Nodular Hyperplasia of the Bartholin Gland, A Benign Mimicker of Aggressive Angiomyxoma: A Case Series and Literature Review.

Nodular hyperplasia (NH) of the Bartholin gland is an exceedingly rare benign solid lesion of the female genital tract that can mimic the Bartholin gland cyst clinically. The histologic criteria for NH were established in 1998 by Koenig and Tavassoli. In this case series, we describe 4 cases of NH from Women and Infants Hospital in Rhode Island. All cases have microscopic features of lobular proliferation of acini and inspissated mucin. One case especially has extensive mucin extravasation mimicking an aggressive angiomyxoma. In this case series, we call attention to NH as another entity to co

Difficulties of clinical and histopathological diagnosis in advanced vulvar clear cell carcinoma.

Clear cell carcinoma (CCC) of the female genital tract usually arises in the ovary, endometrium, cervix and vagina. A rare site for CCC is the vulva, and moreover even rarer are the cases involving the Bartholin gland. A 54-year-old female was admitted for a 1.5×2 cm tumor at the level of the right Bartholin gland. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam revealed enlarged inguinal, pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes but no other primary tumor. Microscopic examination revealed CCC. The tumor was positive for cytokeratin 7 (CK7), paired-box 8 (Pax8), napsin A and vimentin, negative for estroge

Sexual function after Bartholin gland abscess treatment: A randomized trial of the marsupialization and excision methods.

OBJECTIVE: To compare sexual function scores in patients who had marsupialization and gland excision procedures for the treatment of Bartholin gland abscesses. STUDY DESIGN: Patients who had bartholin abscess for the first time were randomized into marsupialization or gland excision methods. The primary outcome was to compare post surgical Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) scores between the marsupialization group and the excision group. Secondary outcomes were to calculate the recurrence rates and other postoperative complications after the surgery. RESULTS: 195 women were evaluated for t

Potential delay in the diagnosis of vulvar cancer and associated risk factors in women treated in German gynecological practices.

The goal of this study was to estimate a potential delay in the diagnosis of vulvar cancer and identify associated risk factors in women treated in gynecological practices in Germany. The current study sample included 1,652 women from 218 gynecological practices who received an initial diagnosis of vulvar cancer (ICD 10: C51) between January 2000 and December 2015 (index date). After applying several exclusion criteria, 505 non-cancer controls were matched (1:1) to 505 vulvar cancer cases based on age, health insurance status, and index date. The primary outcome was the delay in vulvar cancer

Recurrent Huge Left Bartholin's Gland Abscess for One Year in a Teenager.

Bartholin's gland abscess is the commonest worldwide reported abscess in gynaecological outpatient clinics; it has also been reported that Bartholin's gland abscess is three times more common in occurrences compared to Bartholin's gland cyst. It is more common in women who are at risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections; however, other causes of infection should be investigated to exclude other causes of disease. We present the case of an 18-year-old female patient, a teenager of the reproductive age group, with the recurrent development of huge Bartholin's gland abscess in a period o

Are the patients with anatomic variation of the sublingual/Wharton's duct system predisposed to ranula formation?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate ranula development according to anatomic variation of the ductal system of sublingual gland (SLG), especially the presence of Bartholin's duct. METHODS: The anatomic variation of SLG duct was prospectively investigated and compared between 55 consecutive patients with ranulas treated by SLG excision (group 1) and another 15 consecutive patients undergoing similar surgeries for other conditions (group 2). The ductal structures of SLGs and submandibular glands (SMG) were also compared between the pediatric patients and adult patients with ranulas. RESULTS: In 32 of 55 pa

Aggressive Angiomyxoma of the Pelvis and Perineum: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Aggressive angiomyxoma (AA) is a rare mesenchymal tumor that usually occurs in the pelvis and perineum of young females. AA can simulate Bartholin's gland cyst, abscess, lipoma, simple labial cyst, or other pelvic soft tissue tumors. Cross-sectional imaging, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), plays an essential role in the diagnosis and management of AA. We report a case of AA in a 38-year-old woman with typical MRI features. We also present the findings of a literature review on the radiological features of this disease.

Lipoblastoma-like tumor of the vulva: further characterization in 8 new cases.

Lipoblastoma-like tumor of the vulva (LLTV) is an exceptionally rare adipocytic mesenchymal tumor with only 4 cases reported previously. The aim of this study is to help characterize this tumor type. Eight cases of LLTV were identified in the consult files of one of the authors (C.D.M.F.). Clinical data and follow-up information were obtained from the referring pathologists. Detailed clinical information is available in all 8 cases. Patient age ranged from 17 to 46 years (median 27 y). Lesions presented as a vulvar mass with a variable growth rate, sometimes being painful. The most common preo

Clinical Manifestations and Therapeutic Management of Vulvar Cellulitis and Abscess: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Necrotizing Fasciitis, Bartholin Abscess, Crohn Disease of the Vulva, Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Infections of the vulva can present a complex differential to the gynecologist, ranging from superficial skin infections to life-threatening necrotizing fasciitis. Recognition and timely treatment remain universal to skin and soft-tissue infections as the subcutaneous anatomy of the vulva can facilitate rapid spread to other tissues with significant morbidity and mortality. Ineffective antibiotics or deferring necessary surgical debridement have proven to be costly to the patient, and the gynecologist must maintain an appropriately high index of suspicion. Employing a multidisciplinary team ap

Carcinomas and sarcomas of Bartholin gland. A report of nine cases and review of the literature.

