We reviewed records from 251 consecutive cesarean deliveries performed over a six-month period to evaluate the effect of amnioinfusion during labor on the incidence of postpartum endometritis in patients who delivered by cesarean section. One hundred fifty-four patients were excluded because they were not in labor, were at less than 35 weeks' gestation or received antibiotics during labor. Twenty-three of the remaining 97 patients received amnioinfusion during labor and represented the study group. This report describes the case of a 22-year-old female patient with noncharacteristic complaints in the lower abdomen. Sonography revealed a large cyst close to the right adnexa, suggestive of adnexitis; however, laparoscopy, performed because of suspected adnexitis, revealed a cystic tumor connected to the omentum instead.

Transvaginal sonography was used in the evaluation of clinically suspected pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). A total of 86 patients with PID were examined by transvaginal sonography within 1-3 days, 14 days and 90 days after hospitalization. The diagnosis of PID was confirmed in 37% of patients by laparoscopy, laparotomy or positive cervical culture of Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoea. Exicised tubal segments (including interstial and isthmic portions) from 33 women with proximal tubal occlusive infertility were examined pathologically. We found that pathologic entities included chronic tubal inflammation (70.59%), tubal endometriosis (9.80%), obliterative fibrosis (7.84%), salpingitis isthmica nodosa (5.88%), tubal tuberculosis (3.92%). Acute abdominal pain with fever over 39 degrees led to a diagnostic laparoscopy in a 25-year old woman. Diffuse petechial-like haemorrhages in the visceral peritoneum and superficial haemorrhages in the capsules of both ovaries were found together with an inflamed genitalia. From the pouch of Douglas secretion N. gonorrhoeae could be isolated. So far, this condition is not described in the literature. This probably rare case and its differential diagnosis are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether prophylactic doxycycline at suction curettage for incomplete abortion decreases the rate of postoperative pelvic infection.
METHODS: We randomized 240 patients to receive intravenous doxycycline or placebo at curettage. Cervical specimens for gonorrhea and chlamydia were obtained preoperatively. Two weeks post-procedure, we evaluated all patients for infectious morbidity and repeated gonorrhea and chlamydia cultures. Statistical analysis used Mann-Whitney U test, McNemar test, or Fisher exact test, as appropriate.

PURPOSE: The study's objective was to determine whether the high rates of gonorrhea in one inner city teen health care program were due to an increase in detection of asymptomatic cases and consequently a decrease in symptomatic gonococcal infections over a 4 1/2 year study period.

Pelvic infection is the commonest complication of legal abortion. The presence of lower genital tract infections increases the risk of complications, and women requesting abortion are at significant risk of harbouring sexually transmitted diseases (STD).
