Computed tomography (CT) of bone was carried out in 20 patients with breast cancer, all of whom had abnormal radionuclide uptake on skeletal scintigrams but normal conventional radiographs. Twenty-eight sites were examined and 13 showed metastases in 11 patients. Five of these patients had no evidence of extra-skeletal recurrent disease. Follow-up at eight of these sites showed healing, sclerosis or progression, all of which correlated well with clinical findings. Regression in metastatic lesions as seen on a bone scan may be accompanied by increasing sclerosis radiographically. There are two possible causes for interval radiographic sclerosis: progressive osteoblastic tumor deposition or the healing process itself. The presence of active neoplasia can better be determined in sclerotic lesions by the bone scan which demonstrates the tumor-induced new bone formation, as compared to radiographs which show the more unpredictable results of new bone formation plus the reparative process. Five cases of a benign sclerosing lesion of breast are described. The lesion is characterized by a stellate, indurated zone of sclerosis and elastosis in a region of benign ductal proliferation. Carcinoma of the breast and prostate and Hodgkin's disease are the most prevalent underlying malignant processes. We describe a patient who had gastric carcinoma and early prominent diffuse sclerotic bone lesions and briefly review the literature.

During a period of 30 months 216 drill biopsies of palpable breast lesions were carried out. By using this method sufficient tissue material for a histological examination could be acquired in all cases. Out of 106 cases, in which the histological results could exactly be proved by following excision biopsy or mastectomy, 87% were correctly diagnosed by drill biopsy.
