors report a rare case of malakoplakia of the urinary bladder in a 4-year-old child, in whom the initial diagnosis was an anomaly of the urachus.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed 1-year prospective study in children with epididymitis. All patients underwent an immediate sonographic study of the scrotum.
