In order to find out whether perinatal cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection causes clinical symptoms or signs or influences the general morbidity of a child, a prospective study was performed on 147 children during their first year of life. 48 infants were infected with CMV perinatally. Reports of clinical infections during the second year were available from a total of 108 infants, and serum samples for viral antibody screening at the age 24 months from 111. This is a report of three patients who presented at the Mayo Clinic over a two-year period. All were initially diagnosed as having Bell's palsy but were later found to have a malignant neoplasm causing the paralysis. The intestinal lactase activity in six newborn jaundiced light-treated infants with diarrhea and in eight normal controls were compared by lactose tolerance test (LTT). Recent independent case-control studies have indicated that treatment with exogenous estrogen is associated with an increase in the risk of endometrial cancer. This question was studied in Olmsted County, Minnesota, by identifying all cases of endometrial cancer among residents over a 30 year period (1945 through 1974) and by matching four controls to each of the 145 patients. The infant feeding histories of 29 children with learning disorders were compared with those of 53 control children referred for other neurological conditions. 13-8% of children with learning disorders had been breast-fed, compared with 47-2% of the control children. Geographic variation in rates, effects of migration, consequences of exogenous hormone use, and other epidemiologic factors are reviewed. Twenty-four patients with far advanced malignant tumors, resistent to established chemotherapy,, were treated with the combination of MNU and Cyclophosphamide. The drugs were administered in six-day cycles sequentially. MNU in doses of 4 mg/kg body weight and Cyclophosphamide in doses of 8 mg/kg body weight were given. The paper refers to 167 patients who were treated with 2 mg Cyproteronacetate and 50 mug Ethinyloestradiol because of acne, seborrhoea, hirsutism and androgenetic alopecia. There is a definite place for estrogen replacement in symptomatic menopausal women. Requisites of such therapy are a through history to establish a real need, a complete gynecologic examination with a Pap smear before therapy begins and annually afterward, use of the smallest daily dose of estrogen that gives the desired effect, and periodic attempts to reduce the dosage or stop the hormone. Endometrial biopsy should be done regularly if this is feasible, and any uterine bleeding should be investigated.
