BACKGROUND: The new rexinoid bexarotene is a retinoid X receptor antagonist and immune response modifier. Although combinations of oral bexarotene and psoralen plus UVA (PUVA) have been tried in patients with all stages of mycosis fungoides (MF), the dosage of bexarotene used in these combination regimens has been variable.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety of low-dose oral bexarotene and PUVA in patients with relapsed or treatment-refractory MF following monotherapy with multiple agents including PUVA, narrow-band UVB, interferon-alpha, oral bexarotene, and topical corticosteroids

Episiotomy is a perineal incision enlarging the vaginal opening during labor, preventing severe perineal/vaginal/ano-rectal lacerations. We performed a systematic literature review (PRISMA guidelines; Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science databases) of primary malignant tumors arising from the episiotomy site. Thirteen primary carcinomas were reported, mainly endometriosis-related histotypes (77%) (nine clear cell, CCC; one endometrioid, EC) with only two vulvar invasive squamous cell carcinomas and one adenoid cystic carcinoma of Bartholin's gland. No sarcomas, melanomas or malignant trophoblasti

The female urethra can be affected by numerous pathologic conditions, many of which are infrequent and often underdiagnosed, particularly before the introduction of MRI. Diagnosing urethral pathologic conditions is challenging due to ambiguous signs and symptoms, nonspecific physical examinations, atypical presentations (such as benign conditions mimicking malignant disorders), and large lesions. Various imaging techniques, including transperineal or transvaginal US and MRI, are essential for accurate anatomic and tissue characterization. Female urethral pathologic conditions can be categorize

INTRODUCTION: While vulvar masses are not prevalent in society, they are one of the reasons for complaints that arise during visits to gynecology outpatient clinics. An excision is typically necessary for both the purpose of diagnosing and treating the condition.
METHODS: We documented three exceptional instances with distinct histopathological diagnoses and varying presentations, as well as a consecutive series of five patients, including one Bartholin abscess and one labia major abscess.
RESULTS: During the compilation of this article, we intended to show that vulvar masses can manifest in

We report a rare case of an ano-Bartholin's gland fistula caused by an anal fistula in a patient without Crohn's disease (CD). A 34-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital due to purulent anal discharge and left vulvar pain. She had experienced several Bartholinitis in the past 2 years. She had no history of inflammatory bowel disease or other relevant conditions. A transanal ultrasound scan and pelvic magnetic resonance imaging showed a transsphincteric anal fistula connecting to an ano-Bartholin's gland abscess in the left vulva. Surgical findings showed that the primary opening of the a

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the Bartholin's gland (ACCBG) is a rare, slowly but aggressive malignancy. We reported the case of a 31-year-old woman who was treated by local excision and then hemi-vulvectomy, with positive margins and perineural invasion. Radiation therapy (RT) was then performed delivering 45Gy in 25 fractions in bilateral inguinal lymph nodes and 64.8Gy in 36 fractions on the vulvar area. After 30 months, there was no local relapse (LR) but the patient presented a histologically documented lung recurrence. Genomic profiling of the tumor showed a MYB-NFIB fusion transcript and

Three women with diverse gynaecological medical histories (one with endometriosis, one having had an episiotomy and obstetric anal sphincter injury during a recent delivery, and one having had a recent cystectomy of the left Bartholin gland) developed acute episodes of gynaecological pelvic pain. In each case, clinical investigations (including objective tools for assessing the source, nature and severity of the pain) were conducted early on, and a multimodal approach to therapy was introduced to control the pain and avoid central sensitization or chronicity. The multimodal approach included h

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Leiomyoma, known as a disease of the uterus, composed of spindle-shaped smooth muscle fibers and collagenous stroma, is rarely encountered in other sites especially in the vagina.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report, here, an exceptional case of a vaginal leiomyoma situated in the anterior vaginal wall suggesting in the first place a cystocele. The MRI objectified a rounded formation of the anterior wall of the vagina with regular contours highly suggestive of a vaginal leimyoma. The tumor was surgically removed by the vaginal route. The histopathologic examination confi

INTRODUCTION: Smooth muscle tumors of the vulva are more difficult to diagnose and are frequently mistaken as Bartholin cysts prior to surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old female presented with a left vulvar mass that increased in size compared to the previous year. The patient had normal urination and a regular menstrual cycle. The presentation was not associated with dyspareunia, abnormal bleeding, and signs of infection (e.g., fever, vaginal discharge). The history of any sexually transmitted disease was inconclusive. There was also no family history of malignancy. Physical examinatio

BACKGROUND: Bartholin's gland carcinoma (BGC) accounts for approximately 5% of all vulval malignancies-making it an extremely rare malignancy of the female genital tract. It commonly manifests as a painless unilateral mass, near the introitus. BGC more commonly occurs in post-menopausal women. Unfortunately, over half of cases are associated with a missed or delayed diagnosis as it is often mistaken for a Bartholin's gland cyst or abscess. These tumours have a predilection for local and perineural invasion. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice for suspected Bartho