UNLABELLED: The greater vestibular gland, also called Bartholin's gland after the Danish anatomist Caspar Bartholin the Younger who first described it in the 17th century, is the site of tumours arising from different types of epithelium and characterized by a different clinical course. In the years 1980-2009, 1,296 patients with vulvar carcinoma were treated at the Oncology Centre in Warsaw, Poland and nine of them had carcinoma of Bartholin's gland, including three patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), three patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and three patients with sarcoma.

Myxoid leiomyosarcoma of the Bartholin gland.

BACKGROUND: Myxoid leiomyosarcomas originating from the Bartholin gland are exceedingly rare. Only one other case of a Bartholin gland myxoid leiomyosarcoma has been reported. CASE: Our patient presented with a 10 cm mass on her vulva, which was presumed to be a Bartholin gland cyst. Pathology showed a high-grade myxoid leiomyosarcoma with positive margins. She was treated with left radical hemivulvectomy, laparoscopic hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and six cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy. She is now 1 year from completion of therapy and remains disease-free. CONCLUSION:

Recurrent sublingual ranula or saliva leakage from the submandibular gland? Anatomical consideration of the ductal system of the sublingual gland.

PURPOSE: Some believe that the recurrence of sublingual ranula results from incomplete removal of the sublingual gland (SLG), but recurrence remains in some patients who undergo repeated excision of the remnant SLG, and the final solution to the recurrence is to remove the ipsilateral submandibular gland (SMG). In the authors' experience, preoperative aspirate from a sublingual ranula was a thick mucus-like fluid resembling egg white, whereas that from recurrent cyst after removal of the SLG was thin serous fluid. Based on the difference of the aspirated fluids, the authors speculated that the

Gonorrhea infection in women: prevalence, effects, screening, and management.

Gonorrhea is a set of clinical conditions resulting from infection with the sexually-acquired bacterial pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Acquisition may involve multiple mucosal sites in the lower female genital tract, including the urethra, cervix, Bartholin's and Skene's glands, as well as the anorectal canal, pharynx, and conjunctivae. It may spread to the upper genital tract, uterine tubes, abdominal cavity, and other systemic sites. Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported sexually-transmitted infection in the US and rates are higher among women than men. Women and infants are affect

Bartholin's, vulval and perineal abscesses.

Perineal infections are a common presenting complaint in women attending acutely to a gynaecology department. Specifically, Bartholin's abscesses can occur in approximately 2% of women. Conservative versus surgical approaches to manage these infections aims to reduce the need for hospital admission. We summarise the literature on the diagnosis and management of Bartholin's and other types of perineal infections and abscesses specific to gynaecology.

Intravascular T-cell lymphoma of the vulva, CD30 positive: a case report.

Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma involving the vulva is very rare. It affects predominantly the labia major but it can also present as a clitoral mass or can even be located in the Bartholin's gland. Vulvar lymphoma is an aggressive disease. We describe a case of a 48-year-old woman who presented to our hospital with fever and a slow growing mass in the vulva. She had no other clinical symptoms. CT-scan showed no evidence of disease in any other organ or lymph node tissue. A local excision of the mass followed and the final diagnosis was primary intravascular vulvar lymphoma, of T-cell origin, C

A review of the management of diseases of the Bartholin's gland.

Bartholin's abscess and cyst account for 2% of all gynaecological visits per annum. This article reviews the anatomy, epidemiology and pathophysiology of the Bartholin's gland. The management of Bartholin's abscess including antibiotic use in the early stage of the condition together with options for surgical intervention are discussed and in so doing the variation of clinical practice in other countries is considered. The use of the word catheter, carbon dioxide laser are compared with traditional surgical techniques of incision and drainage and marsupialisation. The outcomes of treatment par

Vulvar endometriosis in surgical scar after excision of the Bartholin gland: report of a case.

Endometriosis is a common gynecologic disease characterized by growth of endometrial glands and stroma outside the endometrium. Implants are most commonly found in the pelvis but can occur in many other sites. Vulvar involvement of endometriosis is extremely rare. A case of vulvar endometriosis is presented. Endometriosis was infiltrating the subcutaneous scar tissue of left labia minora after cystectomy of Bartholin gland for abscess that has recurred several times despite office-based treatment.

[Postoperative complications of Bartholin's duct abscess. About two cases].

Bartholinitis is the most common infectious vulvar disease and develops in approximately 2% of all women. The choice concerning treatment may be uneasy between medical or surgical modalities, and we have to be cautious because of the risk of severe complications associated with the procedure. We report two cases: one case of sepsis and the other one of bacterial cellulitis after Bartholin's duct abscess marsupialization. In the light of epidemiological and bacteriological date referring to Bartholinitis, we recommend a safe and effective management (particularly the use of broad-spectrum antib
