OBJECTIVE: Localized seminal vesicle amyloidosis is an unusual finding in surgical pathology material. Previous studies have demonstrated that the amyloid is directly produced by the seminal vesicle epithelial cells. We investigated the possible association of seminal vesicle amyloid in patients hormonally treated for prostate carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: The percutaneous treatment of pelvic abscesses has traditionally involved the placement of drainage catheters via a transgluteal, transrectal, or transvaginal route. These procedures are painful and prolonged. Recurrent haemospermia is often regarded as "essential". Following routine diagnostic procedures, we found an associated factor in 54 of 72 patients (75%). With one exception (prostatic carcinoma), the benign character of the disease was confirmed. The biologic effects of a new potential disease-modifying antirheumatic drug, romazarit (Ro 31-3948, 2-[[2-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-methyl-5-oxazolyl]methoxy]-2-methylpropio nic acid), have been investigated. In a 5-day adjuvant arthritis model, romazarit inhibited the development of hindpaw inflammation with a minimum effective dose of 30 mg kg-1. Plasma levels of the acute phase reactants seromucoid and haptoglobulin were also significantly reduced. Romazarit was equally effective in adrenalectomized animals, indicating that the compound is not acting via stimulation of the pituitary/adrenal axis.

Forty-six patients were investigated by ultrasonography in order to assess the state of the tissues directly adjacent to the prostate in patients with chronic prostatitis. Inflammatory infiltrations in paraprostatic fat, seen as irregularly shaped rarefication foci with a vague outline were detected in 16 (33.3%) and termed as paraprostatitis. Fifty men with cytologically confirmed chronic prostatitis were treated for 3 months by consecutive p.o. administration of doxycycline, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, and cephalexin. The subjective symptoms, palpatory findings, secretory capacity of the accessory genital glands (values of acid phosphatase and fructose in the seminal plasma) were evaluated.
