Temporal associations between pain intensity and disturbed body perception after total knee arthroplasty: a random-intercept cross-lagged panel model analysis.

Disturbed body perception is associated with chronic musculoskeletal pain, but its temporal relationship with pain after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is unclear. We examined whether within-person fluctuations in knee-specific body perception are prospectively associated with pain intensity after TKA, beyond stable between-person differences. A total of 285 people undergoing primary TKA completed the Fremantle Knee Awareness Questionnaire (FreKAQ) and 100-mm visual analogue scales for pain during movement and resting pain preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6 months, and 1 year postoperatively. Random

Maternal obesity and the intergenerational risk of cancer: Epidemiologic evidence and mechanistic insights.

Over recent decades, the prevalence of obesity has markedly surged. While excess maternal weight is a well-established risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes, growing evidence suggests that maternal obesity may also increase the long-term risk of cancer in offspring. This comprehensive review synthesizes epidemiological and experimental data linking maternal obesity to heightened cancer susceptibility in the next generation. Observational studies demonstrate increased risks of childhood leukemia and colorectal cancer in offspring of obese mothers, whereas preclinical models support associa

An integrated lifestyle intervention for mitigation of adverse effects associated with androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer (STAMINA): a multicentre, randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer causes substantial adverse effects. Despite consistent national and international guideline recommendations, supervised exercise is rarely integrated into care. We aimed to determine whether the STAMINA lifestyle intervention, embedded into cancer care, would improve cancer-specific quality of life and fatigue versus behaviourally Optimised Usual Care in men with prostate cancer in England. METHODS: STAMINA was a multicentre, randomised trial done across 15 UK National Health Service (NHS) trusts in England. Men on ADT for pro

Are breast screening recall rates associated with body mass index? Analysis of data from a population-based screening program.

BACKGROUND: Increased body mass index (BMI) is associated with increased risk of post-menopausal breast cancer, but little is known about its association with other key screening outcomes. This study investigates the association between BMI and the likelihood of being recalled after routine screening mammography. METHODS: To describe the associations between recall rates (crude and age-standardized) and BMI, descriptive statistics were estimated from screening events from clients attending the population-based BreastScreen Western Australia program. For those recalled, multivariable logistic

Quantifying the fatal and non-fatal burden of disease associated with child growth failure, 2000-2023: a systematic analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Child growth failure (CGF), which includes underweight, wasting, and stunting, is among the factors most strongly associated with mortality and morbidity in children younger than 5 years worldwide. Poor height and bodyweight gain arise from a variety of biological and sociodemographic factors and are associated with increased vulnerability to infectious diseases. We used data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023 to estimate CGF prevalence, the risk of infectious diseases associated with CGF, and the disease mortality, morbidity, and overal

24-week home-based walking program in the early adjuvant setting in breast cancer patients who receive aromatase inhibitor endocrine therapy: lessons learned from the SAKK 95/17 WISE prospective, randomized, multicenter trial.

BACKGROUND: Aromatase inhibitor (AI) induced arthralgia/myalgia (AIA) is a frequent side-effect of adjuvant breast cancer (BC) endocrine therapy. We investigated the effect of a user-friendly activity tracker to accompany a 24-week walking program, from the start of adjuvant AI-therapy, on patient AIA symptom burden and medication adherence. METHODS: 320 early-stage BC patients were included and randomly allocated to the intervention (arm A, n = 158) or control arm (arm B, n = 162). The intervention in arm A was aimed at briskly walking outdoors for 30 min continuously with 100 steps/minute f

Early life abuse and neglect in breast cancer survivors: Associations with physical and psychological health throughout diagnosis and survivorship.

Childhood abuse and neglect worsen physical and mental health through adulthood. This study examined how childhood adversity affected physical and psychological symptoms associated with breast cancer treatment and survivorship at three points within the cancer trajectory. Breast cancer survivors (N = 209) were recruited following diagnosis and completed three visits at pretreatment, 6 months posttreatment, and 18 months posttreatment. All survivors completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire to assess abuse and neglect exposure prior to 18 years of age. At each visit, participants completed s

Effect of Kangaroo Mother Care during the first 72 hours of life on early growth and breastfeeding in normal birthweight newborns: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) during the first hour of birth is recommended for healthy newborn infants and their mothers and improves early stabilisation and breastfeeding outcomes. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), involving prolonged SSC and exclusive breastfeeding, provides an optimal physiological transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life for preterm and low birthweight infants, improving survival by 32% and conferring multiple clinical and neurodevelopmental benefits. Extending the duration of SSC contact beyond the first hour may similarly provide underexplored benefits to

Metabolic Modulation in Cancer Care: The Potential Role of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have revolutionized the management of type 2 diabetes and obesity by providing sustained improvements in glycemic control, weight loss, and cardiovascular outcomes. These benefits have led to increasing interest in their potential role in cancer treatment. Obesity and metabolic dysfunction are well-known factors that promote the development, progression, and resistance to therapy in various cancers, suggesting that drugs targeting these pathways may have anticancer effects. Emerging epidemiologic and clinical evidence shows that GLP-1RA ther
