The mechanisms underlying the role of Vitex agnus-castus in mastalgia.

Medicinal plants exert therapeutic effects or have beneficial healing functions on the human or animal body. Medicinal plants are widely used in traditional medicine as an interesting alternative and/or complementary to science-based medicine. Compared to chemical drugs, medicinal plants have a lower risk of side effects, are eco-friendly, and have cost-effective production. This encouraged researchers to extensively exploit them for their therapeutic use. One of the most well-known medicinal plants is Vitex agnus-castus L., which belongs to the Verbenaceae family. This shrub tree is mainly gr

Preventing nipple pain/trauma in breastfeeding women: a best practice implementation project at the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital (Spain).

OBJECTIVES: To assess compliance with recommendations to alleviate nipple pain and/or trauma (NPT) and to reduce the rate of breastfeeding abandonment for this reason. INTRODUCTION: As a fundamental priority, health programmes encourage mothers to breastfeed exclusively for the first 6 months of the baby's life and to supplement breast milk with other foods up to the age of 2 years. However, the presence of NPT can reduce or prevent compliance with this recommendation. METHODS: The project was designed and carried out using a framework based on the JBI Practical Application of Clinical Evide

Effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of cyclic mastalgia: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: About 68% of women aged 18-44 years have experienced cyclic mastalgia (CM), which occurs during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle when elevated hormone levels induce greater breast gland thickness. CM has a moderate-to-severe impact on a woman's quality of life. Prior research has suggested that acupuncture may be beneficial for breast pain relief. In this study, we investigate the effectiveness of manual acupuncture (MA) in the treatment of CM compared with that of sham acupuncture (SA). METHODS: This is a multicenter, randomized, controlled trial. A total of 108 eligible C

Post Treatment Mastalgia is a Common Complaint but not an Indication of Recurrence or Second Primary Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Post-treatment mastalgia is a common complaint in up to 68% of patients after treatment. This symptom is worrisome to patients as many believe it is a sign of recurrence. The current study was performed to evaluate if post-treatment mastalgia is associated with a second breast cancer diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients included were seen from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2020. All patients who were treated for breast cancer and then presented with breast pain during follow up were considered to have post-treatment mastalgia. All patients who were diagnosed with a second

Favourable prognosis in metastatic adrenal carcinoma: An unexpected outcome.

INTRODUCTION: Breastfeeding provides significant health benefits for families and cost-saving potential for health care systems. Physician support is crucial to lactation success. However, lactation education curricula across the US do not reliably meet published standards, and educators lack a standardized tool to assess student competency. We developed a breastfeeding-focused OSCE for UME learners that assesses students' application of lactation knowledge in clinical settings. METHODS: This lactation OSCE for medical students includes a patient interview, postencounter note, and evaluation

Intraoperative Nerve Conduction Studies During Open Carpal Tunnel Release: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Severe traction injury to the brachial plexus (BP) during childbirth can induce the formation of intraneural scar tissue or neuroma in continuity. This can lead to nerve entrapment and demyelination, which inhibit axonal transport to the target muscles. Secondary complications include muscle weakness, contractures, joint deformity, and altered limb growth with prolonged and persistent disability. These patients find difficulty performing activities of daily living. BP neurolysis is one of the multistage reconstructive procedures in patients with obstetric brachial plexus injury (OB

Effects of sagging breasts and other risk factors associated with mastalgia: a case-control study.

The aim of this study is to compare patients with and without mastalgia and to analyze the factors affecting mastalgia and its severity. The patient's age, height, weight, educational status, marital status, and occupation were recorded in all subjects. In addition, the women were asked about the presence of any risk factors for mastalgia, such as tea and coffee consumption, smoking, alcohol consumption, and weight gain. The sternal notch to nipple distance (SNND) was measured to determine whether there was breast sagging. Mastalgia was significantly more common in women with BMIs of > 30 kg/m

Effects of progestogens used in menopause hormone therapy on the normal breast and benign breast disease in postmenopausal women.

Hormone replacement therapy in menopause is used to improve climacteric syndrome in women whose quality of life is affected. However, given the wide variety of progestogens available, it is important to evaluate their differential benign changes (radiological, cellular, and clinical) on the breast. This review aimed to determine the different benign changes of progestogens used in postmenopausal combined hormone therapy on the breast (radiological, cellular, and clinical), in women without mammary pathology, in order to establish their safety profile. A systematic review of the literature was

The effect of the herbal medicine on severity of cyclic mastalgia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Cyclic mastalgia is one of the most prevalent problems in women of reproductive age and sometimes it is so severe that it influences their activities and requires treatment. The available drug treatments for mastalgia are not satisfactory and most patients have inclined towards complementary and alternative medicine including herbal medicines. Therefore, in order to evaluate the effectiveness and side effects of herbal medicines conducting systematic review studies and meta-analysis seems essential, thus this systematic review was conducted with the aim of determining the effect of herbal medi