Under 10% of gynaecological cancers are diagnosed in the vulva and vagina, mostly squamous cell carcinomas. Melanoma, Paget disease, basal cell carcinomas, and other cancers can present with vulval/vaginal symptoms. The pathology information system of a tertiary referral center for vulvo-vaginal cancers was searched for cancers of the vulva and vagina from 1996 to 2019. Squamous carcinomas were excluded, and the remaining entities were catalogued. A total of 221 nonsquamous cancers were found, including 135 vaginal and 86 vulval cases. One hundred eight cases of metastatic carcinomas from the

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the Bartholins gland, first described by Klob in 1864, is a rare form of vulvar cancer comprising approximately 2-7% of all invasive vulvar lesions (Cardosi, 2001). Treatment consists of excision followed by radiation therapy (Cardosi, 2001; Anaf, 1999; Barcellini, 2020). Progression is indolent with later recurrence and metastases in comparison to other forms of vulvar cancer (Yang, 2006). Resection remains the gold standard for treatment followed by radiation therapy if margins are positive (Cardosi, 2001; Yang, 2006; Chang et al., 2019). We present a case o

Lemierre syndrome has classically been described as septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular veins resulting from primary oropharyngeal disease caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum. However, many cases have been reported of the syndrome originating from other primary sites of infection, resulting in limited utility of the diagnostic criteria and increased difficulty in making the diagnosis. We describe a 22-year-old female who developed the syndrome through a Fusobacterium infection which originated from a Bartholin gland abscess, a phenomenon that has not yet been described in the liter

Background Aggressive angiomyxoma (AAM) is a rare mesenchymal tumor predominantly affecting the pelvis and perineum of females. Due to its variable clinical presentation, it is often misinterpreted and treated as other pathologies like Bartholin gland cyst, vulvar abscess, and hernia. The tumor is locally infiltrative, making its complete surgical removal difficult. Aim The aim of the study is to highlight and illustrate the imaging and pathological features of AAM. Materials and Methods After obtaining clearance from the Institutional Ethics Committee, a retrospective study was conducted o

BACKGROUND: Bartholin gland carcinomas (BGCs) are rare tumor types, for which no molecular analyses including genomic sequencing have been reported to date. Adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACCs) of the Bartholin's glands are an atypical histological type of BGC, and currently nothing is known regarding their genetic profiles or similarity to ACC carcinogenesis in other organs including the salivary glands, thereby limiting possible therapeutic options using precision medicine.
CASE PRESENTATION: We used targeted gene sequencing to analyze the occurrence of 160 cancer-related genes in two patients

The high contrast resolution provided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compared to all other modalities allows the interpreting radiologist to make a specific diagnosis for many common and uncommon findings. In some cases, the diagnosis can be so certain that there is no differential diagnosis. In this article, we review the most classically recognized findings when interpreting MRI of the pelvis including the following: Ovaries: Simple cyst, hemorrhagic cyst, corpus luteum, dermoid, fibroma/fibrothecoma. Uterus: C-section scar, adenomyosis, endometriosis, fibroid, congenital uterine anomal

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, also known as Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), is a self-limited histiocytic disorder of unclear etiology which most commonly presents with cervical lymphadenopathy. Purely extranodal presentation of RDD is uncommon, and isolated intralymphatic/intravascular confinement of this entity has not previously been described. We report a 16-yr-old female who presented with vaginal swelling and mass-like enlargement of the right labia. The mass had been present for nearly a year without pain or tenderness. Clinically, the lesion was thought to be a Barthol

Approximately half of adenocarcinomas that involve the vulva are secondary, either through direct extension or metastases from elsewhere. Primary vulvar adenocarcinomas are rare and encompass a diverse array of neoplasms that are nominally classified based on the presumed tissue or organ of origin, the tumoral phenotype, or both. In this review, we summarize the clinicopathologic features of adenocarcinomas that originate from the vulva and related structures, including the terminal urethra. Adenocarcinomas of this region encompass lesions that are defined by their primary site (such as adenoc

OBJECTIVES: To assess the methods used to manage Bartholin gland abscesses and cysts in French university hospitals.
METHOD: Data for this descriptive, cross-sectional study with self-reported data were collected between January and March 2018 by an online questionnaire. The 11 items of the questionnaire assessed the surgical techniques known and used, the type of hospitalization, and the non-surgical management to treat Bartholin gland abscesses and cysts.
RESULTS: Overall, 116 obstetrics-gynecology residents responded to the online questionnaire. The three best-known techniques were incisi

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma (PMHE) is a recently described vascular neoplasm which typically occurs in the lower extremities of young to middle-aged adults.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present here a unique case of PMHE arising primarily in the vulva of a 51-year-old woman who presented with a painful vulvar nodule. Clinically, it was thought as Bartholin gland cyst, vulvar hematoma or papilloma. On surgery, two nodules were found with one located in the superficial dermis and the other in the deep subcutis. Histologically, these two nodules showed similar features, composed of
